A Prager Question for You...
If you only had a choice between the two, which would you rather your son or daughter do: regularly smoke but always tell the truth, or consistently lie but never smoke? (You have to pick one or the other... neither is not an option.) Please tell us why you chose to answer the way you did.

Consistently lie but never smoke.
anna says:
I would prefer he lie rather than smoke - then he can lie to me when he says he is still smoking, which would mean he has quit. I am dreaming of course, he says he is quitting every day.
heather vecchiarelli says:
I would rather my child regularly lie and not smoke. Lying is a venial sin, while smoking can be seen as a mortal sin. (Thou shall not kill)_.. Smoking kills because smoking ruins your lungs...ruining your lungs sets you up for lung cancer....lung cancer causes death....and since you know the risks of smoking you therefor are committing suicide.
Wanda Dobrogowski says:
First. NO one, I think, never lies. We might like to think so, but I remain unconvinced.
If I did have a child, once they reached an age where they might have the beginnings of a consience, in large part by the example of parents and significant others like teachers, Aunts and Uncles and Grandparents, I should think the following. Since I do NOT believe a person always tells the truth (or consistently lies,) I would rather have a smoker for a child, (not) but on to be a smoker as an old enough young adult to chose such a thing. Hopefully they might grow to belive smoking is not good for us.
An aside, a dear friend of mine lost her young adult bubbly daughter who was also a smoker to lung cancer. She wept aloud at the funeral service. I will never forget it.
You ask good questions, open for invited debate, but that ends at what we can only presume to be as close to the truth as we can ascertain to be the truth, our highest aim.

Regularly smoke but always tell the truth.
WhitU4ever says:
So sorry to hear that, Anna. We all end up dying eventually. And so my point of view is that the condition of the soul while we live (ie: character)... the courage to tell the truth... is more important than whether or not we inhale highly polluted air. Our bodies will eventually be unable to hold us any longer and then we will face our maker. What will we have to say for ourselves. Well, I lied all the time, but I never inhaled a cigarette, God! Aren't you proud of me?
WhitU4ever says:
Jesus said every secret thing will eventually be revealed. Even if we try to lie, we can't hide the truth.
Grayson Pulis says:
The Bible teaches that our body is a temple. It also teaches us to tell the truth. I was forced to decide which teaching took precedence over the other and this is what I concluded.
MarkUpshaw says:
never smoke. The truth is relative and should be avoided when it can only damage the individual and the relationship.
Spook says:
This is an easy one to answer. The problems with today's world is that most people have lost perspective of what really counts. This about sums it up for me.
says:
Truth is more important than my 'value' of not smoking, in my humble opinion. It is his/her body and his health versus the impact of his/her consistent lying on the lives of friends and family
Terry says:
Well, the best thing would be to smoke and tell the truth. It didn't say what he could smoke, so he could choose from a variety of things
Movenon says:
The truth shall set you free. So if you lie how can the truth set you free? Yes we all know that smoking is not good for us however I do not think it will stop us getting to Heaven. MM
Montanabeliever says:
I would rather my children smoke than be consistent liars. Once a person becomes born again, we have this new nature given to us by the Holy Spirit. Lying becomes something we detest and try not to do anymore. Smoking harms the body, this is certain, but it does not affect one's salvation. Revelation 21:8 reads: "But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and ALL LIARS, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death."
If a person is a habitual liar, their very soul is on the line. Be a smoker and save your soul, be a liar and go to hell. In my mind, the case is settled. I would much prefer my children to do neither, but since that isn't an option on this poll, let them smoke and yet tell me the truth.
Maine-iac01 says:
I would rather my child tell the truth. This says more about who you are as a person than wether or not you smoke. Personal resposibility has more to do with how we live up to our obligations than how we treat our bodies.
Personally I would rather know that I can trust an individual than worry about their smoking habits. Who wants to be around someone who can't ever seem to tell the truth? Don't we have enough of those types in DC and the media?
