Design Psychology: How to Make your Design Stand Out

Why some logo wears red color, while other is colored in olive green, and yet another has a cool blue color? Confused? Let me re-frame the question. Why does one brand or category uses one color theme while another goes for different color theme?

A good designer keeps these things in mind when designing a logo, brochure, pamphlet, leaflet, website, or any other material. We call it understanding the design psychology of people.

Graphic Design and UsabilityI want to discuss usability first because I believe no design is good, no matter how creative it is, if it is not functional. You should pay utmost care to the usage scenario of a stationary, website, logo, etc., that you are designing while cracking a design concept.

No one buys a design. One buys a solution to the problem at hand.

Mood, tone, personality, and image

The right graphicsAre you fun-loving or serious corporate type? Do you want people to be serious when interacting with you, or do you want them to come near you and crack a joke?

The mood your design will create and the personality it will adorn is another important design consideration. The tone of your design (fun, serious, etc.) will depend upon the design's mood and personality. These three things along with color, which I am discussing below, form the image of the stuff you have designed and the brand it will represent.

For Whom

Choosing a right conceptAre you for elderly or for hep teenagers? Is the modal viewer a young office-going person or a young college-going student? You should decide the target audience of the thing you are designing before actually designing it. A design that works for a 20 something will not work for 40 something.

Chosing right Colors

Which color to use is another most important consideration during the design process? The choice of color is governed by the mood, personality, and tone you want to create for the design you are working on. The target audience for whom you are creating design also plays a great role in deciding on the color selection.
