Thank you for your ideas Elizabeth Jean. I've found we benefit greatly when we look at communication as a way to learn more about others and make genuine connections. Listening is a wonderful way to get closer to people and learn more about them. It also helps us make decisions based on richer information.

I totally agree with what you say about, "Our ability to Communicate Effectively with the people around us has a profound impact on our lives. It sets the tone in interpersonal relationships." This is especially true of the business leaders whom I coach. I developed The Communication Cycle as a tool to help everyone who has any communications issue.

By a strange coincidence, just before I came across your lens a few minutes ago, I had just told off E-Bay customer services for non-effective communication - the error message showing on their Turbo lister was completely incomprehensible and led to me wasting ages on the internet trying unsuccessfully to find out what was meant.

Too many "specialists" have their own technical way of saying things, and completely forget that they are not speaking to people who have the same technical ability or knowledge as themselves. When I was a solicitor, I sometimes had to act as an "interpreter" between barrister and client, because even though they both spoke English, the barrister was not prepared to use simple non-technical language which was understood by the client. It felt so silly sitting next to both of them and having to be the middleman passing on information which the barrister ought to have been communicating direct to the client.

It really struck a chord when you said you are not comfortable making small talk - I feel the same way, and am perfectly able to put over my point if I have something to say, but I just don't enjoy small talk. I enjoyed your lens

How true this is. For as long as i can remember , i said , there is those who hear and those who listen. Majority of people don't listen in which it is our number one enemy as humans.

I work a lot with volunteers and find that Effective Communication Skills are something that we all need to work on. Great lens and welcome to the SC group.

Yup, seems like many of us have forgotten how to listen to one another. It takes genuine interest to really hear what a person is saying (and communicating in other ways, as you point out in your fine lens). 5*s and a blessing. :)

Lizzy -- another great lens. Learning how to listen is certainly a big key to being an effective communicator.
