The "Diabesity Epidemic"

Diabesity-A New Word-But What is it?
For the program I teach in my classes go here.
OK --But what is it Exactly?
Diabetes, obesity, insulin resistance, and metabolic syndrome are really all the same problem, but to different degrees, and it is now been termed-Diabesity.
It is the condition of metabolic imbalance and disease that ranges all the way from mild blood sugar imbalance to full-blown type 2 diabetes. Once a person starts down that road, they generally continue on it, until they make a change or they die.
Whether you've got a little extra weight around the middle or have been diagnosed with insulin resistance or even type 2 diabetes, the fundamental underlying biological causes of ALL of these conditions are the same.
Unfortunately, Diabesity is becoming a global epidemic!
It leads to ill health and premature death. And it is not a fun journey.
Consider the data from Europe alone: In Europe we are told approximately 33 million adults will be suffering from diabetes by 2010, (this year) and obesity, which is a major recognized risk factor for type-2 diabetes, is itself rapidly increasing in prevalence resulting in a DIABESITY epidemic. The current cost of type-2 diabetes in the European Union is 15 billion Euros per year, and medical complications arising from diabetes account for up to 8% of total health costs in Europe.
From Medscape we read: At least one third of Americans have been unsuccessful at maintaining their weights within healthy ranges.[1] Obesity is a major risk factor for type 2 diabetes, and it is estimated that more than 20 million Americans are currently diabetic, one third of whom do not realize they have the disease.[2] Because obesity and diabetes often go hand in hand, a new term has been coined to describe America's current healthcare crisis: "the diabesity epidemic.[3]"
What is the Connection between Obesity and Type 2 Diabetes
Carrying excess fat around the abdomen leads to increased fat in the liver, causing insulin resistance.
That is why medical authorities now believe that a person's Body Mass Index (BMI) can help predict whether or not a person will develop type 2 diabetes.
Action needs to be taken-and quickly.
Just what is a person to do?
You have a choice. Learn which foods has created this horrible health issue. Learn which carbs spike your blood sugar, and which ones will not. Diet is everything when it comes to Diabesity.
Please read on, as you can turn this around.. The Large arrows below will take you to the ultimate solution, the Program to turn your diabesity around for good!
This program works, as myself and those in my classes can attest to.

Where did the word Diabesity come from?
Word Spy tells us-- Diabesity came from UCLA:
The word Diabesity came from UCLA: When UCLA's Center for Human Nutrition started a "diabesity Research Program" involving research on the use of innovative approaches to weight loss which may be useful for treating the patient with obesity and diabetes.
-"UCLA Center for Human Nutrition Starts Diabetes & Obesity Research Program," PR Newswire, February 25, 1998
We next hear the term from Shape Up America (which trademarked the word- Diabesity) it says: For every individual diagnosed with juvenile or type 1 diabetes there are nearly 20 people with type 2 diabetes in the United States. The majority (Not 100%-more like around 90%) of persons with type 2 diabetes are overweight or obese, with a poor diet and inactive lifestyle - although not always by choice. In 2000, Shape Up said there were many sponsored national conferences on this topic.
Diabesity® shows the connection between obesity and the development of type 2 diabetes. Shape Up America! is working to raise awareness of the growing prevalence of pediatric type 2 diabetes (which was virtually nonexistent 30 years ago) and to drive home awareness among the public, health care professionals, leaders and policymakers that pediatric obesity is driving this newly emerging epidemic in the pediatric population. The extent to which communities and neighborhoods can be designed (or re-designed) to support physical activity and healthy eating in all age groups and thereby prevent obesity and type 2 diabetes is a major interest of the non-profit Shape Up organization.
Actually, it is a term that encompasses the following health issues:
1. Insulin resistance
2. Pre-diabetes
3. Metabolic syndrome
4. Obesity
5. Syndrome X
6. Adult onset diabetes
7. Type 2 diabetes
All of these are essentially the same thing just with varying degrees of severity. And the underlying cause as well as the treatment is virtually the same as well. It is proper Diet and Lifestyle.

Dr. Hyman: you can turn your life around
The Diabesity Epidemic Part 1: How Diabetes and Obesity are Ravaging America Today
Dr. Mark Hyman says you CAN reverse it,
Listen to one man's experience of reversing Diabesity.
Diabesity leads to Chronic Disease
In addition, diabesity leads to virtually every chronic disease prevalent in the 21st century( according to Dr. Mark Hyman): heart disease, stroke, dementia, cancer, high blood pressure, and kidney failure to name a few of our self-made horrendous health issues.
As with virtually all of our medical/health treatments in this country in particular the approach to this diabesity epidemic is to treat the symptoms not the cause. And generally speaking this is by means of the standard medical care using drugs or prescriptions-which is failing miserably.
For example this is a reactive instead of proactive approach.
Such as:
Lower blood sugar (diabetes drugs and insulin)
Lower high blood pressure (anti-hypertensive drugs)
Lower cholesterol (statins)
Thin the blood (aspirin)
Instead, we should be asking the question ; what is the true root cause of these diseases? And quite simply these diseases are really the result of our nutritional choices, our lack of activity/exercise and exposure to toxins in our daily lives. In other words, they are highly preventable with proper lifestyle choices.

What do we need to know about Diabesity?
Also How do we Prevent or Reverse Diabesity
What is known about Diabesity?
Doctor Francine Kaufman wrote the book "Diabesity". It is a best seller, so you might check it out.
Dr. Hyman, I have learned is teaching what I consider to be a very good and effective program-(it is fairly expensive, by some standards, costing over a couple thousand dollars and you must go to his clinic), and I think it takes 6 weeks to take. Of course, when it comes to your health, this would be much less expensive than the cost of being sick. From what I have read about it, and him, I assume it is a very good program..
Or you could take my class, as we teach very similar. .Dr. Hyman says that proper foods for your type is more powerful than drugs or medications--which I agree with.
I am a Certified Diet Wellness Coach, the program that I teach gets us off the Diabesity journey, but, it is from the perspective of nutrition and lifestyle. It was designed first for blood sugar problems. To get it go here.
Actually, that is where we need to be proactive, and adjust our lives.

You may ask: What do I do to learn more about this subject?
You do research, there is information available. Of course, you won't hear as much about getting to the root cause as you will read and hear about drugs and medicine as it is not as commercial. Big Pharma cannot make millions on your lifestyle, so it isn't publicized like drugs and medicines are. But, this information on getting you to the real cause, and adjusting your lifestyle is priceless!
Also, implementing this program is not as dangerous as drugs and medicines. Properly prescribed medications are one of the leading causes of premature death. I am not saying you don't need them in some cases-but, they are entirely over prescribed and over used.
Do the research. You can learn what to do. Take classes - like mine and others that focus on whole foods and an active lifestyle.
You see, there are things you can do.and It doesn't cost a lot of money like taking medicines. Use the information to change your diet, nutrition. and add activity. You can do it!!
Remember: you, and those you love , including your children, are worth the time and effort to learn and then apply this priceless information.

Diabesity: A Doctor and Her Patients on the Front Lines of the Obesity-Diabetes Epidemic (Paperback)
Francine R. Kaufman MD 4 1/2 Stars
Excellent information--My doctor recommended this book. It is excellent. Very well written and very informative. Everyone who has been diagnosed with Type II Diabetes or if you have child that runs the risk of developing diabetes needs to read this book.
Another one:
Dr. Kaufman has opened my eyes and given lots of hope to people who thought there was no way out of this horrendous cycle which eventually led to amputation and multiple declines until an early death culminated the misery. She certainly has a heart toward her fellowman to bring to light in such a way that the layman can understand the intricate workings of our bodies and how to properly take care of our health. Three cheers for her and her family and all the compassion they have shown!!! This book should be mandatory reading for all humans.
The Diabesity Epidemic Part 2: Why Conventional Medicine Actually Makes Things Worse
That is a myth.
Listen to information on the Accord Study released in 2008.
Please pay attention to the cause of Diabesity and what we must do to overcome it.
The Accord Study-Stopped because the Intensive Program was not working
Is More Always Better? - the ACCORD Study Results
No. Conventional Treatments for Diabetes does not work!
Intensive Treatments with Medications.
This was stopped as the lowered blood sugar level led to more deaths.
We need to treat the cause-which is Insulin Resistance. We don't need to take an avelange of more drugs.
Instead, we do need to change our nutrition-our lifestyle and increase activity.

Best Book and Easy to understand--Everyone is talking about how we should eat more fruits and vegetables, because it is better for our health. The UltraMetabolism Cookbook: 200 Delicious Recipes that Will Turn on Your Fat-Burning DNA (Hardcover)
Do you need a great cookbook to improve you and your families health?
I have to say that this is the best cookbook as far as using whole foods and grains. I started on this eating program 3 weeks ago and have already lost 11 lbs. It can get time consuming cooking all your food from scratch but I have to say that I feel like I am eating like a queen. Fast food joints and quick food can not compare to the receipes in this book. It's like eating at a gourmet restaurant all the time. I feel so much better, less pain from fibromyalgia and much more energy. Truly amazing.

- Hi Carmel,
Very interesting, informative and educational lens. Don't believe I'd heard the term "diabesity." My husband was diagnosed with type II diabetes 3-4 years ago, although he's not particularly overweight, maybe a few pounds, but not by much. I'm going to send him this lens via email, so he can read it tonight. Some very good diet pointers, even for those without diabetes OR obesity. Thanks for posting this info! I'm giving it 5*'s

- My brother-in-law, who was quite overweight, developed type 2 diabetes. He changed his eating habits and began an exercise program, lost 30 lbs. and now is feeling much improved, has more energy, and feels good about himself again. He's on medication, not insulin, for his diabetes, but is hoping to be able to completely stop the meds within the next few months. He's very pleased getting his weight under control has made such a positive change in his life. Interesting to learn the word 'diabesity' and what it all means.

- Thanks for your comments.
So many are on this Diabesity journey, and only by changing the diet and being
more active can we turn things around. I am so happy your brother-in-Law is taking
charge of his life by changing his lifestyle. That just might save not only his own self, but
his family too.
That's the purpose of lenses like this, because gaining the knowledge and then applying
it into our lives can save lives.
It is Priceless!

- I don't, thank goodness, and I intend to keep my weight down and eat well in order to avoid this problem. What makes me the saddest - and the maddest - is that this is affecting children in such fast-growing numbers these days. Are parents to blame? I don't know, but I'd say probably. They must be educated on the seriousness of diabesity and change their family's lifestyle - and quickly!
