Almost 24 million people suffer from diabetes. There are 3 main types of diabetes; type 1, type 2 and gestational. Gestational diabetes takes place during pregnancy and may or may not develop into type 2 diabetes. There are also millions of people who are pre-diabetic and without dietary and activity changes they may also become type 2 diabetic. Some of the symptoms of diabetes can include frequent urination, excessive thirst, blurry vision and weight loss, but not all diabetes will have these symptoms. It is important to know if you have diabetes so you can incorporate a healthy diet and exercise into your lifestyle.

Why it's Personal to Me

A couple weeks ago, I went to the doctors for a checkup. They did a blood test since my cholesterol was slightly high the last time. I wasn't expecting anything real bad. A week and a half later, I got a call from the doctor's nurse saying my blood sugar was high. She told me that it was 129 and I needed to make an appointment for a 2 hour Glucose Intolerance test. I asked her, if the results of the test were still high, were we talking about diabetes and her answer was "yes". I felt like I was punched in the stomach! I mean I know I'm over weight some. I need to lose about 40 pounds, but I know that is not horrible! I'm only 37 for goodness sakes!!! I never dreamed I may be facing something like this so soon. It was a pretty big wake up call that I REALLY need to change my diet and activity levels. There may be a chance that I am still "pre- diabetic", depending on what my next test results come back as, but no matter what, I still have to do something about it. My lifestyle has to change.

Update-

I found out I did indeed have diabetes. I am now having to monitor my blood sugar, work on eating right, trying to loose weight and taking medicine to lower my blood sugar. This will be an ongoing process for me.

One of the ways to help diabetes is to get plenty of exercise. I am excited that we are going to be able to get a Wii for Christmas!!! I have really been struggling with exercise because of lack of time and with two kids it's hard for me to get out much. I think the Wii is going to be wonderful for our family.

Learn about diabetes.

Diabetes mellitus ( or ; or )?often referred to simply as diabetes?is a condition in which the body either does not produce enough, or does not properly respond to, insulin, a hormone produced in the pancreas. Insulin enables cells to absorb glucose in order to turn it into energy. In diabetes, the body either fails to properly respond to its own insulin, does not make enough insulin, or both. This causes glucose to accumulate in the blood, often leading to various complications.

Many types of diabetes are recognized: The principal three are:
