Why So Unhealthy?
A brief overview of health ignorance in American society
Think about it, do you remember health class in high school? Yea, take a moment... because if your health class was like most, then there's only one proper term to attribute to it: Blow Off!! The health requirements for public high schools in Chicago entailed a semester total (we split it up into quarters) where you basically ran through a bunch of repetitive chatter on sex and drugs. I might recall a week where we devoted study to disease, but in all honesty I can't recall a vivid memory where any portion of our science curriculum focused on maintaining healthy habits, nor was there concrete focus on the study of common illnesses. This lack of information leads Americans to a stage of ignorance that immensely deters us from discerning healthy habits from unhealthy habits. Therefore, the first task on the journey to better diabetes management begins with education! Education is the key to clearing the fog of ignorance and open our minds to many of the common sense phenomena that our bodies go through as a result of our habits. So prepare to be briefed on the facets of diabetes!
Intro to Diabetes
A brief introduction on the characteristics of diabetes
Though most may not know, diabetes actually falls under two categories. For those of you here, most might be familiar with the sugar-affiliated form of diabetes, diabetes mellitus. However, for clearance's sake, diabetes also comes in a different form: diabetes insipidus. This form of diabetes comes from a deficiency or insensitivity to the antidiuretic hormone (ADH). This form of diabetes comes with excessive thirst and frequent urinating, symptoms also associated with diabetes mellitus. Now that you know this, let me say that for the purposes of this lens, diabetes mellitus will remain the focus of choice. Diabetes mellitus results from the body's inability to produce enough insulin in the body. Insulin is a hormone created by the beta cells of the pancreas, and orchestrates the utilization of carbohydrates. Like insipidus, diabetes mellitus occurs through a deficiency (type 1 diabetes) or a resistance (type 2 diabetes) to the hormone insulin. These two forms, although different in nature, reap much of the same damages. Victims experience poor circulation, lethargy, diminishing eyesight, and risk of erectile dysfunction in mails. In untreated and mature cases, diabetics are prone to complete blindness, nerve damage, amputation, coma, and even death.
As stated before, diabetes mellitus has two forms; one based on deficiency and the other based on resistance. Let's examine the events leading to each of the forms.
Type 1 Diabetes - Diabetes 1 is classified as an autoimmune disorder, which basically means that the immune system is attacking a certain part of the body it has no business bothering. In the case of diabetes, the beta cells of the pancreas begin suffering heavy damage from constant immune attack, These cells, responsible for insulin production, soon reach a critical point of near or exact extinction. With a minuscule/diminished beta cell population, the amount of insulin present in the body lacks enough power capable assimilate the carbohydrates your body receives and needs. Victims of type 1 diabetes rely on constant insulin administration through subcutaneous (injections) application, and to this day diabetes 1 remains "incurable". Type 1 Diabetes can effect anyone, although the ailment is commonly associated with children.
Type 2 Diabetes - With diabetes 2, the body's cells do not respond to insulin as effectively as needed, a status properly coined as insulin resistance. However, insulin production within the pancreas might be fine, so rather than a problem producing the hormone, there's a problem accepting the hormone. Though no concrete answer is know, there are easy factors to identify. Type 2 diabetes remained fairly exclusive to adults over 25, but now the stunning influx of obesity increases the age range to a far younger population. Obesity increases insulin resistance due to large amounts of fat tissues. Type 2 diabetes is known for being treated with exercise and diet alone.
Among other factors, diabetes carries an insidious phenomenon I've currently dubbed the "lingering factor". The names fit as such because diabetes, in either case, can exists for years without diagnosis. When I was diagnosed, the stage of my blood sugar indicated that I was diabetic for at least a year before everything came crashing down. Moreover, diabetes 2 can take even longer, with some instances ranging in a 10-year pre-diagnosed affliction!! I urge you to remember this statistic, as you will learn later how this lingering factor alludes to American health.
Now that you have a "101" introduction, we are now ready to dissect the facets of this ailment and rationalize the causes and treatments necessary.
Toxic Body: What Really Causes Diabetes
How the modern lifestyle contributes to bodily toxicity
When first confronted with diabetes, I must imagine that many of you experienced fear, depression, or maybe optimism and confidence. Yet, regardless of your demeanor towards diabetes, I think confusion rarely escapes any who become effected by diabetes. Don't get me wrong here, little blame falls on the individual themselves, after all, when a licensed doctor tells you that no one knows the cause or cure for the disease, then you probably don't challenge that viewpoint. However, as the illness invaded more and more of my daily life, the more vague and distant the "answers" became. Soon, the truth became clearly evident: I have to find out what's going on. Through constant examination of a variety of lifestyle factors, you will notice that the root of poor health, not just diabetes, sits in toxicity. What do I mean by toxicity? Well let me ask you, what's the first thing that pops into your head when you think "toxic"? More than likely, you thought poison or something similar to that. What is the purpose of poison? Simple, poisons often debilitate one or many primary functions to induce a weak, unhealthy, and often fatal state in a given subject. Given this understanding, you can clearly see that toxicity, in a nutshell, contradicts productive health. Toxicity is an important concept to understand in conjunction with modern human lifestyle, especially the lifestyle of the average American. It breeds toxicity.
So you're probably wondering, "What is this guy talking about? How is American lifestyle toxic?" Some of you might have already nibbled at the question and started to pinpoint areas where toxicity might arise. Some of you probably focused on food, or maybe you might point out the overwhelming epidemic of the sedentary. All these daily obstacles and mindsets contribute pieces to the puzzle, yet concrete focus on just one aspect leads to failure. In fact, you'll come to learn that your entire being is functioning on toxicity, not just physically, but mentally!!
In later topics, I will discuss how diet, sedentary living, and abandonment of mental health contribute to to state of human toxicity.
Raw Food: Nature's Dieting Gift
Learn the saving grace of diabetic dieting woes
So if the nutrients (let's not forget that simple sugar and saturated fats are nutrients ha ha) aren't to blame, then what is? What separates the simple sugars of an apple from those in Twinkie? The difference doesn't necessarily come from the nutrient, rather than how the nutrient enters the body. See, although apples and coconuts contain simple sugars and saturated fats, they also come loaded with enzymes, vitamins, and minerals that facilitate the assimilation of these nutrients. The concentration of these sugars and fats comes in direct alignment of these helper nutrients so that they don't deliver anything that can't be utilized by the body.
In stark contrast, however, Twinkies, along with a great deal of the food we eat, lack a vast amount of these vital micronutrients (that's the classification which vitamins and minerals come under) and catalysts (enzymes). How does this end up happening? Well, let's take our friend the twinkie as an example. The Twinkie, like any other food you might see, begin as a bunch of raw materials. These raw materials come with all the nutritional value within that food, including necessary enzymes and micronutrients. However, these raw materials must endure a host of processes including cutting, mixing, heating, and the addition of preservative chemicals. Moreover, the raw ingredients often receive this processing repeatedly before making the dreaded Twinkie.
Processing breaks foods down in an effort to make things more agreeable for consumption. To a point, processing can be good for us, after all, we cut and wash our foods when necessary, and some foods, like broccoli, become way easier to chew and digest when cut down into smaller parts, However, the intense processes implemented in making foods like Twinkies, or in slaughtering and packaging meats among others, shoot the breakdown process all the way to the molecular level. This phenomena truly causes the problem of poor food assimilation. Processing on this level separates enzymes and micronutrients from the macronutrients (carbohydrates, fats, proteins) they accompany. To make matters worse, this modern processing allows totally incompatible foods to fuse into unholy concoctions, like Sir Twinkie or Madam Hostess products.
Think of your body like a car. No matter whether you fill it with regular gas or the choicest of diesel fuels, without a key, your car won't run. In a similar matter, these micronutrients and enzymes function like a key to activate the fuel you put into your body through eating. Without these "keys", then the fuel you ingest is completely useless. Unlike a vehicle, however, your body must at least attempt utilizing these fuels, since the body remains constantly active. As stated in my holistic health lens, your body soon works to the point of exhaustion, and the unused macronutrients build up to a point of increasing bodily acidity.
All of you diabetics here know full and well what I talk of, because the hallmark symptom of diabetes is a dangerous acidic status known as ketoacidosis, resulting from built up glucose in the bloodstream. Now you may be thinking, "I'm not diabetic. This doesn't have anything to do with me." True, you may not have to worry about diabetes specifically, but unless your diet is far from these processed foods, you stand just as big a risk of reaping the poor maladies of their incomplete construction. Those of you with any background and/or experience in the study of human anatomy understand that the body works solely for the sake of preservation, with an abundant array of self-healing mechanisms in place. However, the modern feeding habits of our day transform your body from well-functioned to barely functioning, and in most cases, improperly functioning. Without proper nourishment, your body will work to degeneration rather than regeneration.
Despite this fiasco, solving this dieting hazard is far from rocket science. In order to fix your diet, you must simply eat those foods which are readily consumed in their raw form. What types of foods, you say. I'll give you a second to think about... and if you guessed fruits and vegetables, then you hit the nail right on the head! Uncooked, organic plant food never sees the de-nurturing processes of the Twinkie, and retain the necessary micronutrients required for easy assimilation. Raw foods not only make assimilation easier, put this easing process revitalizes the body back to its natural, healing self!
Now for some of you, hearing this sounds like a tragedy in itself, after all, I know many people who don't see a vegetable on their plate for weeks (yes weeks) at a time. Hopefully, none of you here have that problem, which means you're already ahead of the pack. Moreover, from personal experience, the raw food lifestyle does not have to be some sort of deprived, highly-disciplined practice. Granted, you might need some extra help holding fast to it for the first couple weeks, and depending on how much punishment your body is in, this process might be a bit painstaking. Questions on nutritional "obstacles" may also arise, which I'll discuss and remedy in later posts. However, you need not wait for me to discuss this, since a plethora of resources already exist on the study of raw food dieting. One of these invaluable resources is Raw Power! Building Strength and Muscle Naturally
Next, We'll dive into how you can cure your mind's troubles to give you an almost unfair advantage against diabetes and all illness that threaten our daily lives.

Inspiring Stories
Some Movies that Show Triumph In Taking Control
If you're looking for a little inspiration on your quest, a touching movie you might want to pick up would be Lorenzo's Oil. It's the true account Augusto and Michaela Odone's journey to seek a cure for their son Leronzo's adrenoleukodystrophy. Adrenoleukodystrophy is a damaging disease where the myelin (a fatty membrane that surrounds and protects nerve tissue) is continuously withered away, causing extensive nerve damage which results in just a number of terrible conditions. This story is definitely inspiring for anyone looking to overcome damaging illness, rather for themselves of for someone close to them.
