Insulin is the most common drug associated with diabetes Insulin is a hormone made from pancreatic cells called islets (clusters). Insulin's job is to control the amount of sugar being carried into the blood cells. There are three main types of insulin. The first is "Very Fast Acting". These fast acting insulins are called Insulin Aspart (Novolog)and Lispro (Humalog). These types of insulin shots usually are taken around fifteen minutes before the person eats, seeing as they begin to start working between five and fifteen minutes and lower the blood sugar within two hours.

Some people prefer the very fast acting insulin because it is easier to coordinate between meals. There is also "Fast Acting" insulin; this is regular insulin. Fast acting will lower blood sugar levels anywhere between two and five hours.

The third kind is "Intermediate Acting"; which takes about six to twelve hours. Insulin mixtures are also used to keep diabetes at bay. Every single person who suffers from diabetes suffers differently. Not every single case is the same and different insulin's will be used for different people. The only way to find out whats right for you is to consult with your doctor.

There are several ways to take insulin. Insulin injectors; a spray that goes through the skin, pens; easy to carry needle, and pumps; under the skin tubing system. Pumps are not always the most common method of injecting medication seeing as they are more inexpensive then the other options. You can inject the medication into many parts of your body; arms, thighs, and stomach areas. The medication that you choose should coincide with your exercise routine and your lifestyle and eating choices.

These drugs and medications are necessary in the fight against diabetes. You can not maintain your blood sugar levels if you do not use insulin in some way shape or form. If you want to know what is right for you, consult your doctor.

Sometimes patients tend to think they know what is right for them, when really they are not doing it in a way that would be a hundred times more comfortable.
