Diabetic Foot Complications
- Diabetes can cause nerve-damage. This is most commonly known as diabetic neuropathy. Neuropathy can desensitize your nerves, especially in the extremities. People suffering from severe neuropathy cannot feel heat, cold, or pain in the affected areas. The desensitizing of your feet can lead to the development of sores, cuts, or blisters that go unnoticed for long periods of time.
- Diabetes can cause poor circulation throughout the body. Poor blood flow to the legs and feet is known as peripheral vascular disease. Inadequate blood flow makes it difficult for the body to heal itself after injuries occur.
10 Steps to Maintain Healthy Feet
Prevent injuies to your feet.
Fortunately, damage to the feet can be prevented by following these 10 easy steps.- Choose your footwear carefully. The shoes that you choose to wear should be comfortable when you try them on. Do not get a pair of shoes that need to be broken in or stretched over time. Not wearing the proper shoes can cause calluses and other foot related problems. You may want to consider purchasing shoes that are specially made for diabetics.
- Always protect your feet by wearing shoes or socks, even around the house. This will lessen the chance of accidental injury to your feet.
- Wash your feet daily with warm water. Do not soak your feet in the water, for this may cause your skin to dry out. Dry them thoroughly, especially between the toes, since excess moisture can cause chaffing.
- Apply a diabetic foot cream after you've washed and dried your feet. Do not apply the cream between your toes unless the product says that is ok to do so.
- Make it a habit to check your feet daily for bruises, redness, calluses, blisters, cuts, and ingrown toenails. Ask a family member, friend, or nurse to check your feet if you have difficulty checking them on your own. Always consult with your health care professional if you find any injuries.
- Gently use a pumice stone to control corns or calluses. Improper use of the pumice stone can lead to damage to the skin, so consult with your doctor on how to properly use it to help prevent any injuries from occuring.
- Trim your toenails regularly. Ideally, do this after washing, as the toenails will be soft and easier to clip. It is best to trim the toenails following the natural curve of your toe, rather than in a rounded shape. Do not cut into the corners of your toenails or you may break the skin. File any rough edges with an emery board.
- Do not smoke. Smoking decreases blood flow throughout the body. Poor circulation is already a problem that diabetics must deal with. Smoking will only magnify this complication.
- Increase your physical activity. Exercise increases circulation to your feet and legs. Individuals who have difficulty walking should consider swimming or using a recumbent bicycle.
- Have your doctor check your feet at least four times a year. He or she should check your sense of feeling and your blood flow, as well as show you how to properly care for your feet.
