Diabetic Disease Obesity
Sometimes there is only one gene involved, but most of the time there are several genes that lead to a condition known as diabetes. Many hormone-like substances from fat and immune cells are signaling agents that effect energy metabolism. There are genetic and environmental in obesity and type 2 diabetes. More and more people are diagnosed with it at an alarming rate. Both obesity and diabetes are associated with health and social problems of these diseases.
Type 1 diabetes is more associated with immune factors and not obesity or heredity. The mass majority of people with type 2 diabetes, there is no set genes that predispose them to diabetes. Many genes are not being identified, but until now, there are only 11 confirmed genetic regions that can alter the risk of type 2 diabetes according to Frayling TM. Nat Rev Genet. 2007;8:657-662.
However, the prevalence of diabetes and obesity increase over the past 30 years can't be explained by genetics alone. The environmental factors contribute to the problem. There is an abundance of food and most people with weight problems are relatively inactive. We are very good at storing fat.
It is important to note that lifestyle modification, including reduced calories and increased exercise, is the best way to prevent or slow the progression of both obesity and diabetes.
