The Seventh Book in the Outlander Series
When I was first introduced to the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon I was expecting a nice simple historical romance not a tale of this magnatude. From the beautiful Scottish Highlands to the splender of the French Court. From the battlefield of Culloden to the American Revolution. The books in the Outlander series construct a special place in your heart for the characters and atmosphere of the 18th century.
There are currently seven books already in print: Outlander (called Cross Stitch in the UK), Dragonfly in Amber, Voyager, Drums of Autumn, The Fiery Cross and A Breath of Snow and Ashes. The most recent installment " An Echo In The Bone " follows the amazing story of Jamie and Claire Fraser.
The seventh book is without doubt a masterpiece merging the story of Jamie and Claire with those of the other characters such as Roger and Brianna, Lord John Grey and William 9th Earl of Ellesmere, Ian Murray and it also introduces new characters whom I am sure you will love. The 800 plus pages build up and up until it reaches an amazing cresendo and then opens up to a fast moving conclusion which will leave you wanting more.
Diana currently has several books she is working on including the 8th book in the Outlander series and a full length novel about Lord John Grey called "Lord John and the Scottish Prisioner" if that doesn't excite you enough there is also an Outlander Musical
and an Outlander movie in the pipeline!
An 18th Century Scottish Warrior and his 20th Century Time Travelling Wife ...
The first of the Outlander books begins with feisty combat nurse Claire Beauchamp Randall visiting Scotland with her husband Frank after the ending of the second world war. On a trip to a stone circle, Craigh na Dun, she is thrown back in time to 1743 in the middle of a skirmish between the Clan McKenzies and a group of English dragoons. The Scots, wary of her identity, take her with them to Castle Leoch on the suspicion that she is a spy. Claire is later sought by the corrupt captain of the British garrison and in order to protect her she has little choice to marry the young outlawed highlander Jamie Fraser. Torn between her loyalty to her husband Frank Randall and her own safety she objects to the marriage at first but having already gotten to know Jamie, she knows that he is a man filled with honour and courage who will protect her no matter what the cost. Eventually through the trust they share they fall deeply in love and create a bond so strong and passionate that nothing can tear them apart. Not even two centuries ...The books following Outlander continue the amazing saga of these endearing and charasmatic characters. Diana Gabaldon is truly an exceptional writer and her amazing ability to describe the drama, passion and violence of 18th century Scotland makes these books the most memorable I have ever read. Whilst many would describe the books as "historical romance" that is only partially true. The love story between James Alexander Malcolm McKenzie Fraser and Claire Beauchamp Randall is the backbone which runs throughout the books but to describe it as a historical romance is almost an insult to these amazing books. If you are expecting a fluffy story and a light read these books aren't for you. They are gritty, harsh, tragic and barbaric in places but this of offset with oodles of courage, determination, humour and passion.

In the wake of a devastating fire in the mountains of North Carolina, Highlander Jamie Fraser and his English wife find themselves homeless and without family, in the midst of the gathering storm of revolution. And thanks to his time-travelling wife's information, he knows what the coming spring of 1778 will bring. But then Jamie's illegitimate son, William, arrives in North Carolina, a young officer in King George's army. Jamie has sworn two things to himself: his son will never know his true paternity - and he himself will never face his son across the barrel of a gun. Between the mountains of North Carolina and those of the Scottish highlands lie blockades and battlefields, storm and shipwreck, privateers and politics. The one thing that sustains the Frasers in their struggle is the hope that their family has reached safety in the future. They have. The Frasers' daughter and her family have returned safely through the standing stones that guard the passage through time, and to Scotland. But something mysterious looms over their new home. Something whose secret may draw them back to what they fled from...

Favourite Quotes From Outlander
Jamie: I said I was a virgin, not a monk ... If I find I need guidance, I'll ask
Claire: Do you really believe me Jamie?
Jamie: Aye, I believe you, Sassenach. But it would have been a good deal easier if you'd only been a witch.
Jamie: I will find you, I promise. If I must endure two hundred years of purgatory, two hundred years without you ... then that is my punishment, which I have earned for my crimes. For I have lied, and killed, and stolen; betrayed and broken trust. But there is one thing that shall lie in the balance. When I shall stand before God, I shall have one thing to say, to weigh against the rest. Lord, ye gave me a rare woman, and God! I loved her well"

The Outlander Movie ...
... or mini-series!
Diana Gabaldon has been asked many times if her books will ever be made into an Outlander Movie and the answer is .... YES!
The specific details are still fairly thin on the ground but Randall Wallace (Braveheart, Pearl Habour) has taken up the challenge and initial work has been started on finding someone to write the screenplay. The question on everyone's lips now is who they will find to play the main characters?
My Jamie !!!
However he's not a 23 year old anymore and maybe lacks the vunerability of the young Jamie. Although he would be an excellent choice to play Jamie in the later books.

If you loved Diana Gabaldon try the Wilderness series by Sara Donati
I have so far only read the first few books in this series but would highly recommend it. I would describe it as being very much in the style of Diana Gabaldon but without the timetravel and without Jamie Fraser! (Although Nathaniel Bonner is a very fine specimin of manhood too!)

- I am a HUGE Diana Gabaldon fan. Her characters resonate for me as no others have and I am a voracious reader. People are skeptical when they hear the time-travel premise, but I URGE YOU to give it a chance, it takes a while to take off but..once you get deep into this book, you'll have to read the whole series!. If you love believable historical romance, if you had all but given up on good fiction (I had, for a long time) - if you felt like they were insulting your intelligence with unbelievable premise, you will feel like you have arrived at the Promised Land with these beautiful and very original books. She sets them deep in real historical events and pretty soon all you want to do is go away in a corner and immerse yourself in them. 1) Outlander 2) Dragonfly in Amber 3) Voyager and 4) Drumns of Autumn are my very favorites, but love all 7 of the current books and wait for books 8 and 9!

- The only thing Jamie and James McAvoy have in common is that both are scottish. McAvoy is simply to cute. I like him as an actor, but I couldn't even imagine him chipping wood let alone be a feared warrior in the 45.
Though Gerard hits the 40s next month he still is the best choice even for the young Jamie. Lets be honest, no one could portray Jamie and all of his facets like Gerard could. And being so convertible it shouldn't be a problem to make him look like 23

- I love these books! I don't know if any actor could come close to how I have Jamie pictured in my mind. He has to be tall, have red hair and a Scottish accent. He has to have the ability to be both tender and tough. Adrian Paul might have been a good choice but he may be too old now. Lensrolled to Men in Kilts.
