A Christmas Carol (full title, A Christmas Carol. In Prose. Being A Ghost Story of Christmas) is a novella by English author Charles Dickens about a miserly, cold, unfeeling, old curmudgeon and his secular conversion and redemption after being visited by four ghosts on Christmas Eve. The book was first published on 19 December 1843 with illustrations by John Leech, and quickly met with commercial success and critical acclaim. The tale has been viewed as an indictment of nineteenth century industrial capitalism and has been credited with returning the holiday to one of merriment and festivity in Britain and America after a period of sobriety and sombreness. A Christmas Carol remains popular, has never been out of print,Douglas-Fairhurst viii and has been adapted to film, opera, and other media.

Charles John Huffam Dickens, FRSA (; 7 February 1812-9 June 1870), pen-name "Boz", was the most popular English novelist of the Victorian era, and one of the most popular of all time. He created some of literature's most iconic characters, with the theme of social reform running throughout his work. The continuing popularity of his novels and short stories is such that they have never gone out of print."What the Dickens?", by Simon Swift. The Guardian, Wednesday 18 April 2007. "Dickens's books have never gone out of print.""Victorian squalor and hi-tech gadgetry: Dickens World to open in England", Bloomberg News, 23 May 2007.

Much of his work first appeared in periodicals and magazines in serialised form, a popular way of publishing fiction at the time. Other writers would complete entire novels before serial publication commenced, but Dickens often wrote his in parts, in the order they were meant to appear. The practice lent his stories a particular rhythm, punctuated by one "cliffhanger" after another, to keep the public eager for the next installment.Stone, Harry. Dickens Working Notes for His Novels, Chicago, 1987

His work has been praised for its mastery of prose, and for its teeming gallery of unique personalities, by writers such as George Gissing and G. K. Chesterton, though the same characteristics have prompted others, such as Henry James and Virginia Woolf, to criticize him for sentimentality and implausibility.Henry James, "Our Mutual Friend", The Nation'', 21 December 1865.

A Christmas Carol Bible Study
Written by Primetime Parable Ministries, this Bible study may be purchased for a very reasonable fee. But that's not why I listed it here. I was impressed on the Bible references given to the characters and situations in the story. I've read and seen the movie in many formats dozens of times, but I had never quite thought of it in the way it is presented here. Check it out to see the main themes and Scriptural passages. If you click around, you will also find an interesting story about Mr. Dicken's Christian faith, again, something I was never aware of before.

A Christmas Carol (Ultimate Collector's Edition)(B/W & Color)

This movie brings back fond many memories. Each year in a local town is held a weekend celebration called "Old Fashioned Christmas". There are parades, concerts, displays, tours, plays, activities, art shows, and other exciting activities. The entire town is decorated in Victorian fashion ~ at businesses, homes, street lamps, you name it. Costumed actors in Victorian garb walk throughout the celebration bringing entertainment and information. It really makes one feel they have gone back in time to Victorian England at the time of "Scrooge". For several years after returning home after the exciting evening, we would get a fire going in the fireplace, curl up in a nice toasty comforter, drink some hot cocoa to warm up the fingers, taste a few Christmas cookies, and relax while watching this classic movie version of "A Christmas Carol". The original was in black and white, but it has been modernized with color. (I prefer the old black and white!) This DVD contains both so you can bring yourself back in time with Mr. Scrooge anytime you want.

I had to add this video!

It is a drawing and puppet interpretation of "A Christmas Carol" from a family done on Christmas Eve. From the credits at the end (almost 17 minutes long), it appears that several family members and friends participated in this interesting version.

As a teacher, I was trying to think of other ways that a class or family could present this tale. Hhmmm ...

SAT Words from Literature - A Christmas Carol

"SAT Words from Literature presents a new approach to scoring high on the Scholastic Aptitude Test. Rather than taking words directly from a dictionary and studying them, SAT Words from Literature presents vocabulary words that are found in classic literature in their original context. In this way, you will get a clear understanding of what the word can do in a sentence, what it might mean, and how it is used. Each vocabulary word is highlighted in the text and also reproduced in bold on the facing page; the entry concludes with the word's part of speech as it is used in the book, its pronunciation, and an appropriate definition, with a synonym or antonym if applicable. Exercises that test your understanding of the vocabulary words are included at the end of the book. To make the exercises more manageable, words are arranged by chapters, or sections, so that there are not too many words in any one group. We hope that your understanding of vocabulary is increased, and that your score on the SAT will be improved by using this book."
