im confused. why is the king's position is changing. in one arrangement 2 kings are facing each other (eg: http://0.tqn.com/d/chess/1/0/5/1/-/-/New-Ruy-Lopez.jpg)
and in another arrangement the 2 kings are diagonally placed (eg: http://m.itsyourturn.com/help/cksetup.gif)
    which arrangement is correct?
    please clear my doubt.

    reply waiting.

Hi Renu, the first image you link to looks like a conventional chess game, the second being a variation on Fischer Random or Shuffle chess, with pieces being transposed rather than mirrored.

Has anyone entertained the idea of having the pieces move differently? Say, the pawns move laterally and capture straight ahead? Or the bishops move like the rooks and vice versa? Or the queen's knight can only make a right hand turn and the king's knight a left? Or white plays the regular moves and black plays the altered ones? Lots more variations possible.

Bill, whilst an interesting idea, I can't see it being popular as it would be most confusing having pieces use moves associated with other pieces. Also, only applying an alternate rule to one player would perhaps lead to a considerable bias in the game. Thanks for your suggestions though.

hi.......me and all my friends play ---KINGS GUARD CHESS--- you just tie a red string to the pawn in front of the king and it becomes the kings guard...........it moves and takes the same as a king...........(doesnt change if it reaches the back row).

I am having enough trouble teaching "normal" chess to my children, let alone any variations. However, this is a great resource. 5 checkmates to you!

Chess is a fun game, even though I'm not to good at it.

When teaching kids to play chess for the first time I use a mini game variant called Queens Battle. It's great fun they get a chance to jump straight in and play a competitive game whilst learning how the pieces move around the board. You can find the rules on my blog Learn to play chess with Fritz.

Thank You for the clarification Jason, I had not previously been aware of this rule so had not included it. I have amended the instructions above to add this now.
Thanks for getting in touch! :)

As the inventor of Nuclear Chess, I should note that when the pieces take, the square also is a "Dead Square" in that it's no longer a part of the board. Pieces cannot move onto or through the dead square.
