Different Types of Resumes. How Many Resume Types Are There?

When you're about to put your resume together, one of the first decisions you'll need to make is to choose from one of the different types of resumes. Which type of resume are you going to use? It's important to pick the correct type.

Resume Type: Chronological

The Chronological type is one of the best ways to present your information if you have a lot of experience and want to stay in the same field. It's the perfect type to list your past jobs in the reverse order. It's often called the Reverse Chronological.

You don't want to have many, if any big gaps in your employment history if you want to use this one. If you do, it'll stand out like a sore thumb and your prospective employer may take a pass on you before you even get started.

Resume Type: Functional

OK, I can't really sing and dance, but if I could I would want to list it in my resume.

So, what if I currently danced more than I sing, but I want to sing more than I dance?

Well I would use the Functional Resume.

Especially if I have sang and danced but haven't gotten paid for it. Maybe you have the skill, but it's a new skill.

Or you may want to highlight certain skills to help turn your career in more a direction you want to go. Make it Functional!

Resume Type: Combination

Now you've found it.

The Combination Type does just what the name implies. It combines the benefits of the Chronological and Functional types into one, SUPER RESUME!

OK, maybe it's not a SUPER RESUME, but the Combination Type will allow you to list your talents and your strengths, then follow that with a list of your employment history.

No, I didn't. But that's because it's not really a resume type. But it's a good idea to think about your target audience when your write your resume. No matter which type of resume you choose, you'll want to TARGET the information to your prospective employer.

In this day and age of computers and word processors, there's no excuse in sending a resume full of information that is not targeted to your prospective employer. This is especially true if you're young and not really sure which direction to go.
