Russian Pop Sensation: Dima Bilan

Dima Bilan, (born December 24, 1981) is a young Russian vocalist who won the Eurovision Song Contest 2008 with his song "Believe".

This is a far cry from Ust-Dzheguta, a small industrial town in Karachayevo-Cherkessia - an impoverished and volatile Muslim province of southern Russia, where Bilan was born Viktor Belan.

When he was six, his family moved to Maisky in the nearby province of Kabardino-Balkaria.

He took his first steps in music as a soloist in a local children's choir and learned to play the accordion. He also starred in local music festivals in southern Russia before becoming the household name there that he is today.

While now a pop sensation in the former Eastern Bloc, he is relatively unknown in the West. His win at Eurovision may be the springboard that he has been looking for in order to gain international recognition.

A Little About Dima Bilan

Vocal sensation Dima Bilan commanded Europe's attention in May 2006 when he represented Russia at the Eurovision Song Contest in Athens, Greece. Bilan received enough votes to secure second place behind Finland's entry, with a great stage performance of his hit single "Never Let You Go".

His success comes on the back of a classical scholarship from the Gnesin Academy of Music. While there, he became acquainted with a top Russian showbusiness manager, the late Yuriy Aizenshpis, who became his manager in Russia. In 2003, he graduated and decided to enhance his vocal skills further by becoming a student of GITIS (The State Institute of Theatrical Art), where he studies now.

Since the release of his first single in Russia in 2003, Dima Bilan has emerged as one of the most popular and widely acclaimed talents from that country - recognized with some of the most prestigious accolades in the industry. One of the first steps in Bilan's career was his participation in the "Jurmala" contest, a popular music contest held in Eastern Europe.

Following this, Bilan released three platinum albums, among them: "Ia Nochnoy Hooligan" ("The Night Hooligan", 2003), and "Na Beregu Neba" ("Between the Sky and Heaven", 2004), on which he collaborated with world-famous songwriter Diane Warren. This sold over 2,000,000 copies in Russia and the CIS. In September 2005, he won two gongs at the MTV Russia Music Awards for Best Performer and Artist of the Year.

His Eurovision hit single "Never Let You Go" catapulted Bilan to superstar status and placed him on top of the Russian charts in May 2006, where he stayed for 24 weeks! In October 2006, this single was released successfully in a number of other European countries.

In July 2006, he was one of four artists who took part in the biggest musical event in Russia of 2006 - "The Red Summer" show in Red Square in Moscow, where he performed on stage with Shakira, The Black Eyed Peas and t.A.T.u.

In September 2006, for the second year in a row, he won Artist of the Year and Song of the Year at the MTV Russia Music Awards.

In February/March 2007, Bilan recorded his first international album in English, in collaboration with sound producer Timbaland and his production team: Danjahandz, Jim Beanz and Ryan Tedder from One Republic. One of the tracks is a duet with one of Timbaland's most successful artists, Nelly Furtado. This new album is due to be released in the United States and Europe in 2008, and the first single from it is a Jim Beanz penned song "Number 1 Fan", the video for which was shot in London.

Currently Dima Bilan is finishing recordings for the Spanish version of the album with top Latin music producer and Grammy-winning songwriter Rudy Perez, world-famous for his work with Julio Iglesias, Christina Aguilera and Beyonce.

Dima Bilan: "Never Let You Go" Song Lyrics

Heavy clouds, no rain
And every move causes pain
Ready kiss, but no love
I feel I'm torn in half
Ardent look, but no heat
It's not you really need
Baby, now it's happened with us
We are dancing on broken glass
Can't stand no more

Never, never let you go
You are the one I'm searching for
Flesh of my flesh, bone of my bone
Love's carving it in the stone
Never, never let you go
Return the days we had before
Soul of my soul, blood of my blood
Love's carving it in my heart

Gentle words, no aim
It seems we're playing a game
Easy smile, but no fun
Sweet music for no one
Close embrace, but no more
Cold Champagne we forgot to pour
Baby now it's happened with us
We are dancing on broken glass
Can't stand no more

Never, never let you go
You are the one I'm searching for
Flesh of my flesh, bone of my bone
Love's carving it in the stone
Never, never let you go
Return the days we had before
Soul of my soul, blood of my blood
Love's carving it in my heart

Dima Bilan Sings the Winning Eurovision 2008 Song

Believe

On March 9th, 2008 Dima Bilan won the Russian national final of the Eurovision Song Contest 2008, gathering maximum points from the jury and from the TV-voting.

Thus, he was chosen to represent Russia once again at Eurovision, this time in Belgrade, Serbia with the song "Believe", which Bilan penned together with Jim Beanz. The song won the Contest on May 24.

The concept of Bilan's unique choreography is the essence of the song itself: believing in oneself, friendship and those people close to you, thereby overcoming difficulties in life and ending up victorious.

Dima Bilan: "Believe" Song Lyrics

Even when the thunder and storm begins
I'll be standing strong like a tree in the wind
Nothing's gonna move this mountain
Or change my direction
I'm falling off that sky and I'm all alone
The courage that's inside is gonna break my fall
Nothing's gonna dim my light within

But if I keep going on
It will never be impossible, not today

Cause I've got something to believe in
As long as I'm breathing
There is not a limit to what I can dream
Cause I've got something to believe in
Mission to keep climbing
Nothing else can stop me if I just believe
And I believe in me

Even when the world tries to pull me down
Tell me that I can, try to turn me around
I wont let them put my fire out, without no!

But if I keep going on
It will never be impossible, not today

Cause I've got something to believe in
As long as I'm breathing
There is not a limit to what I can dream
Cause I've got something to believe in
Mission to keep climbing
Nothing else can stop me if I just believe
And I believe:

I can do it all
Open every door
Turn unthinkable to reality
You'll see- I can do it all and more!

Believing
As long as I'm breathing
There is not a limit to what I can dream
Cause I've got something to believe in
Believing
Mission to keep climbing
Nothing else can stop me if just believe
And I believe me.
