Dining Room Design Tips & Trends!

I think every home regardless of size needs a table and chairs to sit down and enjoy your meal with minimal outside distractions like television. You know they say that people who eat slower do tend to not have as many weight issues as those who eat fast. I don't know about you, but if I feel rushed or am watching television while eating I do eat faster. So for no other reason I think eating at a table is a great idea.

This lens will explore how to set up your dining room for success.

Important!

"Even in a formal dining room you don't want to be ponderous or gloomy. Eating is really one of your indoor sports. You play three times a day, and it's well worthwhile to make the game as pleasant as possible."

How To Select The Correct Size Chandelier

Rule of thumb for hanging your dining chandeliers

Following are sizing and positioning guidelines to help you to select the correct chandelier.

When choosing a chandelier for your dining room, it should neither overpower your table nor look too small.

With that said, measure your table (if it's round, measure its diameter, if it's a rectangle, measure its width), and then subtract 12" from that number. For example, if you have a 42"-wide table, your chandelier should be 30" in diameter. A properly proportioned chandelier comes to within 6" of each edge of the table. Using this easy formula will help you achieve that balance. Note, some manufacturers offer oval chandeliers for extra long rectangular tables.

Proper positioning is very important for a balanced look. Since a chandelier is the focal point in your dining room, it should hang over the center of your table. If the electrical connection in your ceiling doesn't match up with the table's center, insert a heavy duty decorative hook into the ceiling above the center of the table, then attach a length of decorative chain to carry the wiring from the electrical connection to the hook or better yet have an electrician center it for you.

The bottom of your chandelier should be 30" above the tabletop if you have 8' ceilings. If your ceilings are higher than 8', raise the chandelier 3" for every extra foot of height.

Lastly I can't stress enough how important dimmers are. I think they are a great investment for any dining room and really make a difference in setting a mood.

Setting the Table

The Great Indoors is a great store if you are lucky to live near one otherwise their site is great too. They have wonderful tableware to choose from, from your casual everyday to a more formal setting.

Hurry and shop here before the sale ends May 16th.

  • TABLEWARE:
There are so many great choices in tableware from unusual shapes, to fun patterns, to wonderful color palettes.

I think the most important thing in choosing tableware other than the style is making sure they are dishwasher safe and microwave safe. Some of those handmade ones aren't and that is a pain.

I am a household of 2, but have 8 daily table settings. I then don't have to run my dishwasher as much and I am ready when I need to serve a casual meal to 8 people too. I think 4 is never enough, 6 is pushing it but 8-10 is just right.

I love to see mix and matched place settings, it really spunks up a table. I unfortunately have all new stuff so it doesn't necessarily work for my situation but when I go to friends homes I always love it when they do this.

If you have china do you use it for other purposes than special occasions? My Mom loves eating off of china for all occasions, she claims it makes her meal taste better. So break out the china for occasions that aren't always so special for no other reason than to have your food taste good.
  • FLATWARE:
First off let me start off with silverware. I hate it. I am not sure what earlier generations were thinking but the maintenance is high and not for me.

Standard flatware is great. Again lots of choices and even colors and best of all most can be washed in the dishwasher.
  • GLASSWARE:
I am a sucker for crystal but not for my everyday because they can only be handwashed. I always buy more glasses than I think I will need for unexpected company and for my occasional clumsiness, you may want to consider it too.

How To Determine What Size Rug Works With Your Dining Room Table

What size works for you?

Basically you don't want your chairs falling off or getting caught up on an area rug that is too small and you want the rug to work visually with the dining table.

To determine what size of rug should be used in a dining room, measure the top of the dining table and add 24 inches (some experts say 27 to 30 inches) all around. This allows space for a person to get in and out of the chair and to move closer to the table or move back from the table and all the while the back legs of the chair are able to remain on the rug.

Other furniture in the dining area, such as a china cabinet or serving table, should not be on the rug, only the dining table and chairs.

Dining Room Rug Source

Start shopping now for that perfect dining room rug, what are you waiting for?

This site has a great search engine for area rugs. Remember if this is going under your dining room table make sure it's not too thick that it's hard to tuck a chair in our out. And you may want to consider patterns on your rug, it is a dining room rug so there will eventually something spilt on it and patterns hide a lot more.

How I Can Help With Your Dining Room

Professional Advice For A Do-It-Yourself Price

Wouldn't it be great if there was a design service that could arm you with a custom, professional plan for you to execute without having to pay the steep price for a full service local Interior Designer?

Now there is!

In todays world, location doesn't have to be a barrier for getting expert design help.

It seems like everyone always has questions or need some level of help in their own personal remodels. Are you one of them? Do you want fast, affordable, professional decorating advice before you tackle your next room?

Decorator On Demand is designed especially for you.

I am an experienced residential Interior Designer who is ready when you are to build a custom room recommendation that reflects your taste, goals and budget.

Enjoy the satisfaction of professionally decorating your home yourself. Get professional, unbiased advice and a custom room design with a detailed action plan.

Save time, money and stomach acid.

Just $249 per room, a fraction of what a local Interior Designer would charge.

So we work as a team.....I create the "Concept" and you make it a "Reality"!

This works for all of you who have angst about "next steps" or are scared about what to do or how to get started.

We have all had the well intentioned stylish family and friends who after their comments and suggestions were given, were insulted when you didn't take all their advice. Who needs it?

All I need to start this process from you are some pics, measurements and my "Get To Know My Room" questionnaire filled out for us to start. I go to work from there putting together an actionable/detailed plan, 90% of the time with links to national retailers for furnishing needs so you get the "idea" of what I am conveying to you. A lot of times my clients end up buying that furniture but you aren't obligated at all, I make no money on those.

My design recommendation covers all aspects of the room, ie: flooring, paint choices, furnishings, window treatments.

Email is great isn't it? That is the way I communicate with all my DOD clients. I am fast with my recommendation and then I allow you to have me for a day of back and forth email if you have any questions to make sure you are completely comfortable with the plan for you to execute.

I have been doing this for almost 5 years now and this concept works. At the end of the day, my intention of starting this company was to help you and so I want you happy and satisfied.

So come check out my website and if you have any questions please feel free to email me as well.
