A Brief Discussion Of The Various Types Of Directors Chairs

As someone who makes my living selling art at fairs and festivals I understand the importance of a good quality directors chair. I also think that different chairs suit different functions better. Though one really good directors chair can probably work for most situations.

When you're spending all day working the booth it's extremely important to have a comfortable and sturdy chair which is collapsible for easy hauling. And is lightweight enough to not add to your already over crowded, heavily packed vehicle. While this is my third lens covering art fair gear and accessories it is more a resource for purchasing than the others.

While this page was created for vendors working their gig these chairs are also excellent for camping, tailgating or just your backyard use.

The Varieties Of Directors Chairs Discussed On This Page Are:
Wood Chairs
Tall Aluminum Chairs
Short Aluminum Chairs
Heavy Duty Over-Sized Chairs
Camp Chairs

The two things to consider about your seating when doing events are:

1. Aluminum vs. Wood Wood chairs look nicer, but do tend to show wear after being hauled around. Wood requires some special packing to avoid too much damage. Aluminum chairs are light weight and are easier to pack because they generally ride anywhere in your vehicle.

2. Chair Height The taller director's chairs allow you to remain seated while still looking in your patron's eye. But they also tend to tip easier on uneven ground. The shorter chairs while more stable, means you have to (or at least you should) stand up whenever talking with a customer. You may think that's hardly worth considering. But trust me on this, after you stand up for like the 500th time from a low chair you will consider the benefits of a taller chair more thoroughly.

Wood Directors Chairs

Using Directors Chairs At Art Fairs

I really like the look of wood directors chairs and use them a lot for indoor events. I prefer the tall style because then when people come up to talk with you, you are seated at eye level. With shorter chairs you will have to stand up whenever approached by a patron. This may seem a small thing but trust me. After sitting down and standing up several hundred times a day for a couple of days in a row it really does get hard on the thighs. And to remain seated is not an option since it borders on rude and at the very least is not a good salesman practice.

What I Like About Wood Directors Chairs
* They have a more elegant look for indoor events
* You can if you so choose have your backrest monogrammed
* You can interchange the seats and backrest when they get worn or you just want a new color.

Though I do occasionally use a wood directors chair outside, I generally prefer not to.

Why I Prefer NOT To Use A Wood Chair At Outdoor Events
* If it rains they sink into the ground
* They are more tip prone on Uneven surfaces
* They are heavy and require special packing to keep them from getting marred up.
* They are wood and can potentially break

Standard Aluminum Directors Chairs

What I Like About The Standard Sized Aluminum Directors Chair
* These work well for the more casual events or craft fairs.
* They are lightweight
* They are easy to pack as they don't take up much space.
* Being lower to the ground means they are very stable and won't tip easily

Oversized Heavy Duty Directors Chairs

Using Directors Chairs For Events

Most of these chairs are designed to hold quite a bit of weight and so work fine for the average person.

A Couple Of Reason To Get An Over Sized Directors Chair
* Often at events people will sit in an empty chair usually without asking. Even though you may be of average size. It doesn't mean all patrons and passers by are.
* A little extra toughness and durabitlity is always a good thing when it comes to doing events that require a lot of use and wear and tear.
* After a long day sometimes it's nice to slouch a bit in a roomier chair.

A Directors Chair Accesory For Outdoor Evets

This of course is an outdoor art event kinda of thing. But trust me when your sitting out on pavement or even in a grassy park a little patch of private shade makes a huge amount of difference in your comfort. Not to mention helping to protect you from sunlight UV dangers.

Note: Be aware that on windy days umbrellas will tip and drag your chair when your not in it.

Folding Camp Chairs

And Lastly a brief word about camp chairs. These little chairs are a great casual all occasion chair. We have several and use them quite often.

Why I Like Camp Chairs
* They are good for extremely casual events
* They fold up to take up almost no room.
* Light weight and easy to carry. They usually come with their own carry bag.
* Cheap and easy to replace
* When they get wet the nylone drys very quickly
* Gotta love dual cupholders

Directirs Chairs are really great chairs. I sgtrongly prefer the wooden ones, but must admit that the aluminum ones are much better for the beach.

I never knew that there were so many different kinds of directors chairs. A few of those even look like they could be folding camp chairs, like what we bring when we sit around a fire or something. I think my favorite of those would be the Ming's Mark SL1204-BLUE, it certainly does look comfy!
