Find inspiration in poetry

When dealing with a disability, you look for things to hold onto. Regardless of what it is, you need a distraction. For me, I find inspiration in poetry.

Sometimes words are all we have, and the words contained within this lens have gotten me through some tough times. Here you will find various poems that hold some kind of personal meaning to me - from raising special needs children, to Charcot Marie Tooth and more!

I hope someone else will find them as inspirational and motivating as what I have.

Heavens Child

Heaven Sent

A meeting was held quite far from earth
"It's time again for another birth"
Said the angels to the Lord above,
"This special child will need much love"

His progress may seem very slow
Accomplishments he may not show
And he will require special care
From the folks he meets way down there.

He may not run or laugh or play
His thoughts may seem quite far away
In many ways he won't adapt
And he be known as handicapped.

So let's be careful where he's sent
We want his life to be content
Please Lord, find the parents who
Will do a special job for you.

They may not realize right away
The leading rold they're asked to play
But with this child sent from above
Comes stronger faith and richer love.

And soon they'll know the privilege given
In caring for this gift from Heaven
Their precious charge, so meek and mild
Is Heaven's Very Special Child.

Just The Way I Am

Doing time for no known crime
Has been difficult for me
It's hard to live with chronic pain
That others cannot see

The thief that robbed my body
Stole my strength and left me pain
I do my very best to cope
I struggle to stay sane

I miss our get-togethers
I miss shopping at the mall
It hurts me to be left behind
It's not my choice at all

I long for how it used to be
When I could join right in
To do the fun and simple things
With family and friends

You seldom call or visit
You're tired of it, I guess
Of always asking, "Come along"
And never hearing, "Yes"

I ache to be with all of you
I wish I could explain
How doing 'normal' things in life
Can cause me so much pain

I'm trapped inside this body
With pain that has no end
I grieve for all the things I've lost
I'd like them back again

When I decline to join you
Please try to understand
It's not that I don't want to
It's just the way I am

One Person Can Make A Difference

If each grain of sand were to say:
One grain does not make a mountain,
There would be no land.

If each drop of water were to say:
One drop does not make an ocean,
There would be no sea.

If each note of music were to say:
Each note does not make a symphony,
There would be no melody.

If each word were to say:
One word does not make a library,
There would be no book.

If each brick were to say:
One brick does not make a wall,
There would be no house.

If each seed were to say:
One seed does not make a field,
There would be no harvest.

If each of us were to say:
One person does not make the difference,
There would never be love and peace on earth.

You and I do make the difference,
Begin today and make the difference.
