Disc Golf, nothing more fun with your clothes on!
This lens is about my favourite pass time. Disc Golf, or Frisbee Golf as known by some. However because of it's generic qualities the term disc golf is usually used so as not to offend those in the "Frisbee" industry. So...having said that, welcome to disc golf! For the last 5 years this sport has ruled my spare time, and dominated my thoughts on how I can improve anything related to the sport. Disc Golf started way back in the 70's when some bored people became inspired and Now there are over 2500 disc golf courses across North America alone. Television stations now have programs dedicated to the sport and advertise in publications such as Disc Golf Magazine. www.discgolftv.com is a great example of this also...
Being free and easy to learn people all around the world are playing outside for a change due to the availability and ease of the sport. Charlottetown PEI is hoping to be the next city to offer this to locals and tourists alike, absolutely free! Discs usually cost around 10-15 dollars, so start up cost for the sport is insanely low which makes it affordable for any and all demographics. If you can't afford to buy a disc and "frisbee" can be used just the same. Unlike the standard golf game disc golf is played 12 months of the year further increasing the value of the sport on any community.
If you are in the Charlottetown area and wish to try this great new sport, feel free to email me here, or look for my crazy blue and white van around town and ask about the sport. Chances are if you see the van near a park, I am likely playing somewhere nearby. Keeps your eyes to the sky, and watch for me near by. Be sure to check out the video below on how to play the game, but be warned that this game can be highly addictive and supports generous amounts of happiness.

Isn't disc golf like playing fetch with yourself?
Moving on we talk about the many benefits of the sport and how it promotes awareness of nature as you play through it. For the last 30 years Disc Golf has been played by thousands of people across North America. Today the game is being played world wide with annual competitions that draw quite literally from around the world. Japan and Norway have some of the best courses on the circuit. Not to mention my favourite courses from right here in Canada! Pender Island BC and of course Cortes Island, Linnea Farms public course. Wicked ups and down and amazing landscapes.
After having been in the Maritimes now for a few months, I am really missing the energy from public disc golf courses. Watching people play their way through trees as laughter erupts from people in their group putting a little "body english" into the throw to help guide it along. As if somehow they were flying the disc they just released with their hips. My favourite course personally is Bowen Park Nanaimo BC. Big beautiful trees, lots of grass, tennis courts constantly being used, lawn bowling being played by all the active seniors in the area, and people walking their dogs. It was wonderful. Long graceful shots that seem to float forever. It was great hanging out in the park watching people play. It was rejuvenating to my spirit.
My wife Colleen and I have designed an 18 hole course in Cotton Park, Stratford PEI. So far we have managed to play at least once a week and see people constantly walking the paths as we play and we never have a problem with interaction. We always encourage people to come out and play if they see us out.
One other thing to know about Disc Golf is the easy implementation into school systems. There is a program developed specifically around disc golf called E.D.G.E. (Educational Disc Golf Experience) www.edgediscgolf.org -that is wonderful. It incorporates school subjects like math and science as well as positive interactions between people sharing the park. For school aged kids that is fundamental. The average cost of discs are usually around $10 to $15 and the courses can be made for free if you have resources in your area. Other options are to fund raise for targets through corporate challenges or individual sponsorships for each tee and target. Like most areas in the Maritimes land is usually the hardest part. Disc golf is great because it can use land that isn't suitable for other things such as farming. It can be played in the trees, as well as in the open so the possibilities are endless really. If local courses are built they can be used to draw people to the area to promote tourism, staying over night, eating and shopping. People who play golf may not go to an area to play one course, unless it is an incredible course. But they will go to an area if there are lots of course as P.E.I. is famous for. The same holds true for disc golf. People love to play! Tournaments can be held annually to further promote the area and the sport. Last year in BC the Senior Games opened to the game of Disc Golf. It was introduced as a spectators sport and had a fare turn out. Leagues are formed and communities promoted centered entirely around playing outside with your friends. I would be more than happy to show any and all that are interested so feel free to contact us here or wherever you see us playing. Cheers!
