Underkingdom: Disco Goblins vs The Machine

Disco Goblins vs The Machine is the first of three planned books in the Underkingdom series. This is a fantasy novel for children that should also appeal to grown-ups and young adults. An unexpected school trip leads Angelica into the strange and dangerous Underkingdom, where she meets a timid goblin called Plopbottle whose passion for all things human includes 1970's disco music and Earl Grey tea. Together, they will have to defeat a ruthless king, rescue Angelica's schoolmates before they become the filling in a giant pie, and stop a monstrous war machine, which rises from the earth taking the heart of central London with it.

Plopbottle

Plopbottle was a very timid creature. This was partly due to his size (it's hard to be brave when you're less than two feet tall), but mainly this was just the way he was. There was nothing he liked more than to hide himself away in the deepest recesses of the Great Engine, surrounded on all sides by the buzz and hum of the machinery, far removed from the cruel and dangerous world of his people.

Angelica

'Honestly darling, you are not going to school looking like that are you?'

Angelica turned to face the smartly dressed woman, framed in the doorway.

'What's wrong with this? It's the same stuff I always wear. Well, more or less.'

Angelica looked down at her slightly torn and tattered PVC jacket, the studded leather belt and black leather skirt, the striped leggings underneath this and on her feet the only two basketball shoes she had been able to find; one was purple, the other lime green.
