Discus Fish Secrets and Tips

How to care and breed your discus fish ...the correct way!

More people breed discus fish than any other exotic fish. Why? Probably because they are so colorful and beautiful to watch and they are not hard to breed - if you know what you are doing.

Discus Fish Are ....

Discus are sensitive fish and change their behavior based on their environment. So if you want to raise happy, healthy fish, you need to know some things about them.

For instance, Discus fish are generally shy, but can become aggressive toward others. This aggressiveness is because they are jealous of their breeding area. That means only the strong will survive and the weak will be eliminated. To re-solve this problem, try keeping them in groups of, say, no more than 6. By living in these "groups" they become aware and accustomed to each other and consequently their behavior is a lot less aggressive.

Discus Breeding

Match Maker, Match Maker, Make Me a Match

Don't try and play match maker. The best way to get a pair together is to buy a group of young unrelated fish of the same color type. Then let nature take its course and let them find their own mate. This generally happens when they are about half grown. Spawning then usually happens when they are about three quarter size. If they pair up know, they probably will be life partners.

Discus Tanks

It's best to keep the breeding tanks simple with simple air powered filtration. Discuss will choose a near vertical smooth site for their spawning, so provide something appropriate (terracotta cones, broad leafed plants or slate) The water needs to be very soft so the eggs can develop properly, and its quality needs to be excellent with a temperature of 84 - 88F.

Discus Feeding and Conditioning

The parents will need a good and varied diet to condition them to spawn and then to provide nutrition when they are feeding their fry. Large water changes, a temperature rise and heavy feeding is often a good spawning trigger.

Baby Discus Rearing

It's a good idea to give the fry additional feedings of small foods such as (BBS) baby brine shrimp while they are with their parents. After about 3-6 weeks the parents will be exhausted and the fry will be growing fast. At this time its a good idea to remove them to another tank, but it is now important to have lots of tank and water changes in order to allow them to grow at a decent growth rate.
