Why this is here...

When starting a character on the Discworld MUD, I encountered a number of ailments - small problems that I wanted to know how to solve. There are lots of pages out there, but nothing like this.

Newbie problems

Q: I don't know what this is!
A: It's a list of problems encountered on the Discworld MUD (conveniently located at http://discworld.atuin.net/lpc/playing/getting_started.html)

Q: I am lost!
A: first, set your options to show a map by typing "options output map look = left" and "options output map lookcity = left". This will show you a mini-map of the area in most cases. Doing this will help you get more of the picture.

Q: I am in the dark and cannot see!
A: Ideally, don't do that. There are torches you can get and carry. Also, a yellow stone ring (available in a player shop 2W,N from the Mended Drum in Ankh-Morpork) will light your way, at the cost of a few guildpoints, but without occupying a hand.

Q: My yellow stone ring's light went out!
A: "Remove yellow stone ring" then "wear yellow stone ring" to take it off and put it back on again. That will re-start the light.

Q: I can't kill anything.
A: Did you practice in the newbie area until all your combat skills were at least 5? That will help a little.

Q: No, really, I can't kill anything.
A: Well, rats and cockroaches are easy targets. If you "search" around you will find various items, which you can wear, wield, or sell.

Q: I want really cool gear!
A: Well, really cool weapons are harder to use, requiring lots of skill to wield. Most of the custom weapons and armor require TONS of available cash, and some require extra language skills to obtain.

Q: Can I make it so I automatically flee when my hit points are low?
A: "wimpy 30" to wimp out at 30% of your full health or lower.

Q: I have fleas.
A: Buy a flea tablet from the apothecary, which is in northern Ankh-Morpork. It will give you garlic breath, which will wear off in a few minutes.

Q: How do I see my stats?
A: "score stats"

Q: Uh, all my stats are 13.
A: Yes, they start that way until you "rearrange" - which you should NOT do without playing a while and talking with several players to get advice.

Q: I want more hit points.
A: Train the skill "other.health"

Q: Train?
A: If you're in a guild, you can type "cost all" to see a list of the skills you can advance. Type "advance fi.me.sw" to advance the fighting.melee.sword skill by one, for instance. This costs you xp and money, so you will need both.

Q: Everybody tells me to advance skills but when I type them in, I get a message about not being advanced enough!
A: Okay, advance the outer skill ring to 5, and you can see the second 'layer' of skills. Advance this second layer to 10, and you'll see the third layer. Nifty, eh?

Q: How do I get xp if I can't kill anything?
A: Using the "search" command gets you xp as well. In fact, any command that uses guild points earns you xp.

Q: Sweet, I can just say "search" over and over!
A: Well, you won't get as much xp for the second or third time. It's diminishing returns. Try varying commands once you get them.

Q: Uh, how do I get the commands then, smart guy?
A: If you're an adventurer, use your talker or the newbie channel to ask someone to teach you the command. If you're a guild member, there is an NPC in your guild who gives commands, or you can use the talker or newbie channel to ask for someone to help.

Q: Newbie channel?
A: If you type "newbie hi everyone" then all the newbie characters (less than 18 hours old) and the liasons (people who help newbies) will see 'So-and-so says "Hi everyone".

Q: Sweet, I can just beg for anything!
A: Uh, speak politely and type in real English, please. Also, if you're a jerk, you can be ignored.

Q: How do I change my money?
A: At a money-changer's shop.
