Ideas for a Disney Princess Birthday Party

Planning a birthday party for your daughter?  Does she like Disney Princesses?

Belle, Ariel, Cinderella, Aurora, Jasmine, or Snow White - no matter which Princess is your child's favorite you will find this is the place to help you plan the perfect princess party. (How's that for alliteration? Ha!)

For my daughter's 5th birthday she chose to have a Belle themed party. All of the things we did can be used with any Disney Princess theme, an individual princess or the whole group. You can use my ideas or maybe you'll get inspired to come up with ideas of your own. Feel free to share them in the comments section at the end of this lens :)

On to the planning!

It's Time to Start

Weeks before the party the first thing that I buy are the Invitations & Thank You notes. I hold off on the party supplies until I have a good idea of how many people will be coming. I always have my daughter pick them out. I get the thank yous early because I'm worried they will be sold out after the party and I really like them to match, but you might not be as crazy as me. ;) I include a phone number & email address for people to RSVP. Let them choose which is easiest and they are more apt to comply.

Let's get shopping!

Party supplies

A few weeks before the party I make the big shopping trip to buy all of the party supplies. You should have your menu in mind so you know which items you will need and which you really don't. When you are looking at all of the cute theme items it's easy to just buy everything, so plan it out before you go. Also if possible having a head count helps too. Keep all of your receipts till after the party so you can return unused packages.

Supplies to think about: dinner plates, desert plates, bowls, cups, luncheon napkins, beverage napkins, table cloths, forks, spoons, knives, goodie bags, balloons, banners, streamers and don't forget a piñata! If you are on a roll add to that list any items for the cake you are planning on including; candles, cake toppers, and a specialty cake pan if you need one.

To save on cost we usually buy non-themed items for the adults who will be at the party. I pick two colors to match the theme and head over to the generic aisle of the party store.

Party Packs

Disney Princess Fairy-Tale Friends Basic Pack

Disney Princess Fairy-Tale Friends

Basic Pack $19.99
Deluxe Pack $30.99
Ultimate Party Pack $189.99

Balloons & other Decorations

I love balloons and my daughter loves them even more. Each year I pick 5 different color latex balloons and a couple mylar theme balloons. We tie them up in multi-colored bunches around the party location and save one of the special balloons for the chair of the birthday girl. With the Belle theme that she chose last year we had 2 Princess, 3 pink, 3 rose, 3 lavender, 3 green, and 3 yellow balloons.

I usually order the balloons ahead of time from a local shop and have someone pick them up the morning of the party. Latex balloons filled with helium only last about 12 hours.

As for other decorations we usually get a Happy Birthday banner, some hanging decorations, 1 theme streamer and 2 solid color ones to match.

Planning a Disney Princess Birthday Party - A phone call from a Princess!

A special phone call from her favorite Disney Princess!

I think this was my daughter's favorite part of her birthday.

With Disney Enchanted Calls you can schedule a phone call from the Princess of your choice: Ariel, Mulan, Cinderella, Snow White, Jasmine, Aurora, Belle, or Pocahontas. She will call on the day and time you select and have a personalized birthday greeting for your child.

Set this up ahead of time so it can be done on or right before her birthday. I would do it when you know your house will be quiet because you can't have the message repeated so you don't want her to miss it.

My daughter had this call the night of her birthday and her party was a few days later. You can see her reaction in the video below. Priceless.

A call from Belle

Look at her face!

This was Belle's message for my daughter.

Bonjour, I'm Belle.

One of my friends in the castle told me you're turning five
So I wanted to wish you "Happy Birthday!"

Don't you think birthdays are exciting? Especially when you get to be as grown up as you are now. Do you know what I wished for on my last birthday? If you guessed a book, you're right! Oh, I wish I could be there to celebrate with you and maybe try a piece of your birthday cake.

I heard that cake with ice cream is your favorite.
Mmm - I like that too!

Well, have a wonderful celebration! We'll be thinking about you here at the castle!

Goodbye!

Planning a Disney Princess Birthday Party - Cake!

Let them eat cake!

I had been making my daughter's birthday cakes for the past few years and I wasn't sure what to do for the Belle theme. I've never taken a class or been taught any cake making tips so I'm pretty limited in my decorating abilities. I knew I wouldn't be up for the challenge of decorating a Belle cake. I asked around for ideas and someone showed me this one on Better Homes and Gardens' website. I used to link directly to their recipe for you, but they have since removed it. Luckily I had a copy saved.

Equipment & Additional Ingredients

2 8-x-8-x-2-inch baking pans
2 6-x-1-1/2-inch round baking pans
1 Cupcake pan with 2-1/2-inch cups
1 6-inch cardboard cake circle

Foil bake cups
Foil and blue plastic wrap (optional for moat)
8 plastic drinking straws

Paste food coloring (purple, pink and yellow)
Fruit-flavored candy corn
2 white chocolate candy bars
Small gumdrops
5 pointed ice-cream cones (sugar cones)
Pull-apart string licorice

16 inches square metal tray for cake

ribbon
toothpicks
clear tape (for flag)

Directions

1. Grease and flour baking pans; line muffin cups with bake cups. Prepare 1 recipe cake batter (see White Cake recipe below); divide evenly between prepared square pans. Bake in 350 degrees F oven about 30 minutes or until a wooden toothpick inserted near centers comes out clean. Prepare second recipe white cake batter; fill prepared round pans and muffin cups half full. (You need 5 cupcakes for the castle cake. You will have enough batter to make a few extra cupcakes.) Bake in a 350-degree F oven about 20 minutes for cupcakes and about 30 minutes for round cakes, or until a wooden toothpick comes out clean. Cool in pans on wire racks 10 minutes; remove from pans. Cool cakes and cupcakes.

2. Prepare Creamy White Frosting as directed (see Creamy White Frosting recipe below). Tint about 4 cups frosting purple, 1/2 cup frosting green, 1/2 cup frosting orange, and 1/2 cup frosting yellow. (You should have about 1 cup white frosting remaining.) For square cake, spread about 1/2 cup white frosting on top of 1 square layer; top with other square layer. For round cake, spread remaining white frosting on 1 round layer; top with remaining round layer. Place about 1 cup of the purple frosting in a decorating bag that has been fitted with coupler; set aside. Place each of the other colored frostings in decorating bags fitted with a coupler.

3. To assemble, place square cake on the cutting board. If desired, make a moat around cake with foil and plastic wrap. Place round cake on cardboard cake circle. Cut 8 drinking straws to same height as square cake. Insert 4 of the straws near middle of square cake. Insert the remaining 4 straws on the outside corners of the square cake. (Straws add support for top of cake and cupcakes.) Place round cake on top of square cake, centering on bottom cake and resting cake circle on straws. Frost both round and square cakes by spreading with remaining purple frosting.

4. To decorate, fit decorating bag filled with purple frosting with medium star tip; pipe swirls around edge of 5 cupcakes, top edge of round cake, and top edge of square cake. Gently press candy corn, points up, into frosting swirls on round and square cakes, leaving space on corners of square cake for cupcakes to stand. Using more purple frosting, attach pieces of white candy bar to castle for door and windows. Pipe another row of frosting around base of square cake; press gumdrops into frosting.

5. To finish cupcakes, press an ice-cream cone, point up, into the frosting piped on each cupcake. Fit decorating bags filled with green, orange, and yellow frosting with small round or star tips; pipe windows and other designs onto cones. Use ribbon, toothpicks, and tape to make flags. Attach flags to points of cones using a little frosting. Place 4 cupcakes on corners of square cake and 1 cupcake on top of round cake. (If desired, decorate any remaining cupcakes for additional servings.)

6. If desired, make trees by decorating additional cones; arrange around castle. For drawbridge, position large piece of white candy bar over moat; arrange gumdrops around moat. Attach string licorice to drawbridge with some piped frosting. To serve, remove straws as needed when cutting cake.

A Castle Cake

This was the cake I made for my daughter.

I loved the idea of a Castle Cake so I decided to give it a shot. It looks easier than it is but I didn't realize that until I was assembling all of the pieces so I couldn't turn back. Thank goodness for my husband's help because I needed more than one set of hands. If you are a seasoned cake maker, or if you aren't a perfectionist like myself you should give it a shot though. Even though it didn't turn out like the sample image it was a BIG hit with my daughter and all of her friends.

My small tips for it would be use more straws than they suggested for supports, and you may have to trim the cake circle a bit. Oh, and instead of their colors choose colors to match the theme.

If you aren't up for the Castle but still want to go the homemade route you can buy cute Disney Princess cake toppers or edible images to place on top, or you can buy a themed cake pan. Of course to save time and energy you can find Disney decorated cakes at your local bakery.

Make your own Fruit Parfaits

Fruit parfaits are a really simple treat that look great and taste even better. I think it's something that a princess would love to eat, don't you?

What you'll need:

Strawberries
Blueberries
Raspberries

Vanilla yogurt
Whipped cream
Granola cereal

Clear plastic cups
Spoons
Serving spoons
Serving bowls
Ice

Wash and cut up the berries and set them each out in their own bowl. You can put the dairy containers in their own bowls full of ice to keep them cool. Set out the plastic cups and spoons and have your guests create their own parfait with as many ingredients and layers as they'd like.

I like to start off with one layer of strawberries, a layer with whipped cream, then blueberries, more whipped cream, raspberries, more whipped cream and topped with granola. Yogurt can be used in place of whipped cream. There's no wrong way to make a parfait. ;)

Planning a Disney Princess Birthday Party - Crafts!

Fun Crafts

Occupied kids are happy kids!

We usually get the party crafts through Oriental Tradingicon. They have a large assortment of affordable arts & craft supplies. Just type "princess" in the search field and scroll through to see what they have to offer.

For our Princess party we chose two craft ideas. Sand art and foam magnets.

Sand Art with Castle Shaped Bottles

Each package comes with 12 castle bottlesicon and one small funnel. You may want to pick up a few extra funnels so more than one child can work on this activity at a time. These bottles are 2" - 2 1/2" so they are really tiny. They were smaller than I pictured in my head once I got the package at home, but the kids had fun making them. Who doesn't love sand art?

The sand is easier to find at a craft store than the assortment of bottles so you may be able to find a good deal locally, but Oriental Trading has plenty to choose from too, like this set of 8 colors of Rainbow craft sandicon.

Princess themed Magnets

This princess magneticon craft kit comes with all of the parts to make 12 magnets. There are 4 magic wands, 4 crowns, and 4 party slippers. Each child can pick out which magnet they want to make, or if you get enough they can each make all three styles.

This kit does not come with glue so make sure to buy a few small bottles of craft glueicon.

Coloring Disney Princesses

The Disney website has some great princess printouts. There are coloring sheets, bookmarks, door hangers, mobiles, greeting cards. Just click on the princess you want and choose the Activities link. I really like the coloring sheets and we keep a bunch on hand at the party. They are really great to have especially if there are some little siblings who show up unexpectedly.

Make sure to have enough crayons out for everyone.
I like Crayola Twistables Crayonsicon because they don't need to be sharpened.

Planning a Disney Princess Birthday Party - Activities!

Activities

Have a Scavenger Hunt with each girl finding her own jewelry surprise.

We hid little organza pouches around the yard, one for each child. They all went off looking for a pouch with their names attached to it. Inside they found a a few beaded bracelets and a ring. You can have clues for each of the girls to find a bag one at a time, but we just let them roam free. I made a little map of where I had hid the pouches incase someone had trouble finding theirs.

Instead of Pin the Tail on the Donkey, you can have them play Pin the Crown on the Princess.

And a crowd favorite- a Princess Piñata. There are pull string piñatas, which I prefer, or the traditional ones. I usually use the theme's goodie bags as loot bags. The guests have made crafts to bring home and have the surprises from the scavenger hunt, so I just put some cute Disney Princess stickers in each bag and hand them out for them to put their piñata candy in.
