Disney's Pinocchio

A tribute to the 1941 film Pinocchio

Were you like me and watched this so many times you could recite the lines as a kid? Pinocchio is what some consider the pinnacle of Disney animation. Its also their 2nd full length animated movie.

Indeed this is the one Disney movie that made the most impact on me, with colorful characters, timeless music and a solid plot. It showed not just one, but several very important lessons to learn as we follow the innocent Pinocchio and how he gets bombarded by life's troubles from day 1.

Pinocchio

The main character

Pinocchio

Originally I guess he was supposed to be a wise-cracking, sarcastic hoodlum, but they luckily changed him before the release. Now he's an innocent character who you really want to see succeed. Although not a real boy, he's still riddled with the same inclinations as other boys to get into mischief and make bad decisions. But he has a good heart, and thats why I think the Blue Fairy is so nice to him, because he's honestly trying to get along in the world. He just needed to learn that the easy way isn't always the best way.

Jiminy Cricket

The conscience

Jiminy Cricket

This little guy is one of the most famous Disney icons to date. Acting as Pinocchio's guide to whats right and wrong, he's a charismatic sidekick, and a pretty decent singer too. He seems like he'd been around the block before the movie starts, and chose the simple, happy life. Although generally optimistic, he gets frustrated with Pinocchio's inability to listen a couple of times. But in the end Jiminy was always loyal and came back to help when Pinnochio needed him the most.

Geppetto

The Toymaker

Geppetto

Gepetto's the humble toymaker who is a master at his woodworking craft. He's about as honest, selfless and gentle as you can get. He also seems dedicated to his work, living alone with no family. We never see him interact with any customers, but he seems like someone you could be very comfortable talking to. It breaks his heart when Pinocchio gets lost, as he sails out to sea to try to find him. I wonder if he had any family in the past?

Figaro and Cleo

Pleasant Pets

Figaro and Cleo

These two are the ones that kept Gepetto company before Pinocchio comes to life. Loyal pets to the toy maker, they are actually pretty kind to each other as well. Figaro is understandably suspicious of Pinocchio at first, but warms up to him pretty fast. They're cute and a nice addition to cast. I love how they get washed up to shore after Monstro's attack, and Cleo's fishbowl rides the tide almost in perfect condition.

The Blue Fairy

a little magic

The Blue Fairy Pinocchio

The Blue Fairy is the one who answers Geppetto's wish and starts the ball rolling by granting Pinocchio life. She helps Pinocchio by setting him free from Stromboli and informing him where Geppetto was trapped. Being the only female presence in the movie, she's drawn a bit more realistic giving her a unique presence on screen. She provides a necessary balance to the dark villains that Pinocchio encounters.

J. Worthington Foulfellow

and sidekick Gideon

Honest John Worthington Foulfellow Pinocchio

This is the 1st villain that Pinocchio unfortunately runs into. He and his sidekick Gideon are the only animal characters in the movie, but everyone treats them the same as humans. They are con men, humorously drawn but greedy and selfish.

It would be quite normal to see a duo like them be the main rivals (like Dr.Terminus in Pete's Dragon). However, their role is to merely deliver Pinocchio to the other villains, who make these two rascals look downright angelic.

The Trickster Con Man

Foulfellow at work

"Honest" John is one of the more amusing characters in the movie. Although he's devious and up to no good, he isn't as sinister as the rest of the villains. I found that his routines reminded me heavily of Warner Brothers cartoon characters. His sidekick Gideon is even voiced by Mel Blanc (although they took out the majority of his lines).

Stromboli

insane puppeteer

Stromboli

Stromboli is the 2nd villainous character that Pinocchio has the displeasure of encountering. He seemed like a nice businessman helping Pinocchio become an actor, but then had no shame in revealing his greedy and sinister nature as soon as Pinocchio wants to go home. Stromboli locked Pinocchio up in a birdcage and planned to use him as a slave. Good thing he managed to escape.

Good ol' Stromboli

The anger rises

I can understand why kids are scared of this guy. He's exaggerated, but realistic enough to reflect some really angry parent or uncle. Its disturbing how he was so nice in the beginning then pulls a 180 on Pinocchio. I created this video to make him seem more comical/less threatening.

The Coachman

Wicked to the core

The coachman

Talk about creepy, the "Coachman" is that and more. He kidnaps kids and gives them everything they want, only to take their humanity away and sell them as donkeys. He's another horrible villain that won't stop at anything to make a gold coin. Its too bad he isn't brought to justice in the film, but his crimes will no doubt catch up with him.

Mirror mirror on the wall ....

who's the scariest one of all?

There's plenty of unsettling images in Pinocchio... just wanted to know you thought the worst was. (I don't think many people would think Foulfellow as scary).

Monstro

Irate kujira

Monstro

Monstro is the 4th villain that Pinocchio has to deal with, this time being a curiously irate force of nature. This whale has a mean streak, maybe since he has an inflated ego, being the biggest, baddest mammal of the sea. He swallows Geppeto, which gives Pinocchio a chance to prove his courage by rescuing him. Monstro almost gets them both after they escape his mouth, but he crashes into the cliffside instead.

You got this far ...
