It's an amazing set of numbers. The U.S. Department of Labor states that by the end of 2010 - this year - there will be one million new nursing job openings. What makes this number frightening is the American Hospital Association reported 126,000 positions were unfulfilled in 2005. If that isn't enough, the DoL expects the total shortage to top 1 million by 2016.

From nurses who perform home health care to those who perform life-saving actions in any emergency room in the country, the profession of nursing has a great variety of different levels of skill for those with an accredited degree. The government has recognized the lack of needed numbers of nurses to meet a growing demand and responded with an online nursing job bank site. Attached to this program is a $10 million financial aid package that should provide incentive for those who are considering this career field.

Those With Advanced Degrees Can Be Nurse Practitioners

To meet this demand, more and more students are taking online nursing university classes. These courses over the Internet are offered by schools to meet all degree needs in the nursing field. Adding their own financial aid to the general college aid available are a number of the nursing schools and other medical societies.

Nursing has grown considerably from the days of Florence Nightingale. They work with much more than just a thermometer, lamp and stoic attitude. A solid knowledge of math and technology has become a must these days. Their work arenas have expanded way beyond the hospital and doctor's office, too. These days, many provide at-home long term/homebound care. The most ambitious have set up their own offices, providing lower cost health alternatives as nurse practitioners.

Retirement Leaving Nursing Openings And Higher Demand

U.S. population-wise, the "baby boomers" are a huge demographic. Quite a few are already retirement age and there are millions to follow. Some nurses will choose to advance their careers with a Doctor of Nursing degree that would enable them to work in clinical research and advanced clinical practice and health administration. Others will pursue a Masters of Science in Nursing where they can specialize in a particular field, with a commensurate raise in salary. Those just entering school can start with a two year program and advance to a four year Bachelor of Science. There are also more general nursing diplomas for medical billing and physical therapists and the like. Schools with distance learning course programs are meeting all these degree needs and some even offer accelerated nursing programs.
