The diving in Fiji is the best in the world

The diving in Fiji is the best in the world. Yep, I'll admit that's a pretty big call, but if you've ever been diving in Fiji you'll have to agree with me.

In particular, the best diving in Fiji is in Savusavu Bay which offers the most brilliant display of coral and the largest variety of fish of anywhere in the world.

Savusavu Bay is also famous for Jean-Michel Cousteau, son of Jacques, who owns a five-star resort on the Fijian island of Vanua Levu. His dive schools have access to Shark Alley and Big Blue, some of the world's most enviable dive sites.

Here I will tell you a bit about my own favorite dive sites in Fiji, as well as a beautiful little budget resort that is in the perfect spot for the best diving in Fiji.

Namena Marine Reserve

If you are lucky enough to get a day out at Namena Marine Reserve, you are guaranteed an unforgettable experience. In this underwater wilderness there are so many fish it's a wonder you don't actually bump into them in the water. There is an enormous array of Gorgonian fans, soft corals, Bubble corals and many more that I cannot name, in every colour imaginable.

Whether the micro world of nudibranchs and miniature shrimps is your thing or you prefer the big critters - Hammerhead sharks and Manta rays - diving in Savusavu Bay has something for everyone. Towers of corals, pretty swim throughs and beautiful coral walls that drop away to infinity - this place has it all.

Even the names of the dive site are enticing - Alice in Wonderland, Mystery Reef, Grand Central Station. All of these have those secret favourite resting places for the sharks, the sandy bottoms where the Sting rays hide out and only their eyes can be seen, and the coral overhangs where turtles might swim past.

Back on top of the reef it's a riot of colours. Anemones form homes for all the variety of clown fish and psychedelic Christmas tree worms pop in and out of their holes.

Where to stay

Of course, if you're completely loaded and your Fiji holiday is all about five stars, then the Cousteau resort is probably the place for you. The Cousteau resort is on Vanua Levu, and the Cousteau launch is called L'Aventure - and the Cousteau team will take you diving in Shark Alley and the Big Blue which are totally amazing.

BUT... if your own diving in Fiji budget doesn't stretch to the five-stars of the Cousteau resort, consider staying in a more traditional style resort nearby. Daku Resort offers comfortable traditional style accommodation and offers incredible 'dive Fiji' opportunities at neighboring Cousteau Resort. Yep. Stay in a budget resort but go diving with the Cousteau team. What could be better?

Actually, go and visit Daku Resort's webpage now and check out the dive offer they have going for November/December 08. If I hadn't already spent my diving in Fiji budget for the year, I'd be there now! :)

Split Rock

Split Rock is 150 metres off shore; a large coral head, it is named for the distinctive split down one side. At the bottom of the split you can see purple gorgonian fans and pale yellow soft corals. At the entrance to the split a fierce clown fish defends her anemone and the male takes refuge in its fronds.

There's a large school of inquisitive black and white sergeant fish nearby; they will come right up to you and often give your fingers a gentle nip. There is a glorious abundance of orange and purple anthias and golden damsels near the surface; a little deeper, parrotfish can be seen nibbling away at the coral, and a large brown spotted grouper glides shyly away. There are two large clams on the rock, and several small green fern corals.

Split Rock is one of the most colourful and enchanting sites of the bay, and endlessly fascinating in visit after visit.

The top of the coral head is 3 foot deep, and the base is about 30 foot deep. You can get there either from the beach - it's about 150 metres off shore - although you will need to be shown exactly where it is so either get a taxi driver to show you (they all know) or take a member of staff to show you. Alternatively, go by boat - approx 10 mins from Daku Resort.

The Lighthouse

Further out towards the edge of the bay stands a lighthouse, warning ships and yachts of the edge of the reef. This site is named for the lighthouse, and offers an extraordinary growth of plate corals shimmering in the water. There are also soft spaghetti corals with their tentacles swaying in the currents, and you may see a trumpet fish going by, confusing you with the appearance of a face at its tail. Pale green damsel fish hover around coral growths, darting back into its forest to hide when you first approach but soon relaxing and coming back out. There are also humbacked wrasse and maori wrasse, and, if you are very lucky, a turtle.

The top of the coral head is 15 foot deep, and the base is about 120 foot deep. We get to the rock by boat - approx 35 mins from Daku Resort.
