What Makes People Think They Can Touch My Belly?

Ranked #2,480 in Parenting & Kids, #80,905 overall

All Hands On Baby

Everyone wants to touch the baby, especially during the pregnancy but people rarely ask. The minute a pregnant women starts to show a tummy everyone will be drawn to that belly like a moth to a flame. The tummy becomes this magnet for hands and everyone wants to handle it. It doesn't matter if you are walking around in a store, sitting down in a restaurant or walking on your own street, someone is bound to be drawn to it.

There are definitely two opposing feelings, pregnant women either don't mind others touching their belly or they are so averse to it that they want to strike out at the person.

People Seem To Be Unable To Help Themselves.

They are simply drawn to That Baby

Think About The Husband Too

He may be feeling left out at these times

The pregnant woman is certainly not the only one being driven nuts by this, what about the poor husband. He may try to act like a trooper but deep inside (or maybe not so deep) he's probably ready to put someone's lights out. It might be a good idea to talk with your husband and see how he feels. Even if the woman doesn't mind, the husband might not like other men's hands on his wife. He may feel less possessive if it is a woman touching his wife's belly. How would the women feel if she saw some other women rubbing her hands all over her husband's chest. Talking about it in advance can really waylay some difficult moments. And after all, is it written, that everyone should be allowed to touch a pregnant belly?

Children May Also Be Curious To Touch The Baby

There's is an innocent curiosity

Your belly, clothed or not is a personal space, sure there is someone intruding inside you but that person in welcome. But to actually touch someone else's belly one should ask before they do it and respect your answer. If you don't want them to touch it, tell them. While some women don't mind all the attention, there are other women that don't want their belly's touched, let alone having the whole world watching. Maybe they've gained 10 pounds and feel self-conscious enough about it, or maybe they are a very private person.

Children may also want to touch the belly, normally it is because they know someone that has had a baby and they were able to do it. If the pregnant mother doesn't like this she should let them know. If the person doesn't mind, she may want to place their hand on her belly. Children tend to get excited and actually smack the belly when they are trying to reach for it, so be prepared.

Let 'em touch, They don't mean any harm

BSieracki says:

only if the person asks and you wouldn't mind shaking hands with them.

ColorPetGifts says:

Ahh .. in the whole scheme of things, nine months is such a short period of time; I was always happy when folks were drawn to the baby inside .. pregnancy is a miracle to be shared :)

mulberry says:

I was never pregnant so I'm not sure. I THINK I would be ok with it unless they lifted my shirt. Lifting the shirt would definitely elicit a different response.

LissaKlar says:

I didn't mind unless I was cranky, annoyed or didn't like the person...other than that, I'm ok with it. Sounds like a lot of conditions, but, really, mostly I didn't mind.

laura croy says:

it's an amazingly beautiful special time in a womans life thet only lasts such a short space of time that i wish it would happen for a 3rd time for me and the whole world could rub my baby belly if they wanted!

birth_announcement says:

when i was pregnant i realy didnt care , iguess it dipends who it is...

chefkeem says:

Some people touch my belly all the time, and I'm not even pregnant! I believe it has to do with my love for ice cream. (The belly - not the touching.)

debnet says:

I never had a problem with it. I enjoyed all the attention when I was pregnant...so much, I did it 3 times! I think everyone asked me first though.

WendyKrick says:

People touched my belly without asking when I was pregnant and I didn't mind. I enjoyed their excitement for me. It think it is peoples way of expressing that they care.

Jewelsofawe says:

I did not care, but not really

You touch me, you'll lose your arm.

gypsyman27 says:

If I were a pregnant female I don't think I would like strangers touching my stomach. I certainly have no desire to touch the belly of a pregnant stranger. See you around the galaxy...

clouda9 says:

Ya know during my 1st pregnancy I'd practically ask people to touch the "baby bump". During my 2nd pregnancy, yep...I'd break your arm (lol, sorta!).

Tipi says:

Touching is personal, and so are baby bumps.

No one would lose their arm, but that's personal.

DaleK says:

That always annoyed me to no end!!!

tandemonimom says:

I don't like being touched on the arm by strangers when I'm NOT pregnant; why would I want them touching my tummy when I am? Ask and you'll probably get permission. Otherwise, hands off the baby bump!

Jimmie says:

It's inappropriate except in very close relationships.

Mortira says:

Only one person ever actually tried to touch my belly, but because it was a customer at work, I couldn't smack them like I wanted to.

NO! Don't Poke the Belly

...And I'm not going to tell you again!

Now forget about rubbing and touching the pregnant belly for a minute. Pregnant women really need to be aware of the person that likes to poke or jab at the belly. This can really hurt and be very annoying. It can cause bruising and be really irritating for the mom. Most of the time the person is not even aware that they have done something wrong, let alone painful for you. Try to explain to them as gently as possible but also firmly. Explaining that it hurts and they should not do this. This may save the next person the pain and irritation.

Do Not Touch

If They Just Won't Listen...Start Swatting

You asked for it!

If a pregnant women has tried to be polite and has firmly given her objections and explained that her belly is off limits, but it still doesn't work, then feel free to start swatting. Maybe even sick the husband onto them to get them to stop. They did have fair warning.

And there should be no hard feelings if it becomes necessary to smack a person that has lifted your shirt, right in front of everyone. This would be a normal reaction, besides they should have known better. They would never do such a thing if a pregnant belly wasn't involved.

Those shirts make me want to get pregnant just so I can wear one!!!! You are a baby pusher!! ;)

There were a few women I worked with who when I would push their hands away and get irritated when they kept touching, me would just write it off as me being cranky from the hormones! I always thought there was something wrong with me because I didn't like being touched!

Great lens! I was fortunate in NOT having too many people try to touch me ... I think I must exude a "noli me tangere" air (plus, my hubby's a big, scary-looking dude, LOL). I never minded if people asked but WOW I hate to be touched without warning and by strangers!
