Dog Barking Problems and How To Solve Them

Discovering why your dog is barking and how to stop your dog from barking can be both a difficult and time-consuming task. Not all barking dogs should be seen as having dog barking problems.

Dogs, on the whole, love to bark and it is perfectly natural for them to do so. It's as normal for them to bark as it is for you and I to speak - it's how we communicate.

Dog barking problems exist when your dog barks excessively, to the point that it is annoying to you, and possibly your neighbours. With this is mind, the aim here isn't to stop your dog barking altogether, but to stop it barking excessively or at inappropriate times.

Find Out Why Your Dog is Barking

You need to identify the cause

There are times when we do actually want our dog to bark, whether it is to alert us to some possible danger, because it is in pain or for any other reason, which you are able to recognise is actually valid, from the dog's point of view.

When your dog just keeps barking, on and on, and for no obviously apparent reason, is the time that you need to really get to the route of the problem, and this can take a little while to determine. But changing dog behaviour is not going to be an overnight thing.

Once you have identified the cause or whatever is triggering the barking, you can then plan the correct training to stop your dog barking problems.

Reasons Why You May Have Dog Barking Problems

Any one, or more, of these could be reason your dog barks

- To express their needs (are they being bossy?).
- Some breeds of dog are bred to bark.
- They are letting others know they are getting close to their territory, and warning them off.
- To warn others (you and your family) of impending danger.
- Barking at other dogs or animals.
- They feel isolated and alone.
- Because they feel trapped.
- Just for the fun of it.
- Because they have been, inadvertently, rewarded in the past for barking.
- Because they are bored, or need some exercise.Through boredom or a lack of physical and mental stimulation.
- They may be in pain, or feel stressed.

How Do You Stop Your Dog Barking Excessively?

Consistency is of paramount important

Once you have determined the reason for your dog's barking, you then need to work out how you are going to deal with the problem.

The most important thing to remember here is that clear communication to your dog about what is acceptable and what is not, is vital. Givng your dog mixed messages, because of inconsistent training, can actually help reinforce your dog's barking problem.

Don't Reward Your Dog for Excessive or Inappropriate Barking

Do you do any of the following?

Many dog owners are rewarding their dog for barking excessively, or inappropriately, without even realising they are doing it. It is easy to see why when you consider the following scenarious.

Do you yell and scream at the dog to stop barking? If so, this just gives them the attention they were craving, albeit negative attention. Your dog will hear your shouting as barking, and will most probably think you are just joining in, which all adds to the excitement!

If your dog is outside and barking his little head off, do you let him inside? Does he bark to tell you he wants his tea, so you get up and prepare it for him? By responding to this type of barking and doing what the dog is telling you to do, you are reinforcing this type of barking and he will continue to think it is a perfectly acceptable way to behave.

If your dog is barking excessively and you respond by giving him a cuddle or maybe a treat, you are telling him that you are happy with him. You need to make it clear to him that his excessive barking is not appropriate and you won't tolerate it.
