Who am I?

I have been living with dogs for 31 years now. My background began as a child with parents that showed dogs, and I have been working with and training dogs ever since. Now you can find me passionately working with dogs both professionally and as a hobby. There's nothing like competing with your best furry buddy for a hobby!

All dogs are intelligent. Sometimes it is the people that have the problems! : ) Once you know how to work with a dog and what make its tick, you can teach it anything.

I love all dogs, but I especially love the German Shepherd Dog. It is one of the most intelligent, fabulous, and loyal breeds around. I hope to share stories of my own dogs and those I have trained throughout these pages, so please check it all out!

Life is all about training....don't ya think?

Dogs are just like people and everything else alive: we all have to be 'trained' in whatever we do. Artists aren't born knowing how to paint. Pilots have to be taught how to fly a plane. It's the same with dogs. They have to be trained in order to know how to live within the human world.

If you don't train your dog, your dog will train you.

That being said, the world is full of myths about dog training. The super-duper 'dominance' is over-rated. Yes, dogs live in packs. Yes, there should be a leader. Yes, it should be you. BUT ....you do not need to ear pinch, alpha roll, yell at, or punish your dog to be a leader. In fact, you will gain more respect and become a leader your dog will want to follow if you set up fair and consistent rules for your dog, provide it with early and on-going training, and consistently exercise and work with your dog.

No dog will simply learn what you expect from it without you telling it. If a puppy bites when young, it will still bite as an adult if someone doesn't tell him why he shouldn't. He won't just grow out of it.

Life is all about training, and motivation should be the #1 factor. Motivation is key for all of us! Figure out what motivates your dog, and training him is so simple it's ridiculous. All dogs want something; it's up to you to figure out what it is and how to use it.

When something goes wrong in dog training, 90% + of the time it has something to do with the person and not the dog. Always look at what your influence is in a situation. Our actions positively or negatively affect our dogs.

How to fix any problem: simple: identify the problem, look at contributing factors, and then develop a plan that addresses the whole situation consistently. For example, if you have a dog that barks, don't just focus on how to stop the barking. Instead, look at when he barks and why he might be doing it. This information tells us a lot about the WHOLE situation, and then we can work to create a solution.

I'd love for you to add comments about this or anything else. Suggest ideas for more subjects you'd like to see, and I will keep adding pages on the never-ending but always interesting subject of dog training.

Suggested Top Dog Foods and Treats

Wondering what kind of food to feed or treats to give?

Your Best Dog suggests either Canidae or Wellness Brand Dog Foods. You can't go wrong with either one, and this what my dogs eat too!

Ziwi Peak makes an EXCELLENT treat the dogs love. Buy the food (not the actual treats). It stores a long time and is just like jerky. You can refrigerate or freeze it too, and the dogs love it.

Check out the Evo and the liver treats too. Treat variety works well when training.
