About the It's PAWsible! Dog Training and Puppy Training DVD

Got a new puppy who's absolutely adorable but bites, chews, and runs away from you when called? Or an older dog who's like Marley from the movie "Marley and Me?"

You and your puppy may have attended a training class, but the obedience commands were never reinforced. Now's your chance to turn around some of your dog's undesirable behaviors with do-it-yourself dog training.

Do-It-Yourself Dog Training
Nope, you may not be an expert dog trainer, but you certainly can learn from an expert.

How? The It's Pawsible! Dog Training and Puppy Training DVD by Beth Ostrowski-Parks will certainly lead you and your dog to a more disciplined and peaceful co-existence.

What's in the DVD?
The It's PAWsible! DVD is a 5-week training program with a set of commands you spend a few minutes reinforcing each day. Each week you build on the commands from the previous week.

These easy-to-teach commands are demonstrated - Sit, Down, and Heel. The DVD walks you and your dog through these basic commands as well as the more difficult and possibly the most important ones - Come (Recall), Leave It, and the real killer - STAY! Leash training, also a tricky activity to master, is covered in the DVD.

In the It's PAWsible! DVD, the Certified Professional Dog Trainer Beth Ostrowski-Parks discusses how to use the DVD, demonstrates the commands several times with different dogs, and gives key tips to remember as you teach your dog. You can get more information about Beth online by searching for her name or the DVD title.

The Positives and (sorta) Negative
In the next module, the positive aspects of the DVD are discussed. The last module explains what many might consider a minor "negative." No DVD is perfect!

The Positives - It's PAWSible!

Instruction
A critical component of an instructional DVD is the method used to present the information. An instructional designer must have been involved in this DVD's production because it follows this educational mantra: "Tell 'em, Tell them what you just told them, and then summarize what you just told them." It may sound redundant, but it works every time.

Beth Ostrowski-Parks explains each command, demonstrates the command several times, and then presents a step by step summary. You could not ask for a clearer presentation of the content. You will remember what she said.

Untrained Dogs Are Used For Demonstrations
Because untrained shelter dogs are the major part of Beth's demonstrations, you see how your dog might react. These demos include wiggly puppies, adult dogs, big and little dogs. When I read the Amazon reviews, this is the DVD aspect that persuaded me to buy.

Please understand that Beth also demonstrates the capabilities of her 3 very obedient and well-behaved dogs. But your dogs probably aren't quite as calm and compliant, so untrained dog demos show you what you will encounter in your dog training.

You Can't Put a Price Tag on Beth's Tips
When you listen the first time to the It's Pawsible! Dog Training and Puppy Training DVD you will hear many training tips Beth Ostrowski-Parks has learned over the years. Then, after you've started training your own dog and re-listen to the DVD, the important points will be obvious. There are many "aha" moments in this instructional DVD.

An example - Beth repeats this question, "Are YOU Training Your Dog or Is HE Training YOU?" Good question. Who's directing when your dogs will eat? You or the dog? If your dog dictates when dinner time happens for him, who's training who or just who is in charge?

It's PAWSible is a Reference Tool
If you're really serious about puppy or dog training, you will listen to the DVD many many times. It's well-organized into the 5-week program so you can find specific commands easily.

One day your dog will be doing something that's not quite correct. For example, my dog Alvin (8 months) is constantly pulling on his leash. I popped in the DVD, found the section on Leash Training, and figured out I might try a Gentle Leader. Beth's the expert, so I found the leader online.

Since dog training is a process and never ends, it's wise to listen to experts. Beth makes sense, so you'll learn to trust the advice.

The One Possible Negative for Some Viewers

It's PAWSible! is Reality Dog Training

In this photo - a young Prince Alvin demontrates leash training. And this was a live demo!

The one aspect of the It's Pawsible! Dog Training and Puppy Training DVD that may be a negative for some viewers - some training "difficulties" show up in the demos. This is a deliberate attempt to show viewers the real side of dog training. It's comparable to reality TV.

If you hate reality TV, find a training DVD that does not demonstrate mishaps. An example - While teaching a command, Beth drops a treat on the floor. The dog she's training naturally runs to the treat, forcing Beth to start over. That's real - it'll happen to you while you're training your dog.

How Much Does It Cost?

The more you watch this DVD, the more value it delivers.

Short Answer to this question - much less than if you paid a trainer to train your dog.

Just as an example, I hire a Certified Professional Dog Trainer for an hour, mainly to tell me if the puppies were playing or about to mutilate each other. In the process of observing them, she gave me some invaluable training tips, but the expert advice cost $75. You can buy two used It's PAWSible! DVDs for this price.
