Dog Love 101

I'm making this page about dog love to share the wealth of loyalty, entertainment and, of course, companionship that comes with owning a dog. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), and the Delta Society are my two favorite animal-care groups. Delta Society provides pet therapy or extra attention for those who are too sick to own a pet, but who need the unique love of pet companionship.

If you ask a friend to go along with you and your dog for a morning or afternoon walk, before you know it, that friendship will be deepened by the shared experience.

I decided to spend some time on the subject after my "big sister" sent a link to a YouTube clip. She knew it would sum up my feelings about my dogs. I have included it here for your enjoyment and to thank its author.

There are so many fun "things" for people like me who love dogs (and, cats, too, but that's another page), I wanted to include them.

The photo is of my dachshund, MaggieMae. Usually, when I point the camera at her she turns away. This is a rare bit of luck on my part when she lets me take a picture of her sweet face.

If we could all learn the lessons of Baxter and his loved ones I doubt there would be an unloved animal left in the world

What If You Had To Choose?

ASPCA and the Recession make for some pretty heart-wrenching stories

"There's always an upside." Somewhere along my life's way, I came up with this retort to myself for every time I am tempted to indulge in self pity for the losses and reversals I experience. It's harsh. But it's true. Also true, of course, the upside seldom is as positive as the downside is negative - if we're talking about death, divorce, loss of income. Nevertheless, if I can focus on making a gift out of the unintended benefits, it helps me to cope.

One such "upside" in the current economic hard times is that I have learned to view my two dogs as "luxury items." I haven't been devastated by financial losses like so many are these days. But, I have felt the squeeze in relatively small ways. The ability to appreciate keeping my pets and still afford their veterinary care has become one of those upsides for me. When I start to think of all the things I could do if finances were better, now I can look at my ForrestGump and MaggieMae and realize what a huge gift it is that I can afford to keep them and keep them healthy.

Not everyone can. Please help here>>

Dogs Make Great Therapists

DogLove Brings Out the Best In Children and Adults ~ The Delta Society

You might not know what to say to your friends and loved ones at birthdays and holidays, or, when someone is sick or in a crisis, but you can always let your pet say the right thing! Ever notice how a cuddly dog makes people relax.

Some wonderful volunteers go out of their way to share the wealth - personality - charm - enthusiasm for life of their dog with sick, injured and convalescing patients. Strangers not only find it easier to interact when there's a dog to focus on, but pet therapy, a somewhat broad term, is best represented by The Delta Society. This wonderful organization is a "human-services organization dedicated to improving people's health and well-being." Its website says, "We do this through positive interactions with animals."

Volunteers and their pets provide a service to hundreds of people whose quality of life is compromised by health problems or societal hardship. The site has many stories and a video that demonstrate and educate anyone interested in how pets heal people so they can have a happier healthier life.

Another DogLove resource for anyone curious about volunteering with their dog for the benefit of those less fortunate, Dog Play, is a newer organization.

Forrest Gump, my cocker spaniel, is an aggressive chewer so I buy hard-to-destroy toys

One of 172 praises for this toy ~ takes more effort to get food out than the Buster Cube, which I like because it occupies the dog longer. I find that the cube, even on its "hardest" setting only takes a few minutes to get out most of the food, and then the rest doesn't come out no matter how long the dogs work it. With the bottle the dogs can get nearly all the food out if they keep at it.

Long Hair ~ Short Hair ~ Small and Large ~ Take Your Pick!

I'd have to say my cocker spaniel at 40 pounds is right in the middle. But, my dachshund is such a delight at 14 pounds. We had a golden retriever when my children were small and they almost felt they had an adult outdoors with them when they played

Do big dogs or little dogs make the best pets?

Little dogs because they fit in my lap.

Joan4 says:

We have a 100 pound golden retriever and a 15 pound poodle. Both are a delight!

Big dogs because they have more personality.

strayspay says:

They both make good pets but the larger ones are harder to adopt out from Humane Societies so I say adopt big dogs if you have the space and time to exercise them.

Kyjen Outward Hound Auto Back Seat Dog Hammock, Black

This easy to install car carrier makes riding in the car or truck a much more pleasant experience for my dogs. Anxiety over distractions on a long trip are a thing of the past with this specialty comfort zone in the back seat. Highway travel is not nearly as tiring and my dogs make the trip without the irritability that comes from being cooped up in a car for several hours.

No more being thrown back and forth by turns or lane changes on the highway.

Love Glove (One size fits all)

This glove is wonderful!

My dogs tend to go after a brush thinking it's a toy I'm offering to them to play. This glove gets their attention, but is easier to work with to groom and pet at the same time.

Entertainment for Toddlers While Learning Love Toward Animals AND Self

"Pinduli's Mother has always tried to let her know that she is the most beautiful hyena in all the world. But not everyone feels that way, especially not Dog, Zebra, and Lion, for they have all made fun of her, telling little Pinduli that her wiggly stripes are ugly, her big ears are unattractive, and her fuzzy mane is not kept well. Pinduli wants nothing more than to just disappear, then no one will be able to hurt her feelings anymore. So she tries various ways to do just that. However, it is only when a crazy mishap that she gets into triggers a strange chain of events that she finally seeks justice, and realizes that even though she's different, she's beautiful.

Jannell Cannon has once again created an amazing children's book whose story and illustrations will stay with the reader, young or old, for years and years to come. Her illustrations are nothing short of brilliant, and the storyline is wonderful, especially for young readers, for it teaches the lesson that everyone is beautiful in their own way. This is a book that should be a part of everyone's home library. Don't miss it." by Erika Sorocco, Amazon reviewer.

Washable Dog Bed

Amazon Price: $27.03 (as of 12/23/2009)Buy Now

Comes in a wide - I mean WIDE - variety of sizes
Other beds get three or four reviews on Amazon; whereas this one by "tooniedog" is among 149 enthusiastic dog owners. Tooniedog, like many others, has "3 of these beds in various sizes, one for each of our dogs. The best part about them is that they can be easily washed and dried at home, even the 36" size. And, of course it is nice that my dogs love them too. The beds are not very thick, but dogs can be found to lie on a bare floors and so this has to be better. I have bought thick padded beds in the past and my dogs did not use them as much as these. These seem just enough for my dogs, and they can be easily topped with a folded blanket if you have a dog that likes more padding. Almost forgot, the dogs love to rest their heads on the tubular rim of the beds."

Pets Are People Too!!
