Start Early And Be Consistent

The first dog obebedience tip to live by is to start early and be consistent!

The first dog obedience tip to share is to start early and be consistent! The starting early part doesn't necessarily mean start when it's a puppy, because for many, you get the dog when they are older. What it does mean, is don't be reactive, but be proactive. Don't wait for the dog to fail before showing him that he can succeed. Your dog will no doubt pick up habits that are undesirable, and these are habits that you want to eliminate as soon as possible.

For the be consistent part...set up a time each day when you will work with your dog. It doesn't have to be for a long period of time, but do it everyday. Some great things to do everyday with your dog is to take it for a walk, especially to areas where other dogs and people are. This will ensure that your dog is socialized and well exercised. One of the most common reasons that dogs misbehave is because they don't have a productive outlet for there energy.

Establish Yourself as Pack Leader

This a very important dog obedience tip. Don't let your dog be the boss!

The second dog obedience tip to live by is to become pack leader as soon as possible. The sooner that your dog understands that you are the boss, the better. If you have others in your family that will handle the dog, make sure that they are viewed as the pack leader over the dog as well. In the end, the dog should be at the bottom of the pecking order.

For some, this won't be as much as an issue, but for many you will go through the dominance struggle with your dog. Even as a puppy, it's very important to assert your dominance. When your puppy starts to nip at your fingers, stop the behavior immediately! Many people perceive this behavior as cute, but I guarantee you it won't be so cute when your puppy is full grown.

Techniques For Establishing Pack Order

Here are just a few dog obedience tips to help establish a healthy pack order in your home.

  • Always be calm but firm with your dog. Never, and I repeat never strike your dog! This will produce nothing but fear in your dog, and you don't want your dog to be afraid of you.
  • Always make your dog sit while you enter the house. For that matter, make the dog outside until all family members have entered the house.
  • When feeding your dog, make sure to put your dog in a sit, and have him stay until you tell the dog they can eat. If the dog breaks the sit-stay, make sure to place the dog in position, then try again.
  • Another good thing to do while feeding your dog, is to sit on the floor with the bowl of food between your legs. While the dog is eating, run your fingers through the dog food, or even hand feed the dog. If your dog shows a sense of high food aggression, then start with the previous tip, and slowly build up to this one.
  • While walking your dog, make sure that the dog never walks in front of you. Make sure that the dog is a pace or two behind you.

Learn How Your Dog Communicates

Learn how to communicate with your talk, and understand his body language.

The third dog obedience tip that is well worth mastering is the ability to communicate with your dog. I don't mean learn how to bark, but I do mean understand your dogs behaviors, and his body language. On the flip side, the dog is going to learn to understand your body language, and he'll be very good at knowing when your mad!

There are many reasons why this is important, and it's crucial that this dog obedience tip sticks with you. I'll start with how your dog will learn to understand you first...Dogs are creatures of habit, and the more something is done, the more the dog will learn from that. If you yell at your dog a lot, then more than likely this is going to stick with your dog. It doesn't have to be a "mad" yell, but just yelling in general. That's why, from my experience, I would recommend talking with your dog in a calm voice.

Now, you also need to understand the way your dog communicates, and what I mean by this, is that you want to understand their body behavior. You can almost predict what they are going to do based on their mannerisms. For example, if your dog starts to pace around the house, with his nose stuck to the ground, you'd better get him outside real soon, or you're going to have a mess to clean up!
