1966 Barbie

What do you do with a Barbie doll that has 1966 stamped on the back? Well first you figure out if it is actually from 1966, and if it isn't you make sculpture!

How do you tell it your Barbie is really from 1966?

I was shopping at the Goodwill (one of my favorite places to find things to do found art sculptures with) and I see a pretty little Barbie doll. The first thing I think is that I can rip off her head and make something cool. So for 2 whole dollars, I took her home. Then hubby got a good look at her, and noticed the year 1966 stamped on the back. So we went on a hunt to figure out if she was really from 1966 before I ripped her head off.

Her Smile

That radiant Barbie smile with the teeth showing. That is a dead giveaway that it isn't really a 1966 Barbie. Barbies from that era have closed mouths. Here is a real 1966 Barbie head.

Her Arms

My Barbie has hard plastic arms that bend at the elbows. She also has a blue ring stamped through her hand. Neither is a good sign if you are looking for a 1966 Barbie.

Her torso

Notice that this Barbie has a torso that twists at the waist. That is an indication of a later Barbie. Also, she has strange white underpants that are stamped on! This happened when it got too expensive to make her little hand made cloth panties. That is the end, she is not a 1966 Barbie.

So why is it marked 1966????

Ah, there is the question. If it isn't a 1966 Barbie, why is it stamped with 1966? Well it turns out that is the year the torso was copyrighted. On the back of her head, under her hair, it turned out she was stamped with 1988. So that is the oldest she could possibly be. Sneaky! A fun website about the 1966 Barbie is Barbie, Trash or Treasure

Now I can rip her head off!

Yes! Now that I know she is worth the $2 I paid for her and not much more, I can cut her head off. So I did! I made a glass sculpture for her head, and made her a new dress. The log she is sitting on is a piece of bamboo, and the moss is actually silk cocoon fibers I got on Etsy from my favorite seller
Larkspur Funny Farm. The sculpture is called Tatiana Waits for No Man.

Tatiana Won!!!

I can't believe it! I'm still totally excited. I just won my first prize in a juried art show. Or should I say Tatiana won. :) She got into the Blue Ridge Art Show in South Carolina, and won the Ruth Hopkins award. Join me in a happy dance!

i have 2 barbies from 1966. The first one is blonde with short blonde hair curled up and her name is Stacey. The other one has dark brown hair a little longer with her hair curled up. But they both have fake eyelashes on of course their eyes. Both made in Japan. Do you think they are real? Thanks for your time! Have a great day!

Not necessarily. It has to have the right kind of lips, underwear, and waist to be actually from 1966.

Barbie Girl, I always check to make sure they aren't the good Barbies before I chop off their heads. Same thing for Ken and GI Joe.
