Christmas Surprises

My Cousin Edna Knew Me Better Than I Knew Myself

She was my father's mother's first cousin, and she was more like a grandmother on my father's side, since his mother lived far away in Oklahoma and I only had two visits with her during my life. It was Cousin Edna who was behind my Christmas surprises. I had vague ideas about what I might want. Cousin Edna knew somehow what would make my eyes sparkle and thrill my heart more than anyone did.

We visited Cousin Edna every Christmas Day after Santa Claus had been to our house. Somehow he always seemed to leave something at Cousin Edna's house as well -- something wonderful that was beyond what I ever would have thought to say I wanted.

Cousin Edna was a teacher who had never married. She had lost her own mother when a teen, and had promised her mother she would take care of her father. He lived a very long time. He was still alive for some time into my childhood. By the time he died, it was too late for Cousin Edna to marry the man she had been engaged to -- she had released him from the engagement when she committed herself to caring for her father. She lavished on me all the love she couldn't give to a child of her own and was behind many of the most special presents I ever got -- one of which was her engagement ring that she gave me before she died, wanting me to wear it.

I should at this point also introduce Auntie Lucile. She lived in the house with Cousin Edna. It was a large house with three bedrooms, a large living room and dining room, a sun room in the back of the house, and a root cellar under the house. Auntie Lucile also was a teacher -- a science teacher. Her hobby was photography. It is thanks to her that my childhood has been so well documented by the photographs she took of everything significant that happened in our family until her death. Auntie Lucile took pictures. Cousin Edna shot movies. I was their little movie star.

And so it was that on my fourth Christmas, when we visited Cousin Edna, I discovered the dollhouse under the tree. Cousin Edna must have known I needed to have something quiet to do, since I had just recovered almost miraculously from Scarlet Fever in the days when there were no antibiotics yet. The dollhouse was just the thing to keep me happy, busy and quiet at the same time. And I hadn't even known I wanted it until I saw it that Christmas Day.

I don't think I'd ever seen a dollhouse before.

Perhaps that's why I had never asked for one.

Everyone in our family knew, however, how much I loved my dolls. My very first doll was a babydoll named Cuddles. I was a devoted mother to Cuddles, and my love for her was evident to all. Almost every Christmas and birthday I got a new doll to add to my collection, but no doll, no matter how beautiful, really replaced Cuddles in my heart. I suppose it was only natural for Cousin Edna to think I would be delighted with a dollhouse, and I was.

A dollhouse without furniture isn't much fun.

My dollhouse came equipped.

It came with its own babydoll and a furnished nursery. It also had a furnished kitchen, dining room, and living room (complete with grand piano) downstairs, and a bedroom and a bathroom with the nursery upstairs. You can imagine all the fun I had playing with this. I was an only child at this point and had quite an imagination. Television wasn't even spoken of yet -- it would be years until the first one appeared in our neighborhood. Children played with toys back then, and my favorite toys were dolls -- including the one who came with my dollhouse.

Anyone can spend money on a child.

Only a select few know how to invest it in a special gift that will live forever in a child's memory. You really have to know a child well to know what will delight that child's heart. Anyone can look at a child's list and make choices from it. Not everyone can imagine what the child really wants and doesn't even know he wants until he gets it. You have to know a child's heart to delight it.

Amazon has a special dollhouse, too.

It even has furniture to go with it.

A dollhouse is an investment. It is also a very special gift for a child you love. There are many options for buying this dollhouse. You can get just the dollhouse, or you can get some of the accessories that go with it. I recommend getting at least the family of dolls and a couple of furnished rooms to start with. Think of which rooms might be most important in the child's play. If you give the dollhouse for Christmas, you can add other rooms or accessories on birthdays or for surprises later on. By then you will probably know what is most needed. I have included the basics here, but when you follow the links to the products, you will see suggestions for the other rooms and more accessories. It's a journey of discovery and it's as much fun as furnishing a real house. This house will be a real house in your child's imagination. .

About Barb

I was an only child, and my imagination was quite vivid. I could play with my dolls and dollhouse for hours. My own children also liked toys where their imaginations were the script. They often used the Playmobil toys, especially those with camping equipment and vehicles to reenact life experiences or act out their daydreams. That's why I promote such toys. I'm glad they didn't have to compete with the electronic toys of today that don't help develop imaginations as much.

Melissa & Doug Classic Heirloom Victorian Doll House

Amazon Price: $78.65 (as of 02/16/2012)Buy Now

I met Melissa and Doug at a trade show many years ago when they were selling the most fantastic wooden puzzles I'd ever seen. I started taking them to home school conventions and school book fairs and they flew off the shelves. They do quality work and their details are very realistic. A dollhouse made by them is quality and has all the details you would hope for. Don't forget to add the accessories that will make your dollhouse a doll home. They will be displayed under the main listing.
