Collecting Dollhouses and Dollhouse Miniatures

Collections of any kind can be a very satisfying hobby and dollhouse collections can provide an opportunity for the collector to specialise. Not only can you specialise in one type or make of dollhouse, within the dollhouses themselves you can equip each one to a style or period in history.

Nor are you limited to second hand or antiques markets when equipping your dollhouse, there are modern miniature makers working specifically in the field of creating period miniatures for your setting.

Of course, dollhouse miniatures are also excellent in shadow boxes or as shelf displays, as in the picture below, where a large room arrangement has been arranged on a shelf above the old handmade house I've chosen as the picture for this lens, and a tin-fronted Triang Number 40 dollhouse from the 1960s.

Dollhouse and Miniature Display

The Collector

My daughter is the dollhouse collector. She says she was warned about how addictive the hobby is, so she can't complain about her home being taken over by a rather large number of dollhouses.

When you see the older houses especially, you can understand why some of these dollhouses can go for many hundreds of pounds sterling. There is a rarity value, of course, but there are antique dollhouses which are stunningly well made and irresistably beautiful.

In the lenses below, you will see some of my daughter's collection.

Care and Maintenance

Dollhouses, like any homes, need a certain amount of upkeep and repair as time goes by. While you should always be careful not to over-restore a dollhouse, sympathietic repairs and maintenance are an ongoing task in rder to prevent deterioration.

The lens below deals with some of the aspects of repair.

The Keeper's Shed by DJD

The Keeper's Shed by Deb Jackson

In the picture above you will see a shed of a size compatible with a small dollhouse, constructed by Deb Jackson of DJD, one of my favourite miniaturists. Fully equipped as a gamekeeper's shed, including animal traps etc, this is a nice example of some of Deb's work.

Below you will find a link to my cdhm website lens which gives a taster of what is on their site. There is also a link to the cdhm website. Alongside Deb's work, the work of other miniaturists can be found on the site and browsing there is a very pleasant way to spend a bit of time.

The Deb Jackson Five

The picture above shows one of Deb's smallest miniatures, a clock for a dollhouse mantelpiece which opens at the back to show a complete miniature clockmaker's workshop.

Below the next set of links, which showcase different aspects of Deb's portfolio, is a 'taxidermy pike' in a case, also by Deb and a suitable size for a dollhouse. In the picture it is shown considerably larger than actual size.

There is something about those small items inside a house that is hard to resist. I met a woman in a bookstore that decorated doll houses and sold them. She was able to get a pretty good price for her work. 5*

These remind me of the little dollhouse furniture I had in my own dollhouse when I was a kid. Mine weren't quite as detailed but I remember how much fun it was to open little doors or pull out tiny, little shelves. I would spend hours changing the furniture around and redesigning the layout, cutting little bits of fabric to be new rugs on the floor or blankets on the beds. Your pictures are delightful. :)
