Welcome Friends Of Tammy
The Ideal Tammy doll of the 1960s was one of the first 'big headed' fashion dolls, and the first fashion doll introduced complete with parents and siblings. Tammy is one of the first anatomically correct fashion dolls to achieve the 'mother stamp of approval' at a time when some considered the Mattel Barbie doll provocative.
The Tammy Doll was made by Ideal Tory Corp. from 1962-1966 in the USA, and for several years thereafter in Japan. This lens is based on The Art Of the Ideal Tammy Doll.
A Little Bit About Tammy . . .

For some years, my hobby has been to rescue these straight legged and posn' legged wonders from trash bin destruction, closet solitude, and attic prison. The Art Of Tammy contained herein is based on the dolls in my collection that have been restored. Some dolls are still with me, others have been adopted. Although all Tammy dolls are similar in appearance, I've yet to find any two exactly alike.
The Ideal Tammy doll is truly timeless in design, and just as worthy of play or display in the 21st century as it was in the 20th century. This is a place designed for those who seek the Ideal Tammy doll for preservation, education, inspiration, and personal enjoyment. May all who visit feel welcome here.
How Ideal Toy Introduced Tammy To The World
Tammy's First TV Appearance
In the 1960s, television was still in its infancy and was used for many purposes. For example, early Saturday mornings were not always devoted to cartoons. While programs were being developed for the baby boomers, manufacturers were allowed to use segments of time to introduce their sales force to new products and promotions. One of the best in the industry at that time was the Ideal Toy Company.
Ideal Toy Company addressed their sales force on television early Saturday mornings with promotional infomercials introducing their new toys. The Ideal Tammy doll was launched at the International Toy Fair in New York, and introduced to the doll market in 1962. By 1963, the public loved the doll so much, Ideal Toy made sure Tammy had place to live, a case to hold her and her friends, a complete wardrobe, a mother, father, sister, brother, and an elusive boyfriend. Tammy also had her own car and a glamorous friend named, "Misty," (also known as "Miss Clairol, Glamour Misty.")
Ideal Toy formally introduced Tammy and her family to its sales force on national television, along with their promotional strategy which included the television programs on which Tammy commercials would air. The sales program also displayed examples of clothing and accessories made exclusively for Tammy.
In one particular sales force program, the dolls portraying Tammy's Mom, Dad, and brother, Ted, were actually prototypes, or in-store display versions of the Ideal Tammy line. These dolls had slightly different head moulds from the dolls that were manuactured for the masses. Needless to say, the early prototype or store display Tammy Family dolls are rarities, and are much sought after and prized by collectors.
The same film short also featured Tammy wearing an outfit called, "Walking Her Pet." The outfit displayed was also a prototype, slightly different from the outfit produced for market.. The sales program also featured other Ideal baby dolls, along with the introduction of "Pebbles Flintstone."
I found the video on YouTube a few years ago, and shared the link here for all who may be interested. It is unfortunate that this video was removed from YouTube unannounced for reasons unknown. The old Ideal sales program was very educational, and historic in nature. If anyone knows where this video is located, your shared information would be most welcome.
Below are a few hand picked videos about the Ideal Tammy doll from a collector's and vintage point of view.

SPECIAL NOTE ABOUT HONG KONG TAMMY: Before seeing this doll, I had never seen a curly haired Tammy "Made In Hong Kong." Then, a very nice Tammy Friend named Lisa shared a picture of her doll with me. I can't say thank you enough for sharing the picture of your curly haired "Made In Hong Kong." Lisa has given me permission to use her curly haired doll photo with an explanation, and I thought it would be good thing to share with Tammy friends who have never seen one.

Tammy collector, Johnny, is working an online reference guide to Tammy clothes and accessories. He has also put together a wonderful history page about Tammy and the Tammy family. (His Sindy site is wonderful, too.) The links to Johnny's website and The Tammy Convention can be found below.

OOAK Tammy Friend From England
Black Trendy Sindy by Nav Sikand

The Pedigree Sindy doll is Tammy's cousin from England. Sindy appeared on the market about the same time as Tammy, and was originally similar in design, appearance, and promotion. Today, one of a kind doll artists are finding ways restore and encourage a renewed interest in the vintage dolls no longer produced. The doll artist featured this week is Nav Sikand. The doll you see below is a one of a kind creation in tribute to the Black Sindy Doll. Nav dyed the doll, rerooted her hair and eyelashes, and repainted her makeup. Nav provides more information about this doll in his auction. It isn't often I see a makeover of this kind, and thought friends of Tammy would find this interesting.

The Tammy doll inspires art. Although each doll may look alike, I've yet to run across two that were identical. Each Tammy doll has its own look, and the dolls made in Japan have their own look, as well.

- I cannot believe I have never heard of the Tammy doll. I certainly am old enough. I just remember Barbie, Ken, and Skipper, Barbie's little sister. Delightful Lens. Will keep an eye out for this little lady.

- It's strange looking back at old commercials and TV programming. I guess this Tammy doll isn't popular anymore.
