THE WHOLE FAMILY ALMOST!

Dolly was my life saver.
Why she means the world to me.

Dolly came into my life not to soon after my mothers death. And the death of,my favorite dog and my favorite kitten my favorite brother. Had All went to join her. It was like all I saw was death those few years after Mom departed.
And I had stopped taking the time, to smell the roses,I did not give a care. A rose was just a thing my mother would get me to pull to the side of the road to pick for her. I ran out of time for such frailties! I had shut off all things pleasurable and just did things as I was suppose to,things I had to. I was wife and mother and that was it!! No more no less!!
I had no idea some tan furball was going to come into my life turn it upside down and set me strait. Show me again the difference between love and truly loving!!
I had two dogs at home one a huge guard dog one a tiny brown intelligent chihuahua mix with a great affection for the ladies. And an acute ability for getting his point across. But I was about to get a lesson just how intelligent a D-O-G could be!!
Walking up to the door of the shopping market one day,two boys stepped in my path. They held two tiny tan pups out to me. "You want one don't ya?" The one boy said a ornery look in his eye and a teasing tone to his voice.
No I do not! I replied. But my hand,a mind of its own, wretch out to take the tiny one in it! As my youngest said "PLeeesseee Mummie they are so cute!" I looked to the other pup her eyes beaming, like the smile on her face, and she was reaching out to me. I heard my self say........I'll take them both!!!
In the back of my mind I had the idea we would keep one the tiny one and I'd give the other to my sister, who had said she wanted a small dog. But it did not turn out that way............
How Dolly got to stay!!!
the rest of the story!!

Was over a week before I saw my sister. And I had to give her the bad news. I had had her a pup but she had avoided me too long,so i had decided to keep her. It did not take long!!
Day 1. We got home Hubby Says what ya gonna do with them? I told him my plan. "Unhunh" he said and went back to watching the boobtube!! When I went to feed the little buggers I noticed they were not near 8 weeks old more like 4-5 but they seemed to lap up enough puppy food. I thought they will be fine.
Day 2 We drove the kids to school and upon returning I noticed,my Chi Festus had the same to say,as hubby "humh" he snorted as he turned his back to them. As if to say" I do not like babies!!" when I placed them on the couch beside him. Use to this reaction with pass kittens I said "You will come around you always do!"
I made their breakfast. They ate only a small bit The tiniest one was so shy and barely played or moved about. I cuddled her and her sister. Talking to them. The bigger one hogging the attention. Cute antics hiding her tiny face and pawing at me.
As I petted her now sleeping Sissy. "Ok" I said "Sissy is sleeping why not you?" She replied with a lunge an kisses and I held her in my arms like one would a baby. And stoked her chest rubbed her soft belly.
And her eyes began to shut only for a moment. And she looked at me, A sadness in those little brown eyes. And a paw wiped at her face like she shed a tear. "You are such a little Dollbaby" I felt a smile creep up as I told her" I don't think your going anywhere,my sister's loss my gain!!"
She looked at her sleeping sister. "Want your Sissy" I said. She squirmed to be put beside her. As she snuggled to her little sister i told my Dolly, 'Every now an then hubby's have got to be allowed to be right!!'
The girls were Ecstatic When I told them "LOOKS LIKE WERE KEEPING TWINS"
They at first thought my sister had declined the pup till I set them strait. I promised The Doll baby she was going no where an her sissy too!!

Day 3 Sissy will not eat at all. An Doll I can only get to nibble so long as her sister is at the dish. And I wonder if the truck ride is the cause.
By Day 4 I had two sick puppies. Doubting it was car sickness.
The next few days are somewhat a blur From lack of sleep. From round the clock nursing of two sick pups. I had at first thought car sickness but no such luck! Then I dreaded Parvo But I had nursed pups through parvo before since the local vet {S.O.B story he is} told me he preferred I not bring diseased pups to his office. "They all just die." Though the vet said it was not possiable, I had had success before. This time I had to.The twins depended on me!!
But parvo never lasted this long before. Dolly seemed to be doing good under my care and after a two day bought of puking she was eatting again. Not alot but she was back to playing to. When she missed her sister and I'd put her to bed next to her. I was amazed at the care she took the gentleness she showed her tiny sister. I was about to go the hundred miles to a vet I might trust. When Sissy looked as if she were feeling better.
Finally after more than a week they were playing gently together again. Doll always was more rambunctious seemed to wait for her little sister to pounce and slowed down so she could catch her. And when I saw Sissy tire I put Sissy to bed,Doll would cry to be put to bed to.
An I was again amazed how she would gently curl up to her littler sister. Sleeping or not Dolly would set holding her Sissy in a puppy hug.
The good day only lasted that day and into the evening an Sissy was sick to her stomach again. That night as I put Dolly down into bed with her Sissy. I told Dolly in the morning we would find a good vet. Cause I was at a loss.
I fell asleep that last night did not mean too but I was so tired, naps I was catching were not at ease or restful. I slept what I thought was all night restfully,it felt good. I dreamed of a younger version of my mother in a white delivery room being handed a baby. She turned to me an said "Oh look she has brown eyes!!" And I woke to the most heart wrenching cries coming from the bed were the pups had lay.
Dolly scratching at the side of their make shift box bed like something was after her. Never seen her act so. I picked her up soothing her like one might a child having a bad dream. She calmed to a whimper and I wondered if she was in pain. I looked at the clock I was only asleep for about an hour. I examined Dolly no tender spot till I went to put her back in with her Sissy and she wrapped her paws about my hand in a grip. And gave a squeal just beyond a whimper. So I told her "OK you can sleep with me. But lets check on Sissy." Sissy had passed.
When I went to feed her after a nap together she looked at the bowl an whimpered. I said " I could not bear it if you got sick all over again and I lost you too. A baby has to eat." As if she under stood she ate. By morning we had had a long conversation and I...I decided..... was either out of mind or I had a very special little one here.
Cause when I say conversation iI mean a two way conversation!!! She eyed me with every word. She answered me in tiny barks yips or whimpers. She seemed to under stand more than any dog I would of ever thought could.

A few short bits
Lessons my furry child taught me!!
My Mom use to say from the time she caught me reading 'Henny Penny' to a pup when I was three, she knew I had a way with animals. Said sometimes she thought I could speak their language. I could train them to do anything.
I had all my life loved an respected dogs, all animals really,at times more then humans. I had had several dogs that were intelligent beyond, dumb dog status. I always new they could get their point across if you listened or paid attention. They learn words and can contain a vocabulary beyond sit, stay, walk, food.
But I never before had one that listened to every word and could teach me a few things. As my Dolly has.
In one very busy week between all my errands, the bus stop,an choir practice. I had just picked the kids up. It was one of those days you are running every which way an hoping for a few extra hours to get it all done. We all have had those days!!
We were driving down a back road wildflowers had just begun to bloom in full force. And my DD mentioned that we were running late.
That is when Dolly started!! She barked,an pounced like she wanted something that was outside the truck. Bathroom break I thought. So I pulled up at the spring,a large pipe in the ground that gushed water, from an under ground spring.
I begged Dolly to P quick. But she seemed to only want to walk about, pulling me in one direction or another. Nosing the weeds like she was looking for some thing. I decided to put her back in the truck and we went to pull away. Dolly carried on again,I continued.
A few moments later she began again. Then quieted only to start again in a moment. My DD says Mom she wants something!!
I pulled the truck to the side. Again I took her out. Sat her at the edge of the dirt road and she wanted picked up. I put her in the truck. She just began barking in the weeds. "There is nothing there silly" I told her. But she was adamant a cry a bark,a groan and a pounce told me so. Something was there that she could not get to. And she want wanted it,and she wanted it now!
I remembered the stories I had told about mom. Right there under the brush hidden was two wild roses,so I picked them and handed them to my DD for Dolly. Dolly smiled but barked again. I looked hard 'there are no more' I told her. But she still wanted something adamantly.
Below the rose bush was a little yellow flower. So I picked it to. And handed it to Dolly who sniffed it. Then Dolly went to lay down satisfied now with herself!!
Sometimes you don't gotta, just, stop an smell the roses!! But all the wildflowers you see too! And maybe just reflect a moment an give a thought,of all the other things mother earth has given us!!
Call me Crazy...
but she even talked some others into believing she AIN"T just another dumb D-O-G!!

Dolly has fans.
We use to go to the flea market. When she was a youngin. One day I come back to the booth after a stroll. And this women I,an Dolly and my girls had seen before on several occasions. Is dragging her poor husband over to our booth. Telling him now remember do not.....just then he says "Oh my gheesh look at that dog in a stroller." Dolly started cussing him "Bark bark errr humph humph ert Bark bark"
"Now you gone an done it" the women saiid "Apologize to Miss Dolly right now!" She drug her husband in front of Dolly. "She will not stop barking at you till you do!! How are you gonna be able to talk to her? If you be so rude and say such nasty things!" She smiled at me.
The man got a strange look on his face. As I rushed in there not sure if Dolly might bite him. "Yes you said a bad word. Dolly please he didn't mean it." Dolly calmly looked at the man an he Said "Ok sorry ....are we friends?" Dolly grunted. " My wife tells me you talk." Dolly barked once. " Are we friends now?" Dolly shook her head. "Can we shake on it? " He held out his hand and Dolly put a paw in it.
Their conversation lasted a few more minutes till he was satisfied. Then he turned to me..." I thought my wife was hallucinating again when she told me she met a ...um baby girl that could converse!" just then his wife smacked him..."She is utterly amazing!" He laughed " I never before done that.....carried on a conversation with a ...such an intelligent Miss Dolly. And a stroller how did you ever train her to that?"
So for maybe the millionth time i told. "Took no training" I told him. "Her furless sister's kept saying we should get Dolly a stroller the ground at flea markets is hard on her feet and she don't like to walk so....we got her one one day at a yard sale. We discussed it a moment. And opened it to check it out. She jumped in it before we changed our minds... I guess. We had to buy it then. And she rides in one ever since."
