What Excactly Is A Dory Boat ?

Traditionally the Dory is a small, shallow-draft boat. Usually it is about 15 to 22 feet long. The Dory is a lightweight and versatile boat that has high side, sharp bows and a flat bottom. It has been used for fishing for centuries in waters and lakes as well as on the open sea. The Dory is easy to build because of it's simple lines.

Despite the simplicity of the boat the dories are well known for their seaworthiness and rowing ease.
The Dory comes is build in a few traditional types which are:
Beach dories - Banks dories - Sailing dories - River dories - Motor dories

Why Is The Dory Boat So Popular ?

Dory boats are excellent row boats and they are built on a generous flare. Dory boats are dry and stable, especially whey they are loaded. The Newfoundland Dory by tradition is narrower in the bottom aft than it is forwards. This makes the Dory draw more water aft and track better. The bottoms are flat with a two inch flare fore and aft. The Dory simply makes you feel safe as it is sturdy and stable and feels good.
