Doujin Overload - an Auckland Anime Convention

Doujin Overload is a local art convention for anime and manga fans. Auckland has a small but growing community of anime fans, strongly influenced by the presence of Japan people and products in New Zealand culture, population and economy.

New Zealand has a small population, and manages very few conventions of any kind - Doujin Overload is the first purely anime-based convention to take off.

From the Official Site:
"What is Doujin Overload?

Doujin Overload is an exhibition of the constantly evolving style of communication, art and entertainment called doujinshi. The organizer, Anime NZ Ltd, is composed of like-minded individuals who share a deep appreciation for this sophisticated and thought provoking medium of expression, and wish to share the experience of this style of art with the community

Our goal is to celebrate the passion and enthusiasm of our local doujinshi artists. Doujinshi is a Japanese phenomenon, and while major aspects of what inspires it in its original culture have recently filtered down into our own popular culture - through translated works, animation and merchandise like Dragon Ball Z, Evangelion, Pokemon and Yugi-Oh - they are but the tip of the iceberg. While they are relatively well recognized names, awareness of this growing branch of popular culture is still limited in New Zealand. However it is growing due to officially released and published material becoming easier to find and acquire. Forums, venues, and even just awareness of the opportunities for fan and fan-artists still remain under-developed. Enthusiasts can experience difficulties in finding others with similar interests, and there are few social forums - that they are aware of - where they can gather together. By giving local doujinshi artists the opportunity to increase their exposure - by displaying their works to the general public through a common forum - Doujin Overload will increase awareness of this form of artistic expression."

Who the heck are you?
Good question. Call me.. the man in black. No? Fine, fine. I'm someone who got tired of looking on six different sites, 17 forum threads and asking half a dozen questions each time I want to check something.
I had a stall at the 2009 event, which was my first convention - I am NOT an expert. I do know some of the questions I want - and wanted - answers to, though.
I'm someone who likes collecting people and facts into nice, handy pages.
I'm someone who doesn't know enough - but knows this page needs more. A lot more.

I am NOT official in any way. This page may be wrong, incomplete or misleading. But I hope it helps.

(on that, anyone who wants me to add something, link to something, correct something... go ahead. PLEASE)

yes, that does include typos)

Sponsors and Stores

Follow the money

The Graphic Novel Cafe (GNC) is the primary sponsor and organiser of Doujin Overload. However, other sponsors have been invited in - Madman, Heroes For Sale, Freelance Animation Otherworlds and Nuke-Bloodaxe.Org were all involved in the 2009 event.

Doujin Overload: Where, When and What

Location, location, Location. Or is it all a matter of timing?

Doujin Overload is held in July, once a year, (there is no set date) and was first held in 2006.
It takes place in the humble, sprawling, polluted city of Auckland, touchdown and final destination of the majority of immigrants to New Zealand.

Location:
Doujin Overload has been held at, alternately, the Hyatt Regency Hotel or the Mercure Hotel each year. In 2010 it will be at the Hyatt Hotel.
(the first is larger and right around the corner from the GNC and the University - so University students can nip out and check the internet! - the second has the benefit of pulling in random strangers of the street. With sucking tentacles.)

Japanese for Manga

Communication Problems

Of course, the most obvious problem for would-be manga fans is that most of the manga and doujinshi are in Japanese.

Japanese in Mangaland is specific to the more 'everyday' Japanese used in manga (rather than the more formal version taught in the classroom!)

There are also many dictionaries available - including online and an increasing number of English translations available to download online.

Japanese in Mangaland: Learning The Basics

Amazon Price: $12.00 (as of 05/26/2012)Buy Now

I've been studying Japanese for several years, completing 3 years of Japanese in college and even studying and taking the JLPT (Japanese Language Proficiency Tests). However, in most Japanese Language textbooks, you learn formal Japanese which is fine if you are going to be using it for business. If you want to watch Japanese TV programs, anime, read manga or talk to your Japanese friends, you are in for a rude awakening, because they don't speak the same Japanese you just learned out of a textbook.

Thank you, thank you for Japanese in Mangaland. Even though I've studied many Japanese textbooks, with this book I was finally able to learn some of the missing pieces of the puzzle of understanding "informal" or conversational Japanese. I don't mean rude or vulger slang that some other gimmicky books might teach you, but real Japanese that the everyday person might use.

However, I don't recommend this book as your primary text. Other textbooks like "Genki" or "Japanese for Busy People" have good exercises and audio tapes that go along with the text. Japanese in Mangaland is an excellent suppliment because of it's explanation of informal Japanese.

Doujinshi - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Doujinshi are self-published Japanese works, usually manga or novels. They are often the work of amateurs, though some professional artists participate as a way to publish material outside the regular industry. The term doujinshi is derived from doujin (literally "same person", used to refer to a person or persons with whom one shares a common goal or interest) and shi ( a contraction of zasshi, meaning "magazine"). Doujinshi are part of a wider category of doujin including but not limited to art collections, anime, hentai and games. Groups of d%u014Djinshi artists refer to themselves as a circle. A number of such groups actually consist of a single artist: they are sometimes called kojin circles (personal circles).

Artists in 2009

The most important people.

The number of artists jumped from 23 stalls in 2007, 30 stalls in 2008 to 70 in 2009.
Most of the artists are young, usually fans of anime and manga, and making their first forays into the mysterious world of selling art. A large number of artists work in pairs or groups ('circles') - such as Hiyaku Studios

A full list of those involved will be found further down - I need to decide on the best way to list/display them, especially as the artists can change betweene vents, and because it's GROWING. If you were there, and are not listed, leave me a comment.

Products, Copyright and Fandoms

What is sold at DO?

There are some restrictions on what artists can sell - specifically, fanart that contravenes copyright laws (parody and fair use is acceptable). See the statement here:

All paperbased artworks and products (eg prints, artbooks, doujinshi, bookmarks, postcards, paper puppets) are allowed, but items not listed - toys, badges, giant hats, and slaves - must be preapproved. This usually requires a sample of the product in question.

Original art usually sells well. Especially if it is of mermaids XD

Nuke Bloodaxe has been running a cheap printing service in support of DO
General rules:
dropped off on a CD at the GNC, and then the printing returned there
The artist provides any unusual paper, within 150-250 gsm (?) - be aware that it may not work, and will have to be tested on the printers.
leave a month for the printing to be done, before DO - because every other artist will be using the same printer, because if your files are even slightly off, they'll have to be fixed, because - unless you've done it before - you don't know for sure what the printed result will look like.
And because many artists choose to sign, number and sketch in the artbooks (especially) in advance.

Specs and filesizes:
All images should be 300 or higher DPI, and - if possible - checked to be CYMK colour compatible (files should be RGB format though)
For an a5 artbook:
fullbleed (risk losing the edges):
With a 5mm border:

For small postcards:
These are printed onto an a4 sheet and guillotined

For a4 prints and pages:
fullbleed (risk losing the edges):
With a 5mm border:

For a3:
fullbleed (risk losing the edges):
With a 5mm border:

So if you are ordering different sizes, you will need to provide different files.

What else should I know when printing?

Art Contest

There is an art competition run every year - entrants hand in their work on the day, and it is judged by public vote. This has been restricted to traditional media only for the last few years, and again in 2010, and is required to be somewhat relevant to the anime/manga theme of the event :D
Prizes in 2008 were figures from Weta, and were sponsored by Madman in 2009.

The prizes for 2010 are sponsored by Madman and are:
Black Lagoon Season 1 and Season 2 Box Sets.
Deathnote Box Set.
Devil May Cry Blu-ray collection.

Art contests: traditional versus digital

Should digital be allowed?

For the last two years it has been limited to traditional art only, due to the difficulty of judging whether a piece is the artist's own work, and of comparing between styles.

Digital art is increasing in popularity and being increasingly recognised as a valid art style - but does make it very easy to steal work and adapt it.

Should digital art be allowed into competitions alongside traditional art?

Loading

No. It's not possible to judge fairly.

Yes! It's unfair to leave it out.

Xee says:

I agree with anon, too. judged separately would be best ^^.

Pukeko says:

I agree with anon. Ok to include it, as long as it is judged separately.

Anon#1 says:

Yes, if it's judged in a separate 'digital' category.

The unavoidable consequence of anime XD

While there is no offical cosplay competition (so far) many of the attendees - both patrons and artists - take the chance to air out their cosplays. The cosplayNZ forums also arranged their first Cosplay Ball to coincide with the July 2009 event, and hope to make it an annual party.

There have been dances performed in cosplay from anime shows each year (videos below) and there are a lot of photos in the blogs and photo albums (linked below).

Here's the obligatory rundown of DO'09 yesterday. :D

[info]say_o_kay and I got to Hyatt at about 8ish and set up. The table was woefully small... well at least it seemed like it, cos I had 3 A3 posters which took up like 80% of the space. Somehow I managed to fit my manga, badges and commission example folder on too...

It is now 8.33am the day after Doujin Overload and the Auckland Cosplay Ball. Oh god it was so much fun. I was really busy running everywhere but once I got used to the whole idea I would have next to no time to look around at artworks.

If people want to know who I was at DO, I was the Suzumiya Haruhi making announcements and dragging cosplayers up to be interviewed 8D. If it seemed like I was really pushy I'm sorry *offers cookies*. Gosh I'm actually still rather tired.

Doujin Overload this year was held at Hyatt Hotel, which was only about 5 minutes walk from my house. When we first arrived at Hyatt Hotel, it was kind of confusing to search for where DO was held. The place was quiet, and there was no sign outside of the entrance whatsoever that mentioned about DO. Turned out it was held in an underground exhibition room, where the only signs were written in small fonts (which were probably written by the hotel's staff, since they spelled 'Doujin' incorrectly) that we almost did not noticed it.

A few sales BUT THAT'S OKAY!!

Original stories and yaoi do not sell well in new zealand unless you draw insanely good or are a very popular artist or both. very drained emotionally, mentally, physically, everything-ly. As much as I love fanart, drawing it is something I'm not used to doing. I prefer original because of the fact that it's different and not so mainstream. But it's what I'm going to be doing next year. That's all I found really sells. So, why not. I'll jump on the bandwagon. If ya can't beat em, join em. A repeat of this year not something I want to go through again ya know? XD I don't take disappointment very well.

They were very good.

Names to be taken. Does anyone have a recording?

Figure Display

"You know you've made it when you've been moulded in miniature plastic"

The Figure display at Doujin Overload is set up and maintained by private collectors.

The figure display in 2009 was a lot more impressive, due to different collectors donating their precioussssss figures to the display. Figures ranged from tiny, to giant dollfies.

This is so interesting. Hard to believe we live so close, yet in completely different worlds. I would love to attend this event to see the art and the cosplay. Blessed.

Now, while it would be quite easy for me to use my own art, it's hardly representative of what DO is about. If anyone has images they would like used here, I would be very very happy to hear from you.

Two ways :
- link me to the original image online somewhere and I will copy, download and upload it in some form.
- crop and resize it yourself, and link me to the picture you would like used (eg on Photobucket), here or email me

It can be 100 pixels, it can be larger.
It can be watermarked (as long as it still looks like a picture)
I WILL link back to the original image, if you let me know where it is.

I want as many different artists as possible.
