Appaloosa Movie Synopsis:
Actor Ed Harris takes only his second stab at directing, following the Oscar-winning feature POLLOCK (2000) with this spirited western. Harris draws on a strong cast, many of whom have acted with him in previous films, to tell the story of two gunfighters attempting to bring peace to the small town of Appaloosa in the late 1800s. Virgil Cole (Harris) and Everett Hitch (Viggo Mortensen) ride into the windswept New Mexico town and are hired to bring vigilante entrepreneur Randall Bragg (Jeremy Irons) to justice. Bragg has imposed a reign of terror over Appaloosa, but his murderous actions are tempered when Cole and Hitch take control. Matters get complicated when widower Allison French (Renee Zellweger) flounces into town and variously woos Cole, Hitch, and Bragg, allowing Harris to throw in a few neat twists as his two principal characters attempt to bring the miscreant entrepreneur to justice. APPALOOSA is a slow-moving and beautifully shot feature that perfectly translates the dusky New Mexico landscape to celluloid. The film stands shoulder to shoulder with 21st-century westerns such as THE ASSASSINATION OF JESSE JAMES BY THE COWARD ROBERT FORD and THE PROPOSITON, and much like those films Harris's feature draws heavily on deeply affecting performances from his leads. Irons is particularly affecting as the baleful Bragg, who brings a real air of menace to the screen any time he appears on camera. The nuanced turns by Harris and Mortensen play like a master class in subtlety, with the two seasoned actors perfectly delivering two stoic characters who are masking a lifetime of pain and suffering. Harris's feature is a welcome addition to the fold of introspective westerns, effortlessly standing alongside similar efforts such as Clint Eastwood's UNFORGIVEN or James Mangold's 3:10 TO YUMA.

Appaloosa ~ Movie Review
Essentially a buddy movie in which the cops tote shotguns and travel on four legs instead of four wheels, Appaloosa takes the traditional notion of a lone lawman fighting injustice and turns it successfully on its head. Based on a spritely western by detective novelist Robert B. Parker, creator of the Spenser series, the film follows the exploits of Virgil Cole (Ed Harris) and Everett Hitch (Viggo Mortensen), gunslinging partners in a ''peacekeeping'' business who are hired by town officials to keep villains in check. But when the partners take on a job in Appaloosa, a ragtag settlement in the New Mexico territory, the job tests not only their friendship but also their mettle. Rogue rancher Randall Bragg (Jeremy Irons, not entirely adept at swallowing that plummy accent) has shot up an Appaloosa marshal, and the city elders want him stopped. Cole and Hitch eventually capture him, but a distraction in the form of the widowed piano player Mrs. French (Renée Zellweger) flits into town and pretty soon all sorts of chaos follows.
The film doesn't carry the narrative or philosophical weight of last year's excellent remake of 3:10 to Yuma, but it turns out to be a satisfying, if occasionally wandering, adventure. The screenplay lifts lines wholesale from Parker's pithy dialogue, and director Harris, who also directed and starred in 2000's biopic **10**ck, brings a dusty realism to the setting. Alternately tough and amusing, he's the perfect actor to play this gruff but secretly vulnerable character, who transforms engagingly from man-of-few-words to nervous suitor whenever Mrs. French arrives on the scene. Sadly, the audience will feel a lot less affection for the flighty widow. Zellweger seems miscast, too modern for the 1882 setting, and supremely unworthy of the attention lavished on her, although Cole points out that he, like most of the men of Appaloosa, are accustomed to far less genteel womenfolk. ''She's very clean,'' he tells Hitch, ''and she chews her food nice.'' Such is romance before the advent of indoor plumbing.
The real love story here, though -- no Brokeback jokes, please -- is between Cole and the laconic, West Point-educated Hitch, whose genuine affection for the older man turns out to be the film's heart. Watching him casually supply words while Cole struggles for them is a treat -- the two actors play off each other with a delightful, understated comic timing. Theirs is a partnership for the ages, and the crafty creators of Appaloosa make great use of it.

Appaloosa ~ interview with Ed Harris
Director-star even wrote and sang the song over the film's closing credits
First, Harris secured the rights to Robert B. Parker's Western novel "Appaloosa" and pitched it to buddy Viggo Mortensen, who agreed to co-star with him in the saga of two upright pals aiming to clean up a lawless town.
Then Harris co-wrote the screenplay, produced and directed the film and put in 10-hour days to help edit it.
Harris even followed the singing-cowboy trail, co-writing and crooning a rootsy song for the end credits.
Appropriately, Harris was on a horseback-riding trip with his family in Ireland in 2005 when he read Parker's book. Harris said he had read some of Parker's "Spenser" mysteries and picked up "Appaloosa" because it "had a cool cover and looked like a neat book.
"Then I just started reading this thing and was totally delighted with the relationship between these two guys," Harris said in an interview at the Toronto International Film Festival, where "Appaloosa" premiered.
"I read the first couple scenes, literally, probably read 35 pages of the book or less and called my agent and said, 'Find out if this is available,' because it just tickled me."
Challenging project
The movie rights were open, and soon after, Harris passed the book on to Mortensen while they were promoting their film "A History of Violence" at the Toronto festival that same year. After Mortensen signed on, Harris got to work on the screenplay with his friend Robert Knott.
Harris stars as the close-lipped Virgil Cole, who arrives in Appaloosa as the new marshal along with longtime trail partner Everett Hitch (Mortensen). Bold, supremely capable and unshakably loyal, the two implement an iron-fisted rule over the town, taking on a gang led by a murderous rancher (Jeremy Irons).
Complicating matters is Virgil's romance with a widow (Renee Zellweger), a woman prone to indiscretion and indelicate behavior.
"Appaloosa," which has played two weekends in narrow release and expands to more theaters Friday, marks Harris' return to directing after his acclaimed filmmaking debut "Pollock," which earned him the third of his four acting Academy Award nominations and won the supporting actress Oscar for Marcia Gay Harden.
