Here is my favourite review of No Reservations.
"Don't eat before seeing "No Reservations," the new semi-dramatic, romantic-comedy that features an endless menu of delectable dishes that must be paraded out according to the standard formula of such food-themed movies. The people may be beautiful, but the food looks even better.
"No Reservations" is based on the 2001 German film "Mostly Martha," but this new version, from Carol Fuchs' script, has been predictably Hollywoodized. The now, much more beautiful characters go through the similar trials and errors and make the same mistakes. In the end, the same life lessons are learned, and ample quantities of exquisitely prepared food still serve as metaphor.
Catherine Zeta-Jones plays Kate Armstrong, the obsessive and autocratic chef at a trendy NYC Bleecker St. restaurant owned by Paula (Patricia Clarkson). As Kate tells her nameless shrink (Bob Balaban), she has had no relationships in years and does little outside the restaurant, where others in the kitchen fear her wrath but respect her immense culinary abilities.
Through a quick movie-contrivance, Kate suddenly has the responsibility of her young niece Zoe (the precociously talented Abigail Breslin), forcing the chef to alter her lifestyle. Because Kate's attentions drift, Paula hires the free-spirited Nick (Aaron Eckhart) as sous-chef to help out in the kitchen. Kate eventually must juggle her changing personal emotions and her awareness of Zoe's growing sense of abandonment.
Australian director Scott Hicks mostly successfully mixes the differing styles called for in such a soufflé. But now that the main story has been modified (i.e., dumbed down) to fit a wider audience and a Hollywood formula, much remains predictable. When Kate says she never eats dessert, you know she'll eat one of Nick's desserts. When Kate says she never eats during the day, you know she'll eat one of Nick's meals during the day.
But most of all, you know that Zoe will gradually shed her resentment of aunt Kate and love her. And although Nick says he's taken a head chef job in San Francisco, you know where he'll end up.
But the most unbelievable thing is that these two people, who show huge talent for making a wide variety of some of the most delicious dishes imaginable, both still have thin, excellent bodies".
