Downloading YouTube Videos - Introduction

If you key in the keywords "downloading youtube videos" or any other similar search string into one of the search engines, you will be met with a confusing number of download choices. Finding the best one is not easy unless you are somewhat of an expert and you know what you are looking for.

Some things to consider while you are looking is whether you want to convert on a website or on your own PC. If you want to convert on a website there are many places to go to do a straight download of a YouTube video. What you really probably want is something that will download and convert the video out of YouTube format as YouTube format is unreadable on the video players that I know of.

If you open a downloaded YouTube video that has not been converted you will know immediately by the garbled garbage on your computer screen. While I was testing out downloaders and converters I did run into this problem. There may be instances where you want the downloaded video in a format for something other than your computer, ipod, or mobile phone. For that reason I looked for the most robust download/converters that I could find.

First, you should understand that you can accomplish your download and conversion on different platforms. You can download and convert on a website, in your browser, or install and use a software program for this task.

There are many download/converters, standalone downloaders, and standalone converters that you can find when looking somewhere that offers free software downloads such as Download.com. The software that they offer on this site is sometimes free, sometimes it is shareware, and you must pay a nominal fee to download the software. Download.com can be found here:

http://www.download.com/

The problem with downloading off of sites such as Download.com is that the download files may contain malware, and you must make sure you are protected by good antivirus software that will catch any malware included in the file and halt your download with a warning to you regarding the risk of continuing the download.

Personally, I try not to download from such download sites as a rule because of the risk involved.

I am under the assumption that free is best. I only looked at free download and conversion options. If you are looking for a review of download software that you can buy, you will not find it here.

I will only present the best that I have found, concentrating on offering the most options to you - as you could be wanting the download for many things.

Downloading YouTube Videos From The Web

Couple With Laptop The very best download and converter that I have found is Media-Convert. I made a video, and uploaded it to YouTube, and then downloaded it. Throughout all these tasks I tried out many down loaders and converters and most were a disappointment in some way or another. The worst was when one of the programs I was testing said it had made a conversion and it had not. That was a time waster and very frustrating.

Media-Convert is browser based, and offers many different options as far as your input and output formats. It converted into many formats and from many formats very reliably.

All you do is copy the URL of the YouTube Video that you want to download and enter it into the URL box on the Media-Covert screen. Then you select your output format. What format do you want your output video to be in?

Here is a little guideline of the most popular formats used today:

.MOV - was developed by Apple Computer and Apple Quicktime and is used by proprietary Apple Quicktime Player

.AVI - is defined by Microsoft and is a common computer format that is used by programs such as Camtasia, for example The .avi format is the most common format for movies on a computer and can be opened in Windows Media Player as well as other players if the appropriate codecs are installed.

.FLV - is a flash compatible file and is an open format that is supported Adobe Flash. It is also supported by non Adobe/Quicktime programs. Open these programs with Adobe Flash player.

.WMV - is Windows Media Video and can be opened using Windows Media Player

.MP4 - MPEG4 is an International Standards Organization (ISO) format. You cannot open it with Windows Media Player unless you install DirectShow-compatible MPEG4 decoder packs. You can however, open this format on Quicktime Player or any similar player.

.MKV - Matroska Multimedia Container is and open standard free Container format. It is intended to serve as a universal format for storing common multimedia content like movies or TV shows. Open these files with a video media player (you need a CCCP playback pack to play/view this format).

.3GP - These are multimedia files for wireless networks. It is the video format used to view and record video on mobile phones, etc. You can use Apple Quicktime or RealPlayer to play this format.

.M4V - This format is used in Apple Itunes and Ipod. It can be renamed to MP4 file extension. MP4 is a streamable format that supports all kinds of media content. Use Media Player Classic to play this format.

.VOB - Video file format used on DVDs to store movies. Use any DVD to open these files.

The above guideline should help you choose your output format - as you can see when examining the list above, it all depends on what type of player or what players you have available to you and what formats they support.

You can find Media-Convert here:

There was one additional browser based converter that worked well also. The one draw back to it was that you do not get your converted file immediately. This browser based conversion service emails the converted file to you. It took some time for the email to reach me, which was a drawback in my mind as I wanted the converted file NOW. The name of this converter is Zamzar. If you are interested in trying out Zamzar, you can find it here:

May your conversions always work properly! Happy converting to you.

Downloading YouTube Videos Using A Software Program

Girl With IpodYou may want to use a program on your PC to download and convert YouTube videos rather than a web based (browser based) converter like Media-Convert. I have searched for several days, and then some, for a reliable program that is free that you can use to download and convert your YouTube videos into different formats that you might want.

I found that this was not as easy as it might seem. I kept running into all sorts of difficulties, such as download and install difficulties, conversion problems, and flat out bugs in the software that I had downloaded. Most of the programs that I reviewed sounded great, their descriptions read as if the program would do most everything I needed and more. But when it came to delivering on these descriptions, they all fell short except for one little program called YouTube Download & Covert from Cubed Labs.

Here is the URL for the Youtube Download & Convert program from Cubedlabs:

http://www.cubedlabs.com/

This program has a simple to use interface and converts to the most popular video formats, including Ipod. This program actually converted the videos that I tested out on it - which is more than some of the programs I have downloaded have done.

The one drawback to converting with a program locally on the PC as opposed to converting the video on the web using a service such as Media-Convert is that it takes much longer on the PC than it does on the web to actually perform the conversion of the video format. If you are interested in the fastest way to download and convert your videos, I recommend using the web based converter as opposed to a program installed on your PC.

Enjoy!

How To Improve Your Download Speed. Understand It.

This video gives a great overview of different download options and explains kilobytes versus kilobits so you can determine the download speed of your own connection.

Howto Improve Your Download Speed. Understand it.

Quit trying to be clever by saying 1024. I was talking about how bandwidth is advertised. Please read this: http://blogs.zdnet.com/hardware/?p=26 Check and see if your advertised bandwidth is what you're really getting and learn how to compare different internet service providers. Your speed is controlled by your ISP so understanding how it's advertised is key to improving and comparing it. Yes I know you will go super fast with tons of seeds so quit whinning. Torrents with 10 - 20 people are another story. Tons of people complain their torrent downloads go slow because they're asshats and super-limit the upload rate for fear of the RIAA or their ISP provides horrible upstream rates. Yes the bandwidth can be capped from where you're downloading from. I'm aware of that. The game download was capped at around 450KB, but I used that as an example comparing kbps to KB/s. At the end it's not a mistake saying the upload speed is about as fast as you will download on p2p networks/ torrents. Torrents are based on share ratios so you'll get as fast as you can give. As always there are exceptions specially for torrents with tons of seeds but it's a good rule of thumb. This is the only and definitive way of increasing your connection speed. Your ISP controls it! If it's not going as fast as it should call your ISP's tech support. If you want it faster, compare rates and find what's most affordable for the speed you want. Understanding how they advertise their packages is key to knowing if you're getting ripped off. %%howto
