Who She Is To Me

Being a Dr. Laura fan for over 25 years, I can still say that my loyalties haven't changed. We have similar values, for one thing (which is the most important thing). My mother and I used to listen to Dr. Laura on the radio when I was a teenager. It was during my parents' divorce that I had the privilege of visiting her office. I briefly met Laura and shook her hand, making small talk while waiting to see Rhoda, Dr. Laura's associate. Rhoda arrived and took me into a cozy room, asking some open ended questions. She was reassuring and listened patiently when I finally had gained enough confidence to share with her my new enthusiasm for the Bible, which I had been reading. She brought tears to my eyes when she not only encouraged, but applauded my love for God and living in moral rectitude according to what I was reading. At the time, no adults in my life had appreciated my zeal, let alone praised my initiative to find out more about God. It was refreshing, to say the least. I walked out of that office savoring Rhoda's encouraging words and the wisdom behind them, and they have never left me. I was a little sad and frightened to leave that office for the big bad world. But I felt equipped as best as I could be. I had done something right, and I was determined to continue doing so for the rest of my life, no matter what happened.

Rhoda passed away around January of 2008. May God remember the blessing she was to me and others like me in her lifetime. My condolances...

Dr. Laura, I hope you will read this. I don't blame you if you don't remember me; it was so long ago and our encounter was very brief. Although my thanks to Rhoda will have to wait, I don't remember thanking you. Yet, I am just as grateful today as the day I walked out of your office. In spite of many difficult challenges in my life, I was able to take God's council, Rhoda's words, and your radio show with me through it all. I know that you and Rhoda are two special people that God placed in my path at just the right time in order to help light my way. So... not only do I thank you, and if ever given the chance, Rhoda, but I also thank my Mom... for bringing me to you.

She has raised over $1 million for Operation Family Fund with the sale of her jewelry four times per year on her website, and with the proceeds from her 60th Birthday Bash benefit.

Her twelfth and newest book, "In Praise of Stay-At-Home Moms," was released by Harper-Collins in April, 2009. She has been married to Dr. Lewis Bishop for 24 years. Their son, Deryk, enlisted in the US Army in 2005, and has returned from a tour of duty in Afghanistan.

Who Am I?

I am biased... on purpose. I discriminate, but not between races, sexes, social classes, etc. I discriminate between right and wrong; holy and perverted; good and evil; just and unjust. Turning a blind eye to the differences between these things (in the name of equality) never fails to place one on the backward side of every issue.
