Dr. Kal
At the age of 7, Dr. Kal moved with his mother to Queens Village, New York. His mother was a single parent, raising 4 boys and working over 60 hours a week. Dr. Kal was the eldest son. His love of food, responsibilities at home, love of video games, and physical inactivity led to continuous weight gain and the development of "boy breasts".
Dr. Kal's physical appearance led to constant teasing by children at school and in his neighborhood. This led to him having a very low physical self-esteem and spending a large amount of time alone studying. At age 13, he was accepted into and attended the prestigious Bronx High School of Science.
At age 14, Dr. Kal moved back to Miami, Florida to live with his father. He attended and graduated from Miami Northwestern Senior High School. He excelled academically at Northwestern. However, his low physical self-esteem prevented him from socializing and making many friends.
Dr. Kal then matriculated to the University of Miami and the University of Miami School of Medicine, where after 8 years he graduated with a Bachelors of Science (BS) in Biology and a Medical Degree (MD). While at the University of Miami, Dr. Kal's weight ballooned from 250 pounds to over 330 pounds. This was extremely dangerous because at only 6 feet tall, his weight should have been less than 180 pounds.
Dr. Kal's weight was a concern to him at an early age. During the 12 years of high school, college, and medical school he made many attempts at losing weight. He tried every diet, workout plan, weight loss plan, diet pill, weight loss shake, and magic potion on the market. He was never successful. Instead of losing weight, he gained over 130 pounds during this time. By the time he graduated from medical school, at over 300 pounds, he had given up any hope of ever losing weight.
After medical school, Dr. Kal started his medical internship in Internal medicine at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York. His first rotations were in the Stroke Unit. The majority of the stroke patients had medical conditions that could have been prevented by losing weight and making small lifestyle changes.
Watching his patients suffer from self-imposed diseases that could have been prevented inspired Dr. Kal to change his life. He made a decision to lose weight and improve his health. The only problem was that he was working 80 hours a week, had no money, and owed $200,000 in student loans.
Dr. Kal began to read and study everything available about weight loss. He read all the medical literature, medical journals, books, and success stories available. He used his knowledge of medicine and human biology, years of experience, and the new found information to slowly lose and keep off over 130 pounds without the use of fad diets, weight loss pills, or surgery.
Dr. Kal's transformation was mental as well as physical. After losing the weight, he decided to dedicate his life to helping others lose weight, prevent disease, and live long disease-free lives.
Dr. Kal has since been certified by the American College of Sports Medicine as a Health and Fitness Instructor as well as a Personal Trainer.
Dr. Kal's primary objective is to decrease the number of people who are overweight. He is also extremely passionate about eliminating childhood obesity, which he believes permanently hurts children physically, mentally, and emotionally.
Dr. Kal believes in losing weight slowly without the use of very low calorie diets, fad diets, weight loss pills, or surgery. His strategies include changing behavior, eating a reduced-calorie, well-balanced diet, increasing physical activity, reducing stress, and laughing as much as possible.
Dr. Kal is the owner of One Step Closer Health and Fitness, LLC, a disease prevention and lifestyle change business based in Atlanta, Georgia.
