Doctor Who
David is the Current incarnation of Doctor Who
Doctor Who is a British science fiction television programme produced by the BBC. The programme depicts the adventures of a mysterious alien time-traveller known as "the Doctor" who travels in his space and time-ship, the TARDIS, which normally appears from the exterior to be a blue 1950s police box. With his companions, he explores time and space, solving problems, facing monsters and righting wrongs.
The programme is listed in Guinness World Records as the longest-running science fiction television show in the world and is also a significant part of British popular culture. It has been recognised for its imaginative stories, creative low-budget special effects during its original run, and pioneering use of electronic music (originally produced by the BBC Radiophonic Workshop). In the United Kingdom and elsewhere, the show has become a cult television favourite and has influenced generations of British television professionals, many of whom grew up watching the series. It has received recognition from critics and the public as one of the finest British television programmes, including the BAFTA Award for Best Drama Series in 2006.
The programme originally ran from 1963 to 1989. After an unsuccessful attempt to revive regular production with a backdoor pilot in the form of a 1996 television film, the programme was successfully relaunched in 2005, produced in-house by BBC Wales in Cardiff. The first three seasons of the new series had some development money contributed by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), which was credited as a co-producer. Doctor Who has also spawned spin-offs in multiple media, including the current television programmes Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Adventures, and a single 1981 pilot episode of K-9 and Company.
The show's protagonist, the Doctor, has been played by ten actors over the history of the show so far. The transition from one actor to another is written into the plot of the show as regeneration, and the different parts are often treated as distinct characters to the extent that in some time travel plots they encounter one another and work together. The Doctor is currently portrayed by David Tennant. In the programme's most recent series, which ran from 5 April to 5 July 2008, Catherine Tate played the Doctor's companion, reprising her role of Donna Noble from the 2006 Christmas special. A Christmas special, entitled "The Next Doctor", was broadcast in 2008 and will be followed by four more specials in 2009 and early 2010. The first of these was an Easter special titled "Planet of the Dead", which broadcast in April 2009, and the next one is called "The Waters of Mars"; the next full series, Series 5, has been confirmed to air in 2010. Tennant announced at the 2008 National Television Awards that after appearing in the four 2009?2010 Doctor Who specials, he will leave the role. The Eleventh Doctor will be portrayed by Matt Smith. Smith was 26 years old at the time of his casting, making him the youngest actor to be cast in the role. Karen Gillan, who played a soothsayer in the episode "The Fires of Pompeii", will play the Eleventh Doctor's companion.

Dr Who The early Story
Courtesy of Wikipedia.com
In the beginningThe character of the Doctor was created by the BBC's Head of Drama Sydney Newman, the driving force behind the creation of Doctor Who itself. The first format document for the series that was to become Doctor Who - then provisionally titled The Troubleshooters - was written up in March 1963 by C. E. Webber, a BBC staff writer who had been brought in to help develop the project. Webber's document contained a main character described as "The more mature man, 35-40, with some 'character twist'." However, Newman was not keen on this idea and - along with several other changes to Webber's initial format - created an alternative lead character named "Dr Who": a crotchety older man piloting a stolen time machine, on the run from his own far future world. No written record of Newman's conveyance of these ideas - believed to have taken place in April 1963 - exists, and the character of "Dr Who" first begins appearing in existing documentation from May of that year.[1]
The character was first portrayed by William Hartnell in 1963, who played him as the irascible, grandfatherly figure originally conceived by Newman. When, after three years, Hartnell left the series due to ill health, the role was handed over to respected character actor Patrick Troughton. To date, ten actors have portrayed distinct incarnations of the Doctor on television. (Due to Hartnell's death in 1975, actor Richard Hurndall replaced him as the First Doctor in 1983's The Five Doctors.) Of those, the longest-lasting and perhaps the most recognisable incarnation is the Fourth Doctor, as played by Tom Baker. Currently, the Tenth Doctor is portrayed by David Tennant.
At the series' beginning, nothing at all is known of the Doctor: not even his name (the actual form of which remains a mystery). In the very first serial, An Unearthly Child, two teachers from Coal Hill School in London, Barbara Wright and Ian Chesterton, become intrigued by one of their students, Susan Foreman, who exhibits high intelligence and unusually advanced knowledge. Trailing her to a junkyard at 76 Totter's Lane, they encounter a strange old man and hear Susan's voice coming from inside what appears to be a police box. Pushing their way inside, the two find that the exterior is actually camouflage for the dimensionally transcendental interior of the TARDIS.
Dr Who's history on the BBC
On Saturday 23rd of November 1962 the BBC launched the ongoing Science Fiction Series Dr Who. It was frankly a bit of a shaky start but has now built up to the incredibly high quality series we know and love today.Who can forget The Daleks or the Cybermen ?
Will the Doctor and Martha survive ?
The current series has even more favourites with the return of the Daleks (after we thought they's all died ... and great new characters like the face of Boand Captain Jack .) But more of those later !
There's definitely a slightly Dark Side recently with the Family of Blood and the Gaseous Victorian Ghosts -
Shakespearean Fun was one of my favourites but then I've always thought I should have been an Elizabethan (the first time around !)
I loved the Sliveen (?sp) and the UFO crashing into the Houses of Parliament in London. Aliens do seem to have it in for London though (Maybe that's why the London Police Box seems so apt for the series)
Please look at my Dr Who Diary Blog too - I'm writing down some of his earlier experiences before they fade in the light of day.
