Dragons: A Cross-cultural Icon

Long gone are the days when you would watch a Dragon movie, and see a hokey effect for the Dragon. With today's CGI technology, the image and role of the Dragon in popular movies has begun to explode. The Dragons in the movies look so real and move so life-like, it has added real flavor to the myth of the Dragon. Now, the possibility that Dragons may once have or may still exist seems more acceptable.

If you are like most people and have ever imagined yourself seeing a Dragon, touching a Dragon, or HOLY COW, FLYING a Dragon, then you have probably seen some if not all of the Dragon Movies that will be featured in this lens. DragonHeart, Reign of Fire, Eragon, etc.

DragonHeart is an action/ fantasy movie by director Rob Cohen filmed in 1996. The film stars Dennis Quaid, David Thewlis, Pete Postlethwaite, Dina Meyer, and the voice of Sean Connery as Draco the dragon..

DragonHeart is about a knight, (Bowen), and a Dragon working together to survive. The knight used to slay dragons for a living. Draco is the last dragon alive. So they make a little arrangement. The knight pretends to kill Draco, and Draco pretends to die so they can collect the fee for a dragon slaying. The knight gets to eat, and Draco gets to live. Then of course a damsel in distress gets involved, ( Dina Meyer ). Then or course there's the bad guy who is linked to Draco's beating heart. The boy who would be tyrant, ( David Thewlis ).

DragonHeart is a great movie filled with action, romance, humor, treachery, and a Dragon! Dragonheart was an Academy Award nominee for the for Best Visual Effects as well as various other awards in 1996 and 1997. The film also inspired a direct-to-video sequel, Dragonheart: A New Beginning.

David Thewlis as King Einon, Bowen's former pupil, he was mortally wounded when trying to retrieve his father's crown.
Dina Meyer as Kara, a rebel whose father was a rebel who had his eyes taken out, and was later killed by Einon.
Pete Postlethwaite as Brother Gilbert of Glockenspur, a monk and aspiring poet who is inspired to write of Bowen's deed.
Julie Christie as Queen Aislinn, Einon's mother, who appealed to Draco to save him after he became mortally injured.
Jason Isaacs as Lord Felton, Einon's political adviser, first seen when he refuses to pay Bowen for his work.
Brian Thompson as Brok, Einon's general, who notices the rebels gathering and also Draco.
Wolf Christian as Hewe, a veteran of the rebellion against King Freyne.
Terry O'Neill as Redbeard, the leader of the rebellion against King Freyne.
Lee Oakes as Young Einon.

Reign of Fire is a 2002 action/science fiction film directed by Rob Bowman and starring Matthew McConaughey, Christian Bale, Izabella Scorupco, and Gerard Butler. It takes place in the year 2020 in England, after dragons have reawakened. The film grossed about $82 million[1] on a $60 million budget.

During Underground construction in London around the year 2008, a huge, hibernating dragon is discovered and springs to life, instantly incinerating all construction workers with its fiery breath. The only survivor is 12-year-old Quinn Abercromby, whose mother (Alice Krige) was chief of the construction crew. The dragon escapes, and soon thousands of them work their way across Europe and eventually the rest of the world, burning everything and multiplying at an exponential rate.

Eragon: Latest Movie About Dragons

dragon movieEragon is the first book in the Inheritance Cycle by Christopher Paolini. Paolini began writing the book at the age of fifteen. After writing the first draft for a year, he spent a second year rewriting it and fleshing out the story and characters. Paolini's parents saw the final manuscript and decided to self-publish Eragon. Paolini spent a year traveling around the United States promoting the novel. By chance, the book was discovered by Carl Hiaasen, who got it re-published by Alfred A. Knopf. The re-published version was released on August 26, 2003.
