Dragon Rider by Cornelia Funke - Great Book for Young Readers
Funke's books are filled with magic, wonder and fanciful creatures. Her books include Thief Lord, Dragon Rider, Inkheart and the latest, Inkspell.
Dragon Rider was the first book I read with my son (6 yrs). He loved to listen to the story as it unfolded and always wanted another chapter. The story starts out with a talking rat, a dragon, a brownie and a quest. Along the way they meet up with a young orphan boy, Ben. The quest takes them half way around the world where they meet up with other fantasy creatures and are pursued by a deadly enemy they don't know is there. The friends learn about loyalty, forgiveness and working together.
If you like to dive into the hidden meanings of books, this has second coming, redemption, devil, separation from heaven, hiding in heaven, good triumphs over evil. That is for a much longer essay though.
Cornelia Funke is a great writer of children's fantasy stories. This one has all the excitement of Harry Potter without all the dark, scary parts. If your child isn't quite ready for the world of Harry Potter, this book is a perfect one to share with him.

Dragons
The dragon is a legendary creature of which some interpretation or depiction appears in almost every culture worldwide. The physical description and supposed abilities of the creature vary immensely according to the different cultures in which it appears. However, the unifying feature of almost all interpretations is it being a serpentine or otherwise reptilian monster (or at least possessing a serpentine/reptilian part or trait), and often possessing magical or spiritual qualities.
The two most familiar interpretations of dragons are either European dragons, derived from various European folk traditions, or unrelated Oriental dragons, derived from the Chinese dragon (lóng,?,?). The word "dragon" derives from Greek ?????? (drak?n), "a serpent of huge size, a python, a dragon" and that from ??????? (drakein) aorist infinitive active of the verb ???????? (derkomai) "I see clearly".Drakon, Henry George Liddell, Robert Scott, A Greek-English Lexicon, at Perseushttp://www.yawiktionary.com/d/1148365572775.html
