Preparing for your Alaska Fishing Trip

When fishing in Alaska it is important to dress with the weather in mind. Fail to dress properly and you will find yourself miserable and cold. Here are a few tips to consider when planning or shopping for your Alaska Fishing Trip.

The Wrong Clothes Can Ruin Your Trip

It doesn't matter where you are going, having the wrong clothes can ruin your trip. Especially if your taking your fishing trip to Alaska. The expansive weather in the North is unpredictable and can change at a moments notice. To insure that your trip is exciting and that your not overwhelmed or caught off guard by the weather take these tips into consideration when packing or shopping for your Alaska Fishing Trip.

Layer Your Clothes

Begin by layering your clothes. This is one of the best things you can do. It really doesn't matter what time of the year it is, summer, spring, and winter, take your pick. It can be frigid even in the middle of summer; so layering is advised even in the summer. You want to start your layering with a good foundation. A good foundation to start with is a breathable synthetic. You might think a good cotton fabric would be good but it doesn't breathe as much as the synthetic does. The other advantage it has over cotton is when it gets wet it takes an enormous amount of time to dry. And that is no fun being in wet clothes, in the cold, it can just ruin your day.

Long Sleeve Shirts

Next, on top of your foundational layer, add as some long sleeve shirts, or as many as you think will be needed after hearing the weather report. Fleece is an excellent type of shirt to consider when layering. It can be lightweight, and stop the wind. Usually a little more expensive, but well worth it when heading out in the early morning on your fishing trip and facing those frigid winds on the boat. You will be nice and cozy avoiding the bone chilling wind and cold. Layering is great. The best thing about it is, you can shed off your layers at any time. Weather changes, the temperature warms up, shed some. If it cools back down, just re-apply.

Coats

Coats. An excellent addition to your layers! Remember, check the weather report before you leave, You'll be glad you did, you wouldn't want to head out with a light weighted coat when you should have brought a heaver one, and those Alaska mornings can be quite cold. Also it wouldn't hurt to have something a little resistant to water.

Pants

Pants. The proper pair of pants can be vital for comfort. Jeans are ill advised. The cotton in jeans can be miserable when wet and they hold water and take a long time to dry. Here I would suggest getting pants that are of a synthetic nature or blend. They will help hold in the warmth and can more easily dry out if gotten wet.

Footwear

Footwear. When fishing footwear is just as important as layering. You don't want to wear lightweight tube socks. Here wool is the best choice. Lightweight wool socks are best. Waterproof boots are the best choice as far as shoes go. Sneakers and regular shoes just don't cut it. They aren't waterproof, hold water, and can make the trip miserable. Best get a good pair of waterproof boots. Combined with the wool socks they will keep your feet dry and toasty.

Proper Rain Gear

Lastly, consider brining some proper rain gear. This here is one of the best investments you can make for your Alaska Fishing Trip. No matter what season it is, there will be rain. With the weather so unpredictable this is a must. You can have the best warmest clothes, but with out proper gear you are still all wet and cold. Always bring it. No matter what. The weather can change very fast. The morning can be warm and pleasant, and then by mid-day the heavens have opened, the rain starts, the temperature drops and you'll wish you had it.

Exciting and Comfortable Alaska Fishing Trip

Remember when packing or shopping for your Alaska fishing trip to layer. Dressing in layers will help keep you warm and provides versatility and comfort when the weather changes. Coats provide an added layer of protection from the elements when it rains or the temperature drops. Synthetic pants not jeans provide the best protection. Boots with wool socks help keep the feet dry and warm. Don't forget the rain gear, can't stress that enough, Rain Gear. Taking these precautions will help ensure you have an exciting and comfortable Alaska Fishing Trip, leaving you to concentrate on what is most important, catching all those monster fish!
