Out from under the murky sludge of his past and into the light of the living, the creature crawls. Using the powers of the Ancients, he smites indifference and the wanton abuse of the human nature that drives some to just slide by.

This is Drifter's story...and he's sticking to it.

In A Word: Incredible

A few months back I had a hankering for some Electric Light Orchestra (ELO). I wanted to hear some of their oldest stuff, back before they went pop. To be exact, I wanted to hear their rendition of In The Hall Of The Mountain King, a Norwegian classical piece.

One thing led to another and I found this. I had never heard of Apocalyptica, but I knew by the name they had to be Heavy Metal. When the video first fired up, I thought, "Okay, this is unique. They all dropped their instruments and picked up cellos."

First, I was awestruck, and still get goosebumps when I hear their cover of this.

Second, much to my surprise, I find out that IS their gig. They are a Heavy Metal cello band.

Enjoy this as you read through the lens, or sit back and watch these young men weave magic.

"All Of Our Life Lies In That Dash"

That line has stuck with me from the moment I heard it in the Nick Cage movie Trapped In Paradise. For me, the little morsel of philosophy has deep meaning, but it took better than five years to sink in.

For twenty years my dash was being kept away from me. It was being used, squeezed, and drained by others who thought they knew what was best. But, what they didn't know was that I had so much to offer, if I would be allowed to contribute freely.

All was not bad in those twenty years. I do have two wonderful and inspiring children. Sonya, my oldest, is now married and living in Virginia Beach, Virginia. She is headstrong, confident and beautiful. I am so proud of her. And Alex, well.....he is my personal hero. Alex was born mildly handicapped,(four of six qualifying points for Cerebral Palsy). But, man does that guy have heart. Today, Alex at twenty works full time as a machinist and attends college. In his endeavors and the way he carries himself, he should be a role model for young adults everywhere.

After twenty years I felt as if someone discovered it wasn't my DNA at the crime scene and after consulting The Oracle (my heart), I decided to get back what was truly mine. The process is ongoing and has brought about hardships in areas that are discomforting, such as the heartbreak brought onto my children. But, I feel the continuing healing process there has taken great strides. And, although I am not as well off financially (YET!), I feel so much better about who I am and the ability to contribute on a freewill basis.

Ten years ago I met Deb. She has been incredible. IS incredible. Together we are constantly prodding each other to explore our talents. Supportive, understanding, and growing. We don't compliment each other, we compliment life!

A Story About My Hero And My Philosophy

Alex came home from school one day, he was eight years old, wearing leg braces, and proudly proclaimed that he wanted to play football(the oblong type ;) ) on the Pee-Wee team.

Right away his mother said no. She tried to tell him that he wasn't physically able and that he would get hurt. I grabbed what spine of mine I had at the time and took her to the garage. Firmly, but not loudly or brashly, I explained to her that,"In no way can we or anyone else tell Alex what he is able or not able to do. He must learn what his weaknesses are, otherwise he won't be able to use his strengths to heal his weaknesses."

Surprisingly, I prevailed. Alex played football. The first year, during the long after practice laps, he was always last. The next year, he was never last. The following seasons his position improved until he always finished in the top ten.

He quit football in his sophomore year as part of a group protest against the coach and the coach's practice of nepotism.

It was not his weakness that made him quit. It was a strength. His sense of what was right.

The Dash Reaper

The Dash Reaper is that which which collects lives for its own purposes. In my case, it was my ex-wife, society in general, and my willingness to hand over my dash to be spent in any way she wanted to cash it in.

Since meeting Deb, I have begun to wrest my dash away from the reaper. In spite of two major attempts to repel my efforts, the monstrous grip is loosening. The first attempt was in January of 2008 when Deb lost her job. We could've given in and had her find another job, working for someone else, but we found an opportunity. A chance to control our own destiny. Bikerleather123 was born.

By taking on this new and wonderful challenge, I was prompted to begin my studies in Internet marketing. On my own I set out to learn, while Deb began setting up the store. In six months we had a Google page rank of 2....pretty darn good for someone with no coaching. Traffic is picking up, sales are starting to blossom, and we're having a blast.

We had a target of two years. January 2010 I would be able to quit working outside of the home and focus on the store. I was pushing myself hard. some nights, maybe three hours of sleep, which ain't all that bad since I am an insomniac.

Then the second glancing blow came. Almost a year to the day that Deb was laid off, I got my pink slip. The company was hurting and there was no room on the payroll for my talents...lol.

I welcome this. Sure, money is tight, but I can see progress. With the loving support of Deb and my new found family here at Squidoo, I will be able to make this all work.

Thank You All!

Deb's Lenses

Deb was wanting to begin one of her own. I came home from work one day and she was all agog about research she had done into Bikers and all the charities they promote.

Now she has three.

John Galt

When I ran across this on an Angel's lens I was thrilled. It's not like I've never seen this quote, it's just been a while. I am a huge fan of Ayn Rand's work, and this quote comes from what some refer to as the modern Bible; Atlas Shrugged. Whatever anyone else feels or believes, this is my silent credo.

Man's mind is his basic tool of survival. Life is given to him, survival is not. His body is given to him, its sustenance is not. His mind is given to him, its content is not. To remain alive, he must act, and before he can act he must know the nature and purpose of his action.

Advenvtures In Squidooland!

I joined Squidoo in October 2008, although the Forum thinks I've been a member since New Year's Eve 1969.

Why did I join? To promote our store. My first lens was Biker Leathers Rule! I had a blast building that lens. I was able to write about something that I really enjoy. And here was the bonus; I could use all of my newfound knowledge of SEO. And the icing? Well......I could approach it as I truly wanted....as an art form.

It didn't take long before I was hooked. A large part of the reason I became a squiddict is the community itself. Not only are there a wealth of resources, but the support here is phenomenal.

I know that I don't knock lenses out at the same rate as some of the greatest here, but I will continue to build them because I love every aspect of the process. Someday I will be a Giant and it is my pledge to contribute more on the community side when I do.

How I Build Lenses

First off, there is no building, only creation!

I really can't say where I get the ideas from. They just pop out at me, sometimes bloodying my nose. Could be from a news source or a sudden jolt of synaptic activity. Who knows? I can tell you this, it is awfully hard for me to sit and force myself to think about what's next. So what happens is I collect all kinds of information on all kinds of stuff, hoping to sift it later. But, I love that. I'm a researcher at heart.

When I say create a lens, I mean I create like I'm Viktor Frankenstein, complete with frazzled hair and darkened eyes. I will not stop until I have it right, and then, only then, will I allow Igor to toss the switch to begin the electrifying process of touting. For example, I fretted for days on end over a 295 x 295 pixel piece of landscape. Half the fun is feeling the palms itch and the sweat gather on the brow as the traffic counter ticks.

The tools I use for creation are basically two. The first is Zotero research tool for Firefox. This is one of the best tools in my arsenal, and it's free! I can mange all of my research in a way that goes well beyond bookmarking. The second tool is what I call my lab. Coffeecup HTML Editor allows me to toy with code until I get it where I'm happy.

My favorite module, hands down, is the Text Module. I find it extremely versatile and can carry the full impact of the image or message I want to project. I wield the Text module like Steven King swings foreboding. I mean, if you don't feel that ten pound sledgehammer hit four chapters before it happens, then you aren't reading King.

Angels

One of the coolest things to happen here is to open your e-mail and find out that a lens was visited by an Angel. And if that Angel blesses the lens...oh boy....talk about a perfect summer day with smooth roads under the two wheels for miles and miles. Yeah.

Sure, Angel blessings give your lens an added ummph, but here's the cool part; The Angels know their collective stuff, and the advice they give can help in tremendous ways. They are the ethereal mentors of Squidoo. Take what they say to heart, and remember this, they are volunteers. They want to see you succeed.

If you need an Angel, you can whistle, but I think the quickest way to find one is to go here.

I thank all Angels, past, present, and future for the kind and generous giving of guidance you provide.

Finding What You Need

I am an explorer at heart, so when I started creating lenses I relied on the Squidoo search engine heavily. And soon my bookmarks were over flowing with awesome lenses devoted to everything from HTML/CSS coding, to tips and guides to create the best lenses, and 'how to's' on SEO.

I won't include all of the resources that I have leaned on, but I will point you in the direction of what I think are great places to start.

The quality of resources here are astounding, and that is due solely to the fact that this is a wonderful community.

Don't forget the most important place to start is in your heart!

The Stream That Flows Through All Resources

Squid U! If there is one oasis here at Squidoo, it is the Squid U. The discussion forum can be the most helpful and fun place you'll ever visit here. From critiques to Angel Blessings, A sound-off platform for bragging to technical questions. It's all here.

The Answer Deck is a 'How To' or 'Why Can't I' collection of lenses that will answer just about any question you have about life here in this great sea I call Squidhome.

Where You Should Start (You'll End Up There Sooner Or Later)

This is not, by far, a complete list, but it is a good start. Don't forget the Squidsearch...oh yeah....fun as all get out.

The Builder

The not so evil genius that pulls levers, pushes buttons, and spills who knows what all over the floor (good thing we have a plecostomus to clean up the mess)

Excellent!

Here the band performs a piece by Metallica; One. This is how they made their name. Covering Metallica songs, and let me tell ya....unbelievable.

These guys will convince you that ALL classical music is heavy metal

Community Spirit!

Without any doubt, the best part of this whole life of Squidooing is the community. There is an overtly attempt to make this place in the sun a quality and enjoyable hangout. And let me assure you, this attempt is not in vain.

Why wouldn't it work? I mean, just look in the mirror...you are no doubt a person of not uppity standards, but one who has a sense of quality comradeship. And cooler than that...you want to contribute for the better of not only yourself but those around you. And if you take a look at the lensmasters who are sitting next to you right now, I'm betting you'll smile and say, "Hey! You have the same qualities as I do. I'm glad I know you."

At any rate, that's how I see the mirror and those full of life seats around me.

Those Who Have Touched Me

Well, that list is actually longer than I have years left, and it seems to be growing by leaps and bounds. I will list some of those who have been more than supportive. This list includes those that have given me a hand, those that have pushed me, some who have made me laugh, and those who have ran with me. This list is no way complete....but, it is important to say the least. It will be short, but I will add to it as I swim along here.

Just remember....even if you're not mentioned here, you are no less important to me. Thank You.

Inspirational, supportive, influential, or just down right fun.....call 'em what you will, but I'll call them friends.

Drum Roll Please!

This is the part of the program that really makes this a lensograpghy...well...technically anyhow. These are my creations, and each and every one of them mean something special to me. They are the expressions of my many voices, and sometimes they belong to the voices in my head.

A fair warning to anyone who wants to build a first lens. Get a comfortable chair, because my one lens has turned in to this handful and my butt hurts!

Enjoy!

Biker Leathers

These lenses represent why I came here in the first place, but there's plenty of fun to be had in them; trust me

Music

Like so many other folks, music is special to me, and I plan on exhausting myself on a few more of these

Barnstorming!

This package of lenses were all published at the same time. The hub being The Golden Age Of Barnstorming. Bessie Coleman comes at the skillful hands of Margo Arrowsmith

Great lensography, and very interesting take on your life. Also, wanted to say that your offsite blog Extreme Writing is one of the best looking blogs I've ever seen, extremely impressive. At 55 I've outlived my mother by more than 10%, I've launched my children (well one of them is only mostly launched but that's another story), I have enough money if I live modestly, and I live alone, so there's nobody telling me I can't spend my days exactly as I please. I'm very busy "building content" to add to the universe every day and grateful to be able to do it. Thanks for your inspiration.

Thank you for your sweet comments on the thread in SquidU Alex. I for some reason decided to visit everyone who did or does in a guest book. Being I'm a guest book junkie, its only natural for me...its not natural for me to post in SquidU. ~ I am thankful for Kevin Skinner's win, and I sure am getting blessed with traffic from his fans. Its a good 28,000 in the past two days. The thing is I've run this site from the internet only, because I haven't had TV. I did go buy a DTV converter for my TV so I could watch the final show of AGT and see Kevin win. I figured I could fit it into the budget...lol! Whew! What a ride, because I have approved guest books messages before they went through. ~ I taught my sister Shelly how to do that too and publish just to help me keep up, she did good! Someone should know how to do things and get to PayPal incase something happens to me. She'd give it to my kids without thinking about it!
Adding a link to this to my lensography. ~ God Bless
