Driving Etiquette

Did you ever wonder why some of us do not follow driving etiquette? Driver's family is varied - on the road we face with drivers of different nationalities, education, age.

Can we be not "competitors" , but friends - polite and tolerant to each other on the road?

Here are 10 elementary rules of polite behavior while driving.

1. Drive Responsibly

Always drive responsibly.

Once you start the car, you have to realize that your irresponsible actions put not only you, but also other drivers and pedestrians in great danger.

Speeding and racing in the streets is the main cause of tragical accidents.

Driving a car is not a game, it's very important to ensure that you are driving as safely as possible.

2. Stay Calm - Don't Let Yourself Get Angry

Road is the least place you want to express your anger.

If someone tries to tick you off or involve you in to a race, just let it go. Those people are stupid and irresponsible. Follow the driving etiquette.

If someone bumps into your car, there is no need to get out of the car and start screaming at culprit. Everything can be done in a nice way.

Insurance company will take care of the rest.

3. Give Way With a Smile - Thank When Given

Giving a way is a nice gesture of driving etiquette. Don't try to be first everytime.

Letting a fellow driver to enter the lane first will make him to thank you.

It is surely nice to be thanked.

When you are given a way - always thank.

4. Do Not Use Horn Button or Lights Signal When Unnecessary

Horn sound can be so annoying. Use it only in situations when the other driver doesn't see you.

Do not use your horn button while you're in traffic jam. You can't change a thing, besides making other drivers annoyed!

Do not use light signal too often, because you can dazzle somebody and cause an accident. it`s very unpleasant to get your eyes dazzled!

5. Do Not Place Your Vehicle in Areas Designated for Disabled People

It's a big shame and dishonor to park your car in areas designated for disabled people.

You are healthy enough to park a car a little bit further and taking a stroll backwards.

If you have disability - please get a sign for other people or police to know that you are not breaking the law.

6. Respect Pedestrians

Drivers are not the only party of traffic.

Following the driving etiquette also means that you always have to respect a pedestrian, give him way when needed and he will respect you back.

Pedestrian crossings are places where you should always stop and wait if someone tries to cross the street.

7. Do Not Drive Drunk

Driving drunk is the most dangerous thing ever.

It can not be tolerated as it is the biggest traffic violation.

Do not drive even if you had one or two beers. Let your sober friend drive you.

Many people think that driving a little bit drunk is safe if police does not catch you, well this kind of thinking is wrong.

You put yourself and others at extreme risk. Think twice!

8. While Driving Do Not Talk on the Phone, If Not Using Hands-Free Device

While driving it is very possible that you can get into extreme situations that require great reaction to avoid crashing.

While talking on the phone you only have one hand on steering wheel and also you are distracted, that means your chances of avoiding crash are much smaller.

Sometimes people do not pay attention to the road at all while talking on the phone and are the cause of crash accidents. Be sure to use your hands-free device while driving, respect others!

9. Take a Good Care of Your Car, So It Would be Neat Technically

Driving a badly maintained car is similar to wearing torn and dirty clothes. Respect yourself, your car and other people. Follow the driving etiquette!

Drive your car to car repair occasionally to check if everything is good. It is cheaper to check occasionally then to pay huge amounts to fix your car afterwards...

Wash it, you do not go out dirty, why your car has to?

10. Do Not Pollute Environment

Nature is our mother. So respect everything that surrounds us.

Do not use old, washed-out cars. Save for a new, more eco-friendly.

Drive a car as little as possible. A bicycle is healthy and eco-friendly way to reach your destination.

At last, you can try to drive a car on ecofuel!

This lens should be LotD simply because there are so many drivers on squidoo and there are so many points here that EVERYONE should read and observe. This would not only make road life more pleasant for all concerned but also reduce death and injury. There's something here for each and every reader to take home and take to heart.

Smiling and waving is a good way to thank other drivers, especially nowadays when it is difficult to spot a smiling driver :)) Also a back light blink is a good way to thank a driver, who is behind you. And thanks for the typo :))

How do you suggest we thank other drivers for their politeness? I usually smile and wave.
Also - I think you meant sign when you said sing in the section about disabled parking.
Excellent lens - five stars from me. :)
