I Love My Dutch Oven

Ranked #17,169 in Food & Cooking, #301,857 overall

Yes I love my dutch oven. Say it loud and proud.

I wanted to share with you my love for a dutch oven.  These things are easy to use and a must have for any kitchen. We cook beans, pork chops, chicken, steak and even bread.  That's right I said bread.  Nothing like the smell of hot crusty bread coming out of your oven.  I'm not much of a cook and that's alright.  This baby does most of the work for me.

My Dutch Oven

The lodge logic pre seasoned dutch oven is the one I chose to use. There are a few brands to choose from, but my personal favorite is the Lodge brand. They are made in the USA and the quality is outstanding. The other brands that I have listed are wonderful from what I've read. Be sure to check out the reviews on the different dutch ovens to make sure you have the one that will suit your need.

PS. Before I forget this fact. Dutch ovens can cook deserts!

A Sample Recipe

When we cook with our dutch oven we use it to help tenderize the meat.

This recipe is pretty universal for meats. I have not tried it with fish since I'm not a fish fan.

You'll need:
3 large pork chops with bones or without
2 large onions or 3 medium
Half a pack of your favorite mushrooms. Make sure you clean them gently with a damp cloth before use.
2 large bell peppers.
Wine that you can drink. Aka it has a good flavor and you think it would cook well.
Half a cup of water. You may need more or less.
5 quart dutch oven

Start preheating your oven to 350 degrees.
Make sure your vegetables are sliced.
Mushrooms can be sliced or whole. Sliced tends to work better.
Turn the oven eye on to high.
Put the dutch oven on the eye and lightly cover the bottom with olive oil.
Place the pork chops down into the dutch oven. Be sure that they are flat and are being seared thoroughly. They can lay partially against the sides if you are in need of room.
After they are brown on one side flip them over and repeat. Throw in your vegetables and mushrooms.
When you pour in the wine you just want to put some in for flavor. Don't drown the meat. It's not suppose to boil the food. Then put some water in to make sure that the food is almost covered, but not fully covered. Put the lid on and place the dutch oven in the preheated oven.
Cooking times depend on the meat, but we usually cook ours for 2-3 hours. Checking every hour to ensure that the food does have liquids inside to keep the meat from drying out.
Once you think it's done take the dutch oven out with oven mitts on please!
Use a meat thermometer to ensure that the meat has reached the safety zone and voila you have a meal!
Serve the cooked veggies on top of the meat or on the side. Also some of the cooking liquid can be used to cover the meal.
